Description:
The disruption in education due to the Covid pandemic highlighted the importance of practices in digital education and, in the end, influencing the education policies of many universities. For many university professionals, new theories and pedagogies related to digitalising education have become more actual than ever before. However, for many, there is still relevance in transferring theories into practice and offering their students the best digital educational experience.
This panel proposes a discussion on good practices of integrating digital education in higher education institutions. The speakers are going to showcase various tools, applications, methodologies, research and project results with the purpose to support those attending with the best ideas to take home in their institutions.

Description:
The pandemic caused by COVID19 brought about an acceleration in the already existing transition from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online and distance education. The initial switch to “emergency remote teaching”, in fire-fighting mode, gave way gradually to finer-grained and more sophisticated e-learning scenarios, mixing synchronous and asynchronous practices with multimodal resources. While educationalists have quite rightly been very visible during this period, supporting the different pedagogical aspects, it is without a doubt the underlying technology, robust and scalable, that has made this transition possible. The management of this process has been a challenge to the technologists working in this area. In today’s webinar we will hear from experts in the field of edtech on how they responded to the demands of teaching staff during the pandemic and how they see the online educational future from here outwards.

Over the past year, defined by the COVID 19 pandemic, we have witnessed the boom in the application of digital media to education. This has impacted traditional teaching operations, shifting to online delivery. Whether and how such activities will continue in a post-Covid 19 situation remains unclear. Apart from this are the online and open universities with a long last practice in providing flexible and innovative educational options, widening many learners’ possibilities. In this webinar, our goal is to share the experience gained, good practice, and the pros and cons of handling with 3D technologies, augmented and virtual reality resources to amplify a multimodal, active, and learner-centred method in online higher education during COVID 19 pandemic. As an example of resilience in the educational context, exploring the use made of these digital tools will allow us to understand how the teaching and learning process has been strengthened and interactively expanded.

Join us in this webinar for a unique insiders’ glimpse into a future-focused course developed on the FutureLearn platform called Higher Education 4.0: Certifying your Future. This MOOC was first offered in March 2021 in response to the so-called future skills agenda and the rapid growth of the micro-credentialing movement. It also explores how these change forces align with new models of pedagogy for new times. After a brief tour of the MOOC, the panel will share how the idea for this free online course came about, the learning design process that was adopted in developing the MOOC, and valuable lessons and critical reflections arising from the first offering of the course. The panel discussion will provide an opportunity to talk about what role MOOCs can play, if any, in the effective continuing professional learning and development of higher educators. Webinar participants will be able to view and provide critical and constructive feedback on the second facilitated offering of the MOOC which runs throughout November 2021. This is an opportunity to hear what works and why (and what doesn’t) in the design and delivery of online courses in the wider content of Higher Education 4.0. We look forward to sharing our insights with you.

Description:
In this session we will reflect on the present situation in higher education in post pandemic times by asking several key questions. How well did we cope and what lessons did we learn? How are those lessons reflected in future planning? What now? We plan to discuss how we can take this opportunity and the legacy of a crisis to rethink traditional models of teaching and learning. What should stay and what needs to change? Will higher education ever be the same again? Will we be able to retain the advantages and benefits of gaining more experience in online education, or will we feel compelled to get back to “normal” times? Why did we need a pandemic as the catalyst for the digital transformation of higher education? What is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? Has the future of online education been endangered by emergency remote teaching? What are some of the debates and challenges we need to address in establishing the place of online education in the higher education ecosystem? So, join us in this lively conversation and share your views and reflections.

Life and education in pandemic is going on, after a year now we have gained significant experience, offered numerous researches and analysis, reflected on steps taken. We know what we could have done better, we have ideas on how to do better, how to reset the education for the digital age and now it is time for action. In this new series of EDEN webinar #onlinetogether our aim is to provide insight and advice on how to make those needed changes, to move forward and shape higher education for today and tomorrow. Although we are all looking forward to return to the time before pandemic, we have to be aware that gained experience and knowhow has showed us that technology is the integral part of the education and that with its appropriate and well planned integration we can provide education of higher quality and better designed for the needs of our students. The aim of these webinars is to support the education community worldwide and provide practice-oriented advice combining methodology and technology, examples and resources, to those faced with the challenges of taking present educational practice on a higher level.

Description:
We are facing the biggest disruption of education in history caused by the global health pandemic and it is more important than ever to ensure access to education. As schools closed, over a billion of students have been hampered from learning in the way they used to, and inequalities in access to education have become even more evident. If we take the position that education is common good and should be reachable and available to all, it is our obligation to join efforts and work in this direction. Open Educational Resources (OER) can help in achieving inclusive education aiming to ensure that learners with diverse needs and preferences (such as those with disabilities) have equal opportunities in accessing learning resources, services, and learning experience in general. The Open Education movement is evolving, and besides creating and publishing OERs, focus is shifting to Open Education Practices that can be implemented using OER. It is evident that the Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a paradigm shift in how learners of all ages, worldwide, can access learning. It is, therefore essential, more than ever that the global community come together now to foster universal access to information and knowledge through OER.
In this session, we plan to discuss what actions and approaches could be taken by international associations and communities to contribute to this goal.

Description:
Almost a year after education across the world has faced one of the greatest challenges in history – the impossibility of holding courses traditionally in classrooms, online education and online courses have become the only option for teaching over many months or even semesters.
Many teachers in schools and universities have struggled with the adjustment to working and teaching online, using applications, platforms, and digital tools “overnight” for an indefinite period of educational “social distancing”.
In these conditions of uncertainty and in such a confusing period for many actors in the field of education, free access to knowledge, open education, open educational resources, and especially collaboration between individuals and institutions have become the “engine” of digital integration, and digital transformation, even into the most rigid and traditional education systems in the world.
How has the concept of open education actually contributed to improving the conditions for education during the pandemic?
What projects and approaches have been set in motion by universities, associations at local, national, and European level?
How can we improve collaboration in universities, institutions, and the community to make the education process more efficient even in the most vulnerable demographic areas?

This webinar proposes to present innovative pedagogical trends, of MOOCs created around the topic of digital cultural heritage. The study cases will demonstrate how these courses are created in order to have a better interaction with students remotely in synchronous and asynchronous ways.
As there is a clear gap in creative and cultural industries education related to digital technologies, these good practice examples will help a large variety of people, from teachers who can find creative ways to interact with their students, people involved in the creative industries and students who can find opportunities for learning.
Last year was filled with lockdowns and restrictions, which hit the Creative Industries sector very bad, thus making such courses related to digital culture very useful for those who more and more need to reinvent themselves.

Description:
Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed, with the rationale that, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs, that are designed and developed by a single professor, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived, designed, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries.
The webinar will reflect on this experience, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC, while being less effective from a production point of view. The underlying question of the webinar will be: can a break-even point between international co-production and effectiveness be found within MOOCs?

Description:
As a result of the impact of Covid-19, schools across Europe and the world had to close for long periods. Learning activities had to be conducted remotely. The massive transition of the European school system to online learning was facilitated by the large number of open educational resources available on the internet. OERs and MOOCs could be found in dedicated aggregator portals, institutional repositories curated by universities, foundations and public agencies or through individual recommendations by peers. Teachers were advised to actively search, use and share them.
In the webinar a number of experts, representing the European Commission, Unesco, universities, NGOs and the school system, will discuss how OER use and reuse has expanded during the pandemic and how this has contributed to support the quality of teaching and learning during these challenging times. They will also analyse what is the role of OERs in the ongoing digital transformation of schools.

Description:
The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in many universities and colleges rapidly pivoting to online learning in response to unprecedented times. While 2020 has been described as the year of “the great onlining” of higher education there remains a common perception that online learning is inferior to traditional face-to-face models of education. This debate aims to confront this perception as two teams respond to the moot, “this house believes that online learning is just as good as traditional face-to-face models of education”. The debate is intended to address this serious issue as panel members present and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of online learning in comparison to traditional delivery modes in both a scholarly and entertaining manner. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on our experience of online learning over 2020 and to ponder the future of high education in the post-pandemic digital society.

The presentation will provide some data from the DIGI-HE survey report carried from March to June 2020 (within the framework of the Erasmus+ EUA-led project, DIGI-HE). The European University Association carried out a survey on digitally enhanced learning and teaching among higher education institutions across Europe. Coinciding with the lockdown and physical distancing, the survey results provide some information on the sector’s crisis response, but mainly focussed on the status ante, and on a plan for the future. The online survey was open to universities and other higher education institutions across Europe. About 80% of the participating 368 respondents in 48 European countries are conventional universities offering mainly on-campus tuition, although the majority offered, already before the crisis blended and also some online learning, usually through short courses. This survey is a timely update to EUA’s 2013 survey on e-learning, also as it provides some insights on how institutions responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this session, some of the key findings of this survey will be presented, and discussed with a panel of three university representatives.

Description:
In the last months the world of education has seen its major changes from decades. By remote learning and teaching, moving education from in-campus to online, hybrid education, all educational institutions have relied on educational technologies. The education actively responded to these changes by including more and more open education principles, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational, open source, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations, open source projects, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies, content, and standards in education. They are guided by the 12 principles as listed in the Barcelona Blueprint 2019 and they constantly plan to thrive the learning ecosystems. This workshop intends to discuss its guiding principles but also to present some recent developments with technologies in innovative education. Moodle, MoodleNet, H5P, BigBlueButton and RaspberryPi are among the most used open source solutions, and the future plans for development will be presented. Participants will have the chance to interact directly, ask questions and give feedback to the major ‘brains’ behind them.

In these times of lockdown due to the Coronavirus COVID-19, face-to-face educational functions and activities are being moved online, using remote working sites and tools. Many of us are struggling with the adjustment to working and teaching online, especially those who have always taught in a traditional classroom and are now being asked to rapidly regroup and prepare for a longer period of educational “social distancing”. Where do you begin? How do you manage the process?
To address these questions and many others, EDEN will be rolling out a series of practical webinars on how to take face-to-face education online. These webinars will start by focussing on the day-to-day challenges our teachers and educators face and move on to consider other, broader institutional aspects.

]]>With the success of the previous years’ Open Education Weeks in the background, EDEN once again organised a very successful online series of events this March. The high online attendance and exceptional webinar sessions were truly inspiring to experience.
EDEN is honoured to announce that this year 6 high quality webinars took place with distinguished speakers and 1086 registered participants. The participants came from 50 different countries including 22 countries from outside Europe, from United States to China, from Brazil to India, demonstrating a wide geographical coverage and a substantial outreach.
Altogether 32 facilitators contributed to the successful implementation of the ambitious programme. EDEN would like to thank the valuable contribution of the facilitators and trusts that the initiative contributed to the European dialogue about the state and the future of Open Education.
All participants and facilitators received EDEN open badges for their contribution. Presenters’ slides can be viewed on EDEN’s SlideShare page. The recordings of the webinars can be viewed below.
EDEN is looking forward to your participation at our upcoming webinars.
During the Open Education Week, EDEN offered the following online events:

Moderator: Sandra Kučina Softić, EDEN President, SRCE
Description:
Aim of this webinar is to show examples of good practice of use of Open Education Resources (OER) in teaching and learning. Open Education Resources and Open Education Movement are high on the agenda in EU but also worldwide, yet teachers and educators are struggling when talking about OER, how to use them or to make their own materials open. Another issue is how to integrate OER in teaching in the learning process. Open pedagogy is a set of teaching and learning practices only possible or practical when using OER. Open education practice encompasses teaching techniques and academic practices that draw on open technologies, pedagogical approaches and open educational resources to facilitate collaborative and flexible learning. Join us and get ideas on how you can implement OER in your teaching and learning.

Description:
For flexible, open and online education to become reality, it is vital to increase trust in recognition and credentials through robust and reliable solutions. In Europe, we already have standards and tools that can be used to transparently describe qualifications. The European Qualifications Framework gives an indication of the level of various qualifications; the European Diploma Supplement provides a standardised template to give additional information about a degree; the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows for individual learning units to be described in terms of knowledge, skills, responsibility and autonomy; the European Skill, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) database provides a standard terminology. However, while theoretically these same tools could be used to describe virtual mobility and open education, there is a long way to go until open education modules are treated the same way as their traditional counterparts.
This webinar will provide a deeper analysis of this challenge and introduce a few European initiatives, such as the new Europass, MicroHE, ECCOE and more, that aim to facilitate the recognition of open, online and flexible higher education and increase trust in technology-enabled credentials among students, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers.

Description:
The world is changing towards a more inclusive and interconnected global marketplace, where technology is playing an intensive role. Education actively responds to these changes by including more and more open education principles, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. Those institutions that enhance their traditional teaching environments with best digital educational technologies will give their students, in turn, the best chances to succeed. Students who have access to digital learning environments at their educational institutions will have increased skills and knowledge to achieve and they will become Open lifelong learning students. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational, open source, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations, open source projects, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies, content, and standards in education. The first meeting was at the Open Edtech Conference in Barcelona, November 21-22, 2019, where the Barcelona Blueprint was initiated. This webinar intends to discuss its guiding principles but also to present some recent

Description:
Open education has a key role to play in potentiating social inclusion. As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, respect for human rights, the rights of minorities. However, as also noted, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion, namely: populism, xenophobia, divisive nationalism, discrimination, misinformation, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism).
In order to counter these problems, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need, therefore, to teach and support students, especially the younger generations, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In this webinar different aspects and examples of the role of open educational resources and practices for citizenship education will be considered and how they can be potentiated in the future.

Description:
The textbook is an enduring staple of higher education, occupying a key role in formal educational settings. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large, often expensive, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? To help “unbox” the book, this panel seeks to explore students’ use (and non-use) of textbooks for learning in higher education; what alternatives might exist; and to try and envisage textbooks and educational resources in a more open future.

Description:
With the rise of technology, combined with the explosive growth of social media over the last decade, the concept of personalized mobile learning through bite-sized learning snippets has come to the fore. In addition, in the context of major global challenges such as globalization, digitalization and demographic change, and learning for all, there is an urgent need for a variety of learning opportunities and pathways for lifelong and life-wide learning. The concept of microlearning has been around since about 2000, but what is it and how to make learning in bite-sized form successful, attractive and effective, as it to be just right for me and learning in education, training, achievement and talent development contexts. Micro-learning offers opportunities to incorporate, integrate and personalize cost-effective and meaningful learning and training solutions for each individual in terms of personal, environmental and organizational performance improvement. During this webinar with invited experts in this field there will be opportunities to learn more about the growing field of micro-learning / bite-sized learning snippets and quality for life-ong learning.
