The “From visitors to virtual audiences: digital engagement and learning in museums” webinar took place on Wednesday, 17 April 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Chiara Zuanni from the University of Graz, Austria in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room.

This webinar focused on the development of digital tools and practices to enhance learning in museums and in the heritage sector. Departing from how the digital transformation has affected visitor experiences in the galleries, the webinar then focused on online engagement, through websites and social media communication.

The webinar discussed how different forms and approaches to digital media can serve educational and engagement purposes, supporting different groups of visitors and stakeholders. By focusing on selected social media examples, the webinar also highlighted how these initiatives can be effectively evaluated and researched to understand the public construction of knowledge in museums.


Chiara Zuanni is a tenure-track assistant professor in Digital Humanities at the Centre for Information Modelling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Graz. Her research focuses on the construction and mediation of knowledge in museums, the impact of digital media on the heritage sector and its audiences, digital data practices in museums. She has a degree in Classics and a MA in Archaeology from the University of Bologna, and a PhD in Museology from the University of Manchester (2016); she has held postdoctoral position at the University of Liverpool and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is a member of the Institute in Ancient Itineraries (2018-2019, Getty Foundation, KCL and Umeå University) and the Erasmus+ project ‘DigiCulture’ (2018-2021, coordinated by the University of Timisoara).
