SUMMARY:No. 4 - Do we develop digital competences or digital skills? – DigCompEdu to balance your way through the storm
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nWhen all education organizations moved online in Spring\, 2020\, many of them had no time at all to think about consistent development of digital competences and existing frameworks\, but took rapid actions to find most suitable technological solutions to ensure teaching and learning and filled in the skill – gaps of their educators to apply technologies to transfer information in the smooth and inclusive way.However\, by the pandemic year\, several important instruments describing digital competences of educators already exited\, namely\, competence metaframeworks\, covering knowledge\, skill and attitude/ responsibility level\, as well as digital competence framework for educators – DigCompEdu – and many others. When the storm surpassed\, we have to look around us to reflect on our practices and the way how digital competence development is addressed in education organizations and how this is in line with the competence definition in the broad sense.Moreover\, several important initiatives in the European projects among academics and professionals prepared suggestions on how to address DigCompEdu competence groups and how to match DigCompEdu framework with the competence maturity model. Others raised important questions if digital competence framework is important for educators only\, and how student digital competences are to be considered in this perspective. The webinar dedicated to address these issues will address the challenges and needs that education institutions experience in digital competence development\, will look at the proposal of new meta competences as suggestions for DigCompEdu\, the maturity model proposal\, and will discuss how the pandemic highlighted the need for development of digital competences. \n  \nModerator\nAirina VolungevičienėEDEN Digital Learning Europe\,Vytautas Magnus University \nProf. dr. SUMMARY:No. 3 - Teaching After the Storm: Reimagining the Traditional Lecture
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER ADD TO CALENDAR \nDescription\n\nIn this webinar\, we explore the question is the lecture dead? Will the traditional lecture format be a casualty of efforts to build back better? One of the biggest challenges facing educators when quickly moving to emergency remote online teaching was how to teach large classes effectively. At the beginning of the COVID crisis\, many people merely replaced their traditional face-to-face lecture with a live synchronously delivered session through Zoom\, Teams\, Collaborate\, or other online platforms. It soon became apparent that lecturing down a digital pipe to a large group of students passively watching from their screen-tops was not the most engaging form of online learning. While this approach was understandable during the height of a crisis\, students’ feedback and a commitment to providing quality higher education challenge us to do better. The pandemic experience raises longer-term questions about the value of the traditional lecture method—irrespective of the delivery mode. A diverse and experienced group of international educators reflect in this panel discussion on the challenge of teaching large classes both during and beyond the pandemic. Post-pandemic\, what is the future of the lecture? Is there still a place for the lecture? Is the traditional lecture antithetical to promoting active and meaningful learning that develops more creative\, innovative and imaginative learners? Beyond the storm\, how do we avoid the danger of grafting old 19th Century teaching methods onto new 21st Century digital technologies? If the lecture still has a place in the new digital learning classroom\, what should it look like? How might we develop a hybrid model of the lecture that harnesses the best of older pedagogies with new digital technologies to enhance the student experience when teaching large classes? As part of this lively roundtable discussion\, the panel will consider these questions\, and more\, as well as those posed by participants as we defend\, challenge and reimagine the lecture. \nModerator\nMark BrownEDEN Treasurer@mbrownz \n\nMark Brown is Ireland’s first Chair of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University. SUMMARY:No. 2 - Sharing and collaborating our way out of the storm
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDescription\n\nDuring the last year\, with education restrictions due to the global pandemic\, when educational organizations across the globe were forced to move online under demanding timelines and with budget constraints\, many educators have relied on open educational resources OERs to fill a critical need. Open education and OERs have been used for two decades at different education levels\, not always gaining full traction in schools or higher education. In this webinar\, we will identify whether OERs were a solution or being used in the last year in education; and how OERs may be used in the future. In our quest for shaping the future of higher education\, do we consider open education a solution and OERs and practices as part of the education ecosystem?  What problems might OERs help educators resolve and how we can harness the value of OERs for higher education?  Can we consider the future of education is open and\, if yes\, what strategies can we use to make this happen? Three dynamic and insightful speakers with extended experiences and whose voices are valued and command attention in the education community\, will try to inspire us for how to share and collaborate our way through the storm that has encapsulated higher education. \nModerator\nDiana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\,Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \n\nDr. Diana Andone is the Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, responsible for planning and implementing digital education\, and the university award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT. SUMMARY:No. 1 - Learning Design in the Eye of the Storm
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDescription\n\nIndeed\, today most teachers and educators work in an online learning environment\, yet for many of them their immersion in online teaching was a necessary response to the global pandemic. Overnight we changed physical\, traditional\, learning environment to an online environment. This brought many challenges for teachers. A high number of them needed different and new skills and experiences in teaching as well as the support and collaboration with people of different backgrounds and expertise. Support units\, learning technologists and instructional and learners designers now become more than ever in focus by extensively helping teachers to navigate this new environment and select appropriate tools for planned activities\, to implement new pedagogies\, and to design efficient\, effective and enjoyable learning experience for their students.  Learning designers across the globe led teachers out of the storm.  The pandemic forced steps forward and an online pivot that were planned and foreseen for many years and prompted teachers everywhere into action by opening new opportunities for teaching and learning and highlighting the critical importance of learning design. In addition\, it has moved the focus from content creation to the users learning experience supported by appropriate learning environments. How teachers navigated these pedagogical changes\, what kind of challenges they experienced and what kind of support they required with designing their courses is the topic of this session. \nDuring the session\, we will also discuss the questions: \n\nWhat is learning design in 2021 and post-pandemic?\nHow does learning design differ from instructional design?\nWhat is next for the learning designer?\nWhat is the future of the learning designer’s role?\nWhere does the learner designer fit in the new digital learning ecology?\nWhat barriers do learning designers face?\nHow can reflective learning design improve student experience?\n\nModerator\nDr. Sandra Kučina SoftićEDEN President\, University Computing Centre \n\nSandra Kučina Softić is EDEN president and Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the University of Zagreb University Computer Centre (SRCE). SUMMARY:No. 5 - Why research is important for enhancing the human experience of learning with technology: Taking a peek into the EDEN Research Workshop program
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.  \nDescription\nThis year’s EDEN Research Workshop was planned to be hosted by the prominent Universidade Aberta the Portuguese Open University\, in the beautiful city of Lisbon. Faced with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic\, EDEN is organising this workshop fully online\, taking the full advantage of the virtual environment with an exciting and extensive three-day programme. As with past research workshops\, the event will promote intensive collaboration and networking opportunities amongst participants including parallel ‘research-speed-dating’ paper sessions\, workshops and dynamic poster sessions. With a high quality programme and close to 90 submissions already\, this is the event for you to attend\, especially if you are a researcher or post graduate student.By upscaling and accelerating the adoption of distance and online education across the world\, the disruptive impact of the Coronavirus Sars CoV-2 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of rethinking the educational process as an integral part of the authentic digital life experience of its main actors. In this massive collective experience of change\, the role of educational institutions\, teachers\, learners\, and of their families and communities is rapidly transforming. As a result\, new challenges for researchers have emerged that need to be addressed: How do we assure truly equitable and socially fair access to digital learning opportunities? How can we conduct effective online learning with non-adult populations? How can we improve teachers’ and learners’ digital competences for teaching and learning? How may AI and machine learning contribute to enhancing the education process and making it more flexible and personal? How can we conduct more authentic and reliable digital assessment? What are the new challenges for research into digital\, open\, distance and networked education? In this round table\, we will provide you with a closer look into the rich and interesting programme of the EDEN Research Workshop and hold an open discussion on the challenging topics facing researchers and teachers today. \n\nModerators\nAlan TaitFormer EDEN PresidentProfessor Emeritus of Distance Education and Development\, Open University\, UKAlan Tait is an EDEN Senior Fellow. SUMMARY:No. 4 – How to build communities of support for teachers?
DESCRIPTION: WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.  \nDescription\nIn the “new normal” that the ongoing pandemic is forcing us to assume\, a lot of attention has been given to the way in which students have to adapt to online or blended learning and how they can be supported. This has not necessarily been the case for teachers. The response to this situation by educational institutions has been varied\, and while most now provide the necessary tools for their teaching staff to use\, relevant training and support has often lagged behind. Although teachers are accepted experts in their fields\, that does not equip them with the knowledge or skills required to carry out their teaching activities online in an effective way. The speakers today will consider the issues related to providing support for teachers and the role communities can have in that process. In a similar way to previous webinars\, our speakers will share their expert advice and practical tips\, responding to a variety of questions such as: \n\nWhat kind of support can most benefit teachers during the ongoing pandemic?\nWhat is the value of communities of support for teachers?\nHow can teachers share their concerns and benefit from the experiences of other teachers in similar disciplines?\nIs it reasonable to expect face-to-face teachers to adapt easily to online learning. How might that adaptation process go?\nHow can we ensure students feel welcome in online spaces?\nHow is intentionally equitable hospitality an important part of building a community online?\nHow do we incorporate pedagogies of care into online community building?\n\n\nModerator\nVlad MihăescuEDEN NAP SC ChairFaculty of Electronics\, Telecommunications and Information Technology\, Politehnica University of Timisoara \nVlad Mihaescu has a PhD in educational and technological models of MOOCs and has more than 10 years’ experience as a trainer and teacher in areas like multimedia technologies\, social media\, e-tourism\, e-learning\, usability\, entrepreneurship\, programming\, soft skills and leadership. SUMMARY:No. 3 – Moving to the next phase of online: How can we improve on what we’ve done so far?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nAs we enter into the fall and winter semesters\, it’s still not clear how long the pandemic will be with us. We’ve made it through the remote emergency teaching phase of the first months of Covid-19\, and our focus is now shifting to how we can improve on what has already been done — and on making it sustainable over the long-term. A variety of areas for improvement come to mind. Perhaps you see a need to redesign and refine your current online curriculum. Maybe you want to explore new forms of delivery to support communication and dialogue. Or maybe you want to concentrate on streamlining your work-at-home processes. This session will provide you with guidance for moving forward and for improving on your current online courses. During the webinar\, our speakers will share their expert advice and practical tips\, responding to a variety of questions such as: \n\nHow can universities build on the resources and social capital created in terms of faculty development during the Covid-19 initial response phase?\nWhat is next for faculty support structures?\nWhat can institutions and departments do now to improve their “emergency” remote learning curriculum with open resources?\nHow can institutions or departments motivate and continue to train faculty in remote/blended learning instruction?\nGiven that many of us are working off-campus\, how can I prevent the feeling of isolation for myself as well as my online students but also make sure I am fully engaged with the critical inner-workings of my university?\nIn working remotely\, what are some strategies for maintaining a high level of productivity as well as a healthy work/life balance?\n\n  \n\nModerator\nLisa Marie BlaschkeSenior Fellow and Chair of the Board of EDEN Council of FellowsProgramme Director\, Center of Lifelong Learning (C3L)\, Oldenburg\, Germany \n \nLisa Marie Blaschke is a former executive committee member of the European Distance Education and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and is a Senior EDEN Fellow and Chair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council. SUMMARY:No. 2 – Online transformation of universities – having faced the challenges of the pandemic\, are they prepared for the new normal? 2nd part
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nAs a result of the COVID-19 pandemic last March\, universities worldwide faced the need to move all their classes to an online environment overnight\, in order to ensure continuation of their teaching and learning activities. Institutions that had already ventured onto the path of online education realised this transformation much more quickly than those who were less prepared. Others made the transition more modestly\, only beginning to take the first steps into online education. In a remarkable short time\, courses and exams across the globe moved online\, ensuring that universities did not close but rather adapted to the new situation and by doing so managed to save the remainder of the academic year.Having overcome the initial impact of the pandemic and having moved beyond immediate crisis management\, university leaders are now taking the time to reflect on the lessons learned\, to set new strategies for the future\, and to fully prepare their institutions for the new academic year. Although some continue to hope that students will soon return to classrooms\, others see the COVID-19 crisis as a catalyst for educational organisations to implement online teaching and learning systematically and to thus offer a better quality of education in this age of the new normal. What are the key leadership decisions that organisational leaders must make in creating their vision for the future? What short-term and long-term strategies are needed? How can leadership ensure a smooth transition to the online setting and create the necessary infrastructure for training teachers\, and implementing new teaching methods and redesigned curricula? How can universities manage their transition to online while improving the quality of teaching and learning? These are some of the questions we will be addressing in the first two webinars of the EDEN webinar initiative Education in time of a new normal (September 14 and 21).Aimed at policy makers and organisational leaders and management\, but also for all those working in education\, these webinars will provide practical insights and tips from well-known experts\, leaders\, and practitioners in the field of e-learning and online learning.Join the sessions and participate in discussions\, where you will get the ideas you need to turn your vision for the future into actionable steps. Get the answers you need for smoothly leading your organisation in transforming your curriculum to online and ensuring high quality teaching and learning.Questions that will be discussed in this webinar: \n\nHow are academics and professional staff experiencing the rapid transfer to working from home and moving to online teaching and research?\nWhat groups are disadvantaged by working from home?\nHow can universities reduce structural inequalities?\nAre universities more likely to transform\, or mitigate in response to emergency conditions?\nIs the recent Covid19 experience enough for universities to consider real transformation?\nIn order to strengthen resilience\, should a university rely on a strategy of diversifying and broadening its range of courses or specializing its study program and strengthening cooperation with other universities?\nWhat structural\, programmatic\, professional and technological balance should a faculty strive for in order to be able to react successfully to changes and compensate for serious disturbances in its development?\n\n\nModerator\nAntonio TeixeiraFormer EDEN presidentUniversidade Aberta\, Portugal \n \nAntónio Teixeira is an Associate Professor of open\, distance and network education at Universidade Aberta (UAb). Information and communication technologies affect all aspects of society\, as well as learning\, teaching and research\, offering the potential for innovation and for better and greater development of the skills needed for the labour market. In today’s education system\, we have students who were born in the 21st century and with unlimited access to information\, who use digital technologies on a daily basis\, and who no longer want to passively listen and memorize information served. They expect to leave the education system with the knowledge and skills that they need to be employable in the labour market\, to have the capability to be lifelong learners and to actively participate in and contribute to society. Faced with an overnight change in how education is delivered\, students and teachers have had to adapt to a new situation\, learning new technologies\, ways of teaching and learning\, time management\, communication\, and collaboration. In this session\, we will introduce you to the topic of future skills and engage you in a discussion on the skills needed to be active learners and participants in today’s society. In addition to providing examples of how teachers from a number of international educational contexts have developed online teaching methods to overcome the challenges of the current lockdown conditions\, our panelists will also provide insights into the following questions: \n\nWhat is meant by 21st century learning skills and how do these connect to the global issues facing the 21st Century?\nTo what extent are these 21st skills new or different from skills that have been required to live and work in early centuries (for example\, in the 20th century)?\nHow can we overcome the challenges of helping students develop 21st Century skills within the context of remote and ‘socially-distant teaching’?\n\n\nModerator\nSandra Kučina SoftićEDEN PresidentUniversity Computing Centre SRCE\, Croatia \n \nSandra Kučina Softić is the Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the Zagreb University Computing Centre (Croatia). SUMMARY:No. 10 - How do we plan for education after the pandemic?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \n\nIn these uncertain times due to the Coronavirus COVID-19\, many of us are struggling with the adjustment to working and teaching online. Where do you begin? How do you manage the process? To address these questions and many others\, EDEN is organising a series of practical webinars entitled “EDEN webinar series: Education in time of a pandemic #onlinetogether #covid19”. These webinars are featuring experts and experienced practitioners within the field of open\, distance\, and e-learning.The weekly\, one-hour sessions are held every Monday at 17:00 CEST\, from March through June\, 2020. \n  \nREAD MORE \n\nDescription\nThe EDEN “#onlinetogether – Education in time of a pandemic”. webinars will be twinned on 2 June with the similar campaign of ICDE”#learningtogether” For this online event the topic: How to anticipate the global future educational landscape after the pandemic was choosen. UNESCO reported in May that about 75% of pupils and students cannot attend F2F classes. Fully online education on a global scale is unprecedented in history. Today we are talking about the “new normal” and “future normal”. What it is going to look alike?  In this panel\, distinguished speakers will reflect on and share their insights into the present situation in education. We will also try to provide answers to following questions: \n\nHow do you see this situation where all education has moved online? Can online and distance learning replace F2F learning? Some of the campus-based universities have already decided to start this autumn with online classes.\nHow can HEI’s and/or governments address issues of inclusivity\, when both students and staff throughout the world don’t have access to reliable internet or electricity?\nCritics have called online education to be “elitist\,” how are we able to combat that stereotype and truly make remote education affordable and accessible for all?\nWhat is the role of associations such as EDEN and ICDE in this process and how can they contribute to education\, especially in these times?\nWhat steps do institutions have to take to fully embrace the digital transformation and provide education accessible to students?\nIt is unlikely that we will be able to return to the situation we had before the pandemic\, so how do you foresee the future of education?\nSome teachers see online teaching as a temporary measure to be adopted until we return to the previous normal. Is this the case?\nAre public campus universities endangered by distance-teaching ones\, MOOCs and other online programmes?\nWhat about universities that did not previously use any form of e-learning system? What kind of challenges do they face?\nHow can F2F HEI teachers be provided with proper training in the digital skills they need for online teaching and learning?\nStudents and teachers value human contact\, how can this be guaranteed in virtual environments?\n\n\nModerator\nMark BrownEDEN TreasurerProfessor and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning at Dublin City University\, Chair of the ICDE World Conference on Online Learning (Dublin) \nMark is Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). For those already using digital technologies and running blended courses\, it was not such a demanding task\, but for those who teach predominantly in the classroom environment\, it have been quite a sudden an often overwhelming challenge. When now engaging in online learning\, a number of teachers are making first steps looking into how and where to start\, how online teaching should look like\, how to engage with students…others have had to adapt their blended way of working to the fully online mode. Online learning has brought new challenges to students\, too: although they use digital technologies in their everyday life\, online learning is new to them as well\, deprived from the physical presence of the classroom some of them feel isolated and unsecure and feel a lack support. In this webinar\, we will provide practical tips that can help teachers in designing\, structuring and delivering their online courses. We will do so by trying to give you answers to the following questions: \n  \n\nHow to transfer f2f courses to online environments?\nWhat are the necessary elements of an online course?\nIs there a difference between learning outcomes (LO) in f2f and online and how to assess LO in the online environment?\nHow to organize students’ activities to be in correlation with LO and ECTS points of the course?\nHow to make sure that an online course is not just a repository of learning materials?\nHow to ensure effective communication with students in the online environment? What should be the ratio between synchronous and asynchronous communication?\nWhat kind of audio and video resources can be used\, and how many of them to add to the course?\n\nModerator\nFabio NascimbeniHead of Learning Design\, Open University UK \nFabio Nascimbeni works as Assistant Professor on eLearning Innovation at the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR)\, where holds the Telefonica Chair on Digital Society and Education. How can you help your students manage it? How can you manage it yourself? The term infodemic has been coined to outline the perils of misinformation phenomena during the management of virus outbreaks\, since it could even speed up the epidemic process by influencing and fragmenting social response (World Health Organization\, 2019; Cinelli et.\, al 2020).How has been infodemic studied so far? How can we assess learners’ digital literacy and critical thinking abilities in collaborative virtual environment (CVEs)? Starting from these questions\, the present webinar will be structured in three parts: \n\nThe concept of infodemic will be presented to see how it is possible to monitor the spreading of misleading unreliable information\, by combining Big Data and Natural Language Processing techniques (Cinelli et al.\, 2020)\nThe potential role of Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy as “antibody” for the infodemic will be discussed (Katz\, 2007)\nFinally\, a Survey session will be carried out. Data collected will be employed to develop new evidences for the automatic assessment of online learners’ Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy (Poce et al.\, 2019).\n\nQuestions to be covered over the session\n\nWhich kind of resources we can suggest to our students to manage the current infodemic?\nHow can we protect ourselves from misleading information during an infodemic?\nHow can we support the development of Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy in students?\nHow can we assess students’ Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy?\nHow can e-learning strategies be used to develop and assess students Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy?\n\nReferences\n\nCinelli\, M.\, Quattrociocchi\, W.\, Galeazzi\, A.\, Valensise\, C. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in order to contain the spread of the COVID -19 pandemic. UNESCO estimates that more than 850 million children and young people – about 80% of the global student population – have had to stay away from schools and universities due to pandemic COVID 19. Nationwide closures are in effect in some 110 countries and local closures in many others. This means more than doubling the number of students prevented from attending educational institutions\, and a further increase is expected during this Covid 19 pandemic. From one day to the next\, teachers around the world have found themselves managing virtual classrooms\, communicating with their students over social media platforms and learning by doing as they provide education from a distance to over 1.5 billion students affected by school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So when education moves home\, what are the implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders \nSome questions that will be discussed \nDuring the webinar\, the questions of why\, what\, who\, how\, and when will be discussed when education moves home\, and what the implications are for students\, academics\, administrators and education managers. \n\nThe differences between emergency distance learning and online learning will be discussed.\nHow can high-quality education be facilitated\, promoted and offered despite many challenges?\nHow can academics and learners be protected\, supported and recognized?\nWhat kind of lessons will we learn from Covid19 and what challenges do we face?\nOne obvious problem is that the “educational business” will not be the same as it is today.\n\n  \nWhen education moves home: implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders\nMonday\, 6 April\, 2020\, 17:00 CET \nModerator\n Diana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\, PUT https://elearning.upt.ro/diana-andone/Dr. Andone runs the team who developed the university’s award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT and is also a professor at the Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, in the area of multimedia and web technologies.
