These opportunities\, however\, raise tensions around academic control\, coherence and equity. This presentation applies gatekeeping theory to examine how GenAI shapes the selection\, structuring and delivery of knowledge in education\, drawing comparisons with the shift from human to algorithmic gatekeepers in media. The analysis combines literature\, institutional AI policies and illustrative cases to address three questions: how GenAI influences access to knowledge; what risks personalisation poses for academic consistency; and in what ways GenAI functions as a gatekeeper in learning environments. Examples considered include AI tutoring systems\, Q&A chatbots\, adaptive learning platforms and automated assessment.Key challenges include content control\, bias\, dependence on proprietary systems and the trade-off between personalisation and standardisation. To address these\, the presentation proposes practical measures: educator review of AI outputs\, transparent governance mechanisms (such as bias audits)\, AI literacy for staff and students\, and investment in open\, modifiable infrastructures. The overall argument is that innovation must be balanced with educational integrity. Effective oversight and active academic involvement are essential to ensure that GenAI supports\, rather than displaces\, the values and diversity of higher education.Moderator:   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Dr Fiona Aiken\, School of Environment\, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences\, Open University\, UK\, EDEN NAP Steering Committee ChairFiona Aiken is a Senior Lecturer\, Staff tutor in the STEM faculty\, School of Environment\, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences with the Open University\, UK. Generative AI holds the potential to complement and extend human expertise\, helping educators and trainers engage with AI in responsible\, ethical\, and educationally meaningful ways. As innovation accelerates\, it becomes vital to keep human judgment\, pedagogical purpose\, and professional values at the center. AI should strengthen—not disrupt—the foundations of instruction and learning. To achieve this\, educators and trainers need practical methods to evaluate their real impact on instruction and learning. This 60-minute online and open workshop aims to equip participants with both conceptual insights and practical experience in designing and evaluating Human–AI partnerships to advance instruction and learning. The interactive session will focus on two key aspects:– Designing effective Human–AI instruction practices – Exploring practical examples of effective educators–AI collaboration and strategies to create engaging and sustainable AI training for educators.– Evaluating the impact of AI-enhanced training – Discovering methods to assess whether these practices and programs truly promote change in educators’ knowledge\, motivation\, and instructional behavior.Participants will not just share ideas but also experiment with structured AI-supported practices\, apply evaluation frameworks\, and discuss real-world examples of AI integration in education. It will bring together insights from two European projects\, AI-EmpaTe and EffecTive:– AI-EmpaTe focuses on practical AI training for educators\, offering ready-made Human–AI partnership practices that strengthen educators’ agency\, creativity\, and decision-making. https://www.aiempate.com/– EffecTive specializes in evaluating the outcomes of professional development programs\, providing frameworks to assess how AI-focused training influences educators’ practice and promotes meaningful\, long-term change. https://project-effective.eu/By combining AI-EmpaTe’s practical orientation with EffecTive’s evidence-based evaluation models\, this workshop provides a rich\, hands-on experience that supports both the design and assessment of AI-enhanced practices.Key Takeaways:– Concrete examples of meaningful Human–AI partnerships in instruction and learning.– Practical tools and methods to design and evaluate AI-enhanced practices that align with educators’ pedagogical and ethical values.– Hands-on experience that demonstrates how AI can support—rather than substitute—the educator’s professional judgment\, enabling participants to develop their own Human–AI practices with confidence and purpose.Participant Interactivity:This session is designed to be highly interactive\, combining collaborative discussions with guided hands-on exploration. Participants will actively engage in:– Hands-on exercises – Experimenting with ready-made AI-supported instruction practices and unpacking the design principles behind them\, so participants can later adapt and create their own Human–AI practices.– Small-group discussions – Analyzing real examples from the AI-EmpaTe and EffecTive projects to identify what makes Human–AI collaboration effective\, and how these insights can inform participants’ own instruction or training contexts.– Collaborative reflection – Synthesizing insights\, sharing lessons learned\, and translating them into actionable strategies for developing and evaluating Human–AI partnerships in participants’ everyday practice. The online workshop offers an interactive space where educators collaborate\, experiment\, and reflect—leaving with concrete strategies to design and evaluate Human–AI practices that bring real added value to instruction\, learning\, and professional growth.Moderator: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuy Cohen\, School of Education\, Department of Education in Mathematics\, Science\, and Technology\, Tel Aviv University\, IsraelGuy Cohen is a Phd Student Researcher at the School of Education\, Department of Education in Mathematics\, Science\, and Technology\, Tel Aviv University. SUMMARY:Il ruolo delle tecnologie per una scuola inclusiva e partecipativa The role of technology for inclusive and participative schools
DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR JOIN WITH ZOOMLanguage: Italian\nNell’ambito del seminario\, dopo aver concettualizzato il tema dell’inclusione scolastica secondo la prospettiva del modello bio–psico–sociale dell’ICF (International Classification of Functioning) (OMS\, 2002))\, si farà riferimento ad alcune criticità emerse nel contesto nazionale relativamente al fenomeno del “push and pull out” (Ianes e Demo\, 2015)\, evidenziando come sono sempre più frequenti forme diversificate di micro–esclusione degli studenti con disabilità nel contesto scolastico. SUMMARY:Listening to student voices on cultural diversity: a strategy to promote interculturalism in schools
DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR JOIN WITH ZOOMLanguage: English\nResearch on student voice suggests that children’s perspectives are important in the efforts to promote equal education opportunities to culturally-diverse student population. Despite the increased attention student voice has received\, children’s critiques and reflections of their socio-educational experiences are usually ignored by their schools. This aims to reflect on how student voice could support intercultural efforts in schools by investigating the ways in which immigrant and native children in primary schools perceive cultural diversity and its implications on their daily lives. This research can be very informative for the formation of future policies\, practices\, and teaching methodologies in culturally-diverse schools. \nSpeaker\nChristina Hadjisoteriou\nUniversity of Nicosia\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Stepping up to the plate! How technology has supported ODL during and after the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Format: Short presentations followed by panel discussion\nDescription:\nThe pandemic caused by COVID19 brought about an acceleration in the already existing transition from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online and distance education. The initial switch to “emergency remote teaching”\, in fire-fighting mode\, gave way gradually to finer-grained and more sophisticated e-learning scenarios\, mixing synchronous and asynchronous practices with multimodal resources. While educationalists have quite rightly been very visible during this period\, supporting the different pedagogical aspects\, it is without a doubt the underlying technology\, robust and scalable\, that has made this transition possible. The management of this process has been a challenge to the technologists working in this area. In today’s webinar we will hear from experts in the field of edtech on how they responded to the demands of teaching staff during the pandemic and how they see the online educational future from here outwards.\n[bookline] \nModerator\nAlastair Creelman\nspecialist in the field of online and distance education\, Section for higher education development\nLinnaeus University\, Sweden.\nAlastair Creelman is a specialist in the field of online and distance education based in the section for higher education development. SUMMARY:A Report Card on the Crisis: What is the Legacy of the Great Onlining of Higher Education?
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel discussion\nDescription\nIn this session we will reflect on the present situation in higher education in post pandemic times by asking several key questions. How well did we cope and what lessons did we learn? How are those lessons reflected in future planning? What now? We plan to discuss how we can take this opportunity and the legacy of a crisis to rethink traditional models of teaching and learning.  What should stay and what needs to change? Will higher education ever be the same again? Will we be able to retain the advantages and benefits of gaining more experience in online education\, or will we feel compelled to get back to “normal” times? Why did we need a pandemic as the catalyst for the digital transformation of higher education? What is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? Has the future of online education been endangered by emergency remote teaching? What are some of the debates and challenges we need to address in establishing the place of online education in the higher education ecosystem? SUMMARY:Making Higher Education 4.0: The Inside Story
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel discussion\nDescription\nJoin us in this webinar for a unique insiders’ glimpse into a future-focused course developed on the FutureLearn platform called Higher Education 4.0: Certifying your Future. This MOOC was first offered in March 2021 in response to the so-called future skills agenda and the rapid growth of the micro-credentialing movement. It also explores how these change forces align with new models of pedagogy for new times. After a brief tour of the MOOC\, the panel will share how the idea for this free online course came about\, the learning design process that was adopted in developing the MOOC\, and valuable lessons and critical reflections arising from the first offering of the course. The panel discussion will provide an opportunity to talk about what role MOOCs can play\, if any\, in the effective continuing professional learning and development of higher educators. Webinar participants will be able to view and provide critical and constructive feedback on the second facilitated offering of the MOOC which runs throughout November 2021. SUMMARY:The Great EODL Week Debate: Online Learning vs. Traditional Face-to-Face Models of Education
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDebate\nDescription:The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in many universities and colleges rapidly pivoting to online learning in response to unprecedented times. SUMMARY:Next normal: Including students’ views into shaping future higher education
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATION \nPresentation with discussion\nDescription:The past months have changed higher education in a quick and unprecedented way: from March on\, Higher Education has mostly happened online and at distance. Since then\, we have interviewed students on their experiences\, ideas and visions on studying now and in the future for our podcast series “Studium im Shutdown” and “NextNormal”. But what should the “NextNormal” of European student life look like? How can we learn from the digital turn in order to create a better future higher education? In our webinar\, we want to talk about the past months\, but also about how students perceived being heard and included in the debate or not – and what potentials there are in better including them for creating a better future of higher education together. We will talk to learning innovation expert Ulf-Daniel Ehlers\, a student participation expert from ESU and to students that have been part of the podcast series in order to discuss ways of including students into creating a better future higher education.Moderator:Ulf-Daniel EhlersEDEN EC member\, Chair of Educational Management and Lifelong Learning at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Karlsruhe\, learning innovation expert\, Vice-president of EURASHE\, GermanyUlf-Daniel Ehlers is a learning innovation expert\, founder of mindful-leaders.net\, serial entrepreneur\, and Professor for Educational Management and Lifelong Learning at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Karlsruhe in 2011. SUMMARY:Open Education Technologies for online education
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPresentation and panel discussion\nDescription:In the last months the world of education has seen its major changes from decades. By remote learning and teaching\, moving education from in-campus to online\, hybrid education\, all educational institutions have relied on educational technologies. The education actively responded to these changes by including more and more open education principles\, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational\, open source\, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations\, open source projects\, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies\, content\, and standards in education. They are guided by the 12 principles as listed in the Barcelona Blueprint 2019 and they constantly plan to thrive the learning ecosystems. This workshop intends to discuss its guiding principles but also to present some recent developments with technologies in innovative education. Moodle\, MoodleNet\, H5P\, BigBlueButton and RaspberryPi are among the most used open source solutions\, and the future plans for development will be presented. What the ECCOE system has to offerSummary: The European Commission has noted the difficulties that limit the cross-institutional recognition of higher education and upper secondary diplomas. Any automatic mutual recognition that they might highlight as being desirable still seems a long way off\, even though the advantages are clear both for students and institutions. As an important step towards such a solution to this problem\, the ECCOE system (European Credit Clearinghouse for Opening up Education)\, represents an attempt to facilitate the endorsement and appropriation of open\, online and flexible higher education by increasing trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. The role of Model Credit Recognition Agreements (MCRAs) will be discussed together with aspects of their use that have emerged from the first round of an in-house peer review of their functionality. A reflection will follow on what might be needed for a successful future wide-spread adoption of the ECCOE system. \n\nAlicia MiklavčičEURASHE Alicia Leonor Sauli Miklavčič is Head of Development at the Slovene Association HVC\, a member of the EURASHE Board and Working Group on Employability & LLL\, an expert on Short Cycle Higher Education. The prototype enables management of identity\, apprenticeship design\, recording details of placements\, assigning and documenting learning activities during placement\, monitoring progress per competence\, feedback & evaluation\, assessment and reporting\, as well as database of final credentials. The presentation will include a good practice of distant apprenticeship as well as the final conclusions of the survey among students and teachers on distance learning during the Covid19 lockdown. \n  \n\nMatti IsokallioEUproVET  Matti Isokallio has been in different positions in the field of education more than 20 years. He worked in regional University of Applied Science more than a decade. At that period\, he was ECTS and Diploma Supplement Counsellor supporting implementing the Bologna process in European level and in national level. Currently he is director of regional VET provider and president of EUproVET\, one of the European VET provider associations. Isokallio chairs international WG of AMKE. AMKE is Finnish VET providers association.Title: Innovative teaching and guidance provision\, case FinlandSummary: Finland has combined all VET legislation in one law since 2018. In vocational education and training\, work-based learning is planned as part of the student’s personal competence development plan. For work-based learning\, students have either an apprenticeship agreement or a training agreement. This has put VET providers in a challenging position to offer high quality teaching and guidance in all forms including digital teaching and guidance. \n
