SUMMARY:Stepping up to the plate! How technology has supported ODL during and after the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Format: Short presentations followed by panel discussion\nDescription:\nThe pandemic caused by COVID19 brought about an acceleration in the already existing transition from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online and distance education. The initial switch to “emergency remote teaching”\, in fire-fighting mode\, gave way gradually to finer-grained and more sophisticated e-learning scenarios\, mixing synchronous and asynchronous practices with multimodal resources. While educationalists have quite rightly been very visible during this period\, supporting the different pedagogical aspects\, it is without a doubt the underlying technology\, robust and scalable\, that has made this transition possible. The management of this process has been a challenge to the technologists working in this area. SUMMARY:A Report Card on the Crisis: What is the Legacy of the Great Onlining of Higher Education?
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel discussion\nDescription\nIn this session we will reflect on the present situation in higher education in post pandemic times by asking several key questions. How well did we cope and what lessons did we learn? How are those lessons reflected in future planning? What now? We plan to discuss how we can take this opportunity and the legacy of a crisis to rethink traditional models of teaching and learning.  What should stay and what needs to change? Will higher education ever be the same again? Will we be able to retain the advantages and benefits of gaining more experience in online education\, or will we feel compelled to get back to “normal” times? Why did we need a pandemic as the catalyst for the digital transformation of higher education? What is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? Has the future of online education been endangered by emergency remote teaching? What are some of the debates and challenges we need to address in establishing the place of online education in the higher education ecosystem? SUMMARY:Digitally enhanced learning at European higher education institutions – state of play and prospects
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONPresentation with DiscussionsDescription:  The presentation will provide some data from the DIGI-HE survey report carried from March to June 2020 (within the framework of the Erasmus+ EUA-led project\, DIGI-HE). The European University Association carried out a survey on digitally enhanced learning and teaching among higher education institutions across Europe. Coinciding with the lockdown and physical distancing\, the survey results provide some information on the sector’s crisis response\, but mainly focussed on the status ante\, and on a plan for the future. The online survey was open to universities and other higher education institutions across Europe. About 80% of the participating 368 respondents in 48 European countries are conventional universities offering mainly on-campus tuition\, although the majority offered\, already before the crisis blended and also some online learning\, usually through short courses. This survey is a timely update to EUA’s 2013 survey on e-learning\,  also as it provides some insights on how institutions responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this session\, some of the key findings of this survey will be presented\, and discussed with a panel of three university representatives. SUMMARY:The Great EODL Week Debate: Online Learning vs. Traditional Face-to-Face Models of Education
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDebate\nDescription:The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in many universities and colleges rapidly pivoting to online learning in response to unprecedented times. While 2020 has been described as the year of “the great onlining” of higher education there remains a common perception that online learning is inferior to traditional face-to-face models of education. This debate aims to confront this perception as two teams respond to the moot\, “this house believes that online learning is just as good as traditional face-to-face models of education”. The debate is intended to address this serious issue as panel members present and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of online learning in comparison to traditional delivery modes in both a scholarly and entertaining manner. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on our experience of online learning over 2020 and to ponder the future of high education in the post-pandemic digital society.Moderator: Tom FarrellySocial Science Lecturer & Educational Developer IT Tralee Tom Farrelly has lectured on Social Care\, Early Childhood\, Youth and Community and Nursing UG and Post-grad degrees\, primarily in Sociology and Research Methods. SUMMARY:Open Education Technologies for online education
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPresentation and panel discussion\nDescription:In the last months the world of education has seen its major changes from decades. By remote learning and teaching\, moving education from in-campus to online\, hybrid education\, all educational institutions have relied on educational technologies. The education actively responded to these changes by including more and more open education principles\, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational\, open source\, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations\, open source projects\, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies\, content\, and standards in education. They are guided by the 12 principles as listed in the Barcelona Blueprint 2019 and they constantly plan to thrive the learning ecosystems. This workshop intends to discuss its guiding principles but also to present some recent developments with technologies in innovative education. Moodle\, MoodleNet\, H5P\, BigBlueButton and RaspberryPi are among the most used open source solutions\, and the future plans for development will be presented. What the ECCOE system has to offerSummary: The European Commission has noted the difficulties that limit the cross-institutional recognition of higher education and upper secondary diplomas. Any automatic mutual recognition that they might highlight as being desirable still seems a long way off\, even though the advantages are clear both for students and institutions. As an important step towards such a solution to this problem\, the ECCOE system (European Credit Clearinghouse for Opening up Education)\, represents an attempt to facilitate the endorsement and appropriation of open\, online and flexible higher education by increasing trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. The role of Model Credit Recognition Agreements (MCRAs) will be discussed together with aspects of their use that have emerged from the first round of an in-house peer review of their functionality. A reflection will follow on what might be needed for a successful future wide-spread adoption of the ECCOE system. \n\nAlicia MiklavčičEURASHE Alicia Leonor Sauli Miklavčič is Head of Development at the Slovene Association HVC\, a member of the EURASHE Board and Working Group on Employability & LLL\, an expert on Short Cycle Higher Education. She established the first Slovene ERASMUS Placement Consortium\, the Slovene ERASMUS PHE Alumni Club and ERASMUS PHE Teacher & Staff Club and contributed to the selection of Wood Technology School Maribor\, Higher Vocational College as Erasmus Success Stories 2012 by the European Commission.Title: Smart e-Quality@WBLSummary: An innovative digital management tool developed under the auspices of the Apprentice Track project will be presented. The prototype enables management of identity\, apprenticeship design\, recording details of placements\, assigning and documenting learning activities during placement\, monitoring progress per competence\, feedback & evaluation\, assessment and reporting\, as well as database of final credentials. The presentation will include a good practice of distant apprenticeship as well as the final conclusions of the survey among students and teachers on distance learning during the Covid19 lockdown. \n  \n\nMatti IsokallioEUproVET  Matti Isokallio has been in different positions in the field of education more than 20 years. He worked in regional University of Applied Science more than a decade. At that period\, he was ECTS and Diploma Supplement Counsellor supporting implementing the Bologna process in European level and in national level. Currently he is director of regional VET provider and president of EUproVET\, one of the European VET provider associations. Isokallio chairs international WG of AMKE. AMKE is Finnish VET providers association.Title: Innovative teaching and guidance provision\, case FinlandSummary: Finland has combined all VET legislation in one law since 2018. In vocational education and training\, work-based learning is planned as part of the student’s personal competence development plan. For work-based learning\, students have either an apprenticeship agreement or a training agreement. This has put VET providers in a challenging position to offer high quality teaching and guidance in all forms including digital teaching and guidance. \n

SUMMARY:What might the future hold for distance education universities?
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording\nFormat: Presentation with discussion \nDescription:  In this webinar four experts in the field of e-learning and distance education will reflect upon how the very nature of learning at a distance is changing to meet the needs of the modern society\, reductions in expenditure in higher education\, the incursion of face-to-face universities in this area\, changes in institutional structure\, and the ever-advancing role of technology. Historically\, distance education institutions stood apart from their face-to-face rivals with educational models that were very different\, reflecting a variety of types of students. Nowadays\, with the pace of modern society and the need for constant updating of our knowledge and qualifications\, the demand for e-learning and distance education has increased. However\, traditional face-to-face universities have extended their educational offer to try to meet this demand\, arguably blurring the difference between the two types of institutions. This convergence together with the corresponding expansion of technology-enhanced learning and reductions in funding is arguably leaving distance education universities in a state of crisis. The webinar explores the issues related to this crisis and looks at what the future might hold for this educational modality and the institutions that champion it! The way that learners are learning is changing dramatically. Today learning is available anywhere\, and everywhere\, and through any kind of device. Mobile learning is the first choice for most people today. Within a context of globalization and the knowledge economy\, the quality of higher education is increasingly regarded as strategically important for national economic development and competitiveness. High quality and relevant higher education equips students with the knowledge\, skills and core transferable competences they need to succeed after graduation\, within a high-quality learning environment which recognizes and supports good learning and  teaching. The recommendations in the occasional paper on Considerations for quality assurance of e-learning provision by ENQA are applicable to all forms of e-learning\, i.e. learning which is facilitated through the use of ICT. Besides examining the applicability and relevance of the standards defined in the ESG 2015\, this document is meant to initiate discussion and the thinking processes of stakeholders involved\, e.g. HEIs\, QA agencies\, etc. Read more https://enqa.eu/indirme/papers-and-reports/occasional-papers/Considerations%20for%20QA%20of%20e-learning%20provision.pdf \nMoreover\, the TeSLA project will be discussed. The TeSLA system is a project funded by the European Commission. It will follow the interoperability standards for integration into different learning environment and it will be developed to reduce the current restrictions of time and physical space in teaching and learning\, which opens up new opportunities for learners with physical or mental disabilities as well as respecting social and cultural differences. https://tesla-project.eu \nIn addition\, the EDEN SIG on TEL and quality enhancement will be presented\, which aim is to advocate and work for renewing the quality agenda in education. SUMMARY:New Learning Spaces to Support the EU 2020 Learning-Intensive Society
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel debate\nDescription: \n“Learning Spaces” (LS) is the term used in a report published in 2006 by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies\, “as a way to embrace a different view of future learning”. The context for learning in the schools and HEIs\, at any level\, is already changing\, and thus the characteristics and enabling infrastructure for learning spaces may also be changing. In this webinar strategies to plan and design new Learning Spaces\, related to the modern Learning-Intensive Society\, will be discussed. Two ancient\, long established and multidisciplinary Universities (Pavia -Italy- and Uppsala -Sweden-) will share their experience in this field\, highlighting the challenge to “promote the future” in historical buildings\, so rich in art\, culture and architectural constraints. \nExamples will be given of good learning practices and learning paths developed in Pavia and Uppsala LSs. \nPresenters: \n\nStefano Govoni\, ViceRector\, University of Pavia\nMarco Morandotti\, Deputy Rector for Real Estate\, University of Pavia\nMats Cullhed\, University of Uppsala\, Coimbra Group\nElena Caldirola\, University of Pavia\n\nwatch the recording
