SUMMARY:EDEN NAP Webinar - Academic Freedom vs. Algorithmic Reality: Who shapes the digital classroom?\,  April 28 at 13:00 CET
DESCRIPTION:Academic Freedom vs. Algorithmic Reality: Who shapes the digital classroom? \n\n\n\nWhose freedom is it anyway? As AI moves from the sidelines to the centre of higher education\, we face a new “algorithmic reality.” This webinar explores whether the digital tools we use to teach and research are silently standardizing the very art of academic inquiry. We will seek to take a look at the tension between high-tech innovation and the fundamental right to maintain a unique\, independent academic voice. The session features a dual-perspective dialogue: assoc. prof. Aušrinė Pasvenskienė (Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania) will address the legal and ethical safeguards needed to protect scholars in a digitalised world\, while prof. John G. Keating (Maynooth University\, Ireland) will explore how the design of our digital environments—from AI assistants to collaborative platforms—shapes our discourse and limits or expands our pedagogical autonomy. Join us for this presentation and discussion to discover how we can harness technology without letting algorithms replace our own pedagogical decisions.Duration: 90 minutes   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWATCH NOW\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nAssoc. prof. Giedrė Tamoliūnė \n\n\n\n\nDr. Giedrė Tamoliūnė is an associate professor at Education Academy and senior specialist at the Institute for Study Innovations at Vytautas Magnus University. She is involved in European and national scientific and applied projects focusing on technology-enhanced teaching and learning aspects. Her research interests focus on technology-enhanced teaching and learning in higher education\, digitally competent educators and institutions\, the cooperation between EdTech and educational institutions\, AI in education\, and adult education. She has been a Steering Committee member of the EDEN Network of Academics and Professionals (NAP) since 2023.  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresenters\n\n\n\n\nAssoc. Prof. dr. Aušrinė Pasvenskienė\n\n\n\n\nAušrinė Pasvenskienė is an assoc. prof.\, vice dean at the Faculty of Law\, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU\, Kaunas\, Lithuania)\, a researcher at Vytautas Kavolis Transdisciplinary Research Institute (VMU); a chair of VMU ethics committee; a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Law\, Helsinki University (Finland). She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Baltic Journal of Law and Politics\, is the Principal Investigator for the Erasmus+ project “Modernization of Legal Education for the Support of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine” (EU4UA)\, is a member of the European Association of Education Law and Policy. Her research interests include education law\, human rights in education\, the intersection of law and digital technologies\, also law\, education and digital technologies.  \n\n\n\n\nProf. dr. John G. Keating \n\n\n\n\nJohn G. Keating is Professor of Computer Science at Maynooth University\, where he serves as Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. A mathematician and computational scientist by training — with a BSc in Mathematics and Physics\, a PhD in Atmospheric Physics\, and postgraduate qualifications in science education and applied linguistics — he brings an unusually cross-disciplinary perspective to questions of technology and pedagogy. John’s current research sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence\, higher education practice\, and curriculum quality. He leads an active programme investigating AI-assisted coding\, automated analysis of learning outcomes at national scale\, and the linguistic dimensions of human-AI interaction in educational settings. Within Maynooth\, he is a leading institutional voice on AI in higher education\, regularly advising on policy\, ethics\, and pedagogical design. His particular interest for this panel lies in how the architecture of digital tools — from AI coding assistants to learning management systems — encodes assumptions about knowledge\, inquiry\, and academic voice\, often invisibly. He argues that pedagogical autonomy in the AI era requires not just policy protection but genuine digital and curricular literacy: the capacity to interrogate the tools we use\, not merely deploy them.

DESCRIPTION:EDEN NAP Webinar – Critical GenAI Literacy in Online Education\,  February 4 at 16:00 CET\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVisual Metaphors and Critical Visual Literacy as Pathways to Critical GenAI Literacy in Online Education \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGenerative AI is often introduced in education through powerful visual metaphors\, such as co-pilots\, digital brains\, or helpful assistants\, that shape how learners and educators understand\, trust\, and use these tools. While such images make GenAI more accessible\, they also embed assumptions about agency\, intelligence\, and risk that often go unexamined. \n\n\n\nThis webinar explores how visual metaphors influence perceptions of GenAI in learning contexts and why critical visual literacy is essential for developing critical GenAI literacy. Drawing on examples from educational platforms and AI tools\, the session invites participants to look beyond surface-level visuals and interrogate the ideological and pedagogical messages they convey. The webinar concludes with implications for teaching and learning design\, supporting more reflective\, ethical\, and informed engagement with GenAI in education. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWATCH NOW\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nMark McCormack\n\n\n\n\nMark McCormack is a Ph.D. Candidate of Maynooth University\, Ireland. SUMMARY:Digital skills and training practices in disruptive industries: a European perspective
DESCRIPTION:Description\nNew\, flexible and on-demand skills training is needed to tackle digital disruption and generate employment and productivity\, especially in disruptive industries. According to OECD\, many EU countries have a strong focus on formal education which does not lead to the desired results. Especially adults with low skills are left behind and participation does not always yield good labor market outcomes for them. This EDEN NAP webinar presents an analysis on how companies and company members approach learning\, training and digital technologies in various disruptive sectors in four European countries. This analysis has been carried out within the framework of the Erasmus+ Project StiLLLearning\, a project aimed at 1. identifying the most relevant key competences needed in European disruptive industries; 2. Co-creating an idea back for innovative learning and training solutions for work-based learning 3. Designing and implementing an open hypervideo-based cMOOC (collaborative massive open online course) for competence developers in industries and vocational and adult educators https://www.stilllearning.net/A total of 63 participants were interviewed from Tourism (Italy and Switzerland)\, Textile (Italy and Switzerland)\, Automotive (Germany)\, Building (Switzerland) and Bioeconomy (Finland) sectors. The speakers will present the general results of this international study\, discussing differences and similarities among sectors\, countries and roles (employer\, employee and adult educators). Results suggest that the most mentioned tools for learning at work were for communication\, followed by productivity and video tools\, whereas learning content management systems and innovative applications were less recognised. After the presentation of the general results\, each speaker will discuss some qualitative country-based considerations. Discussion with participants will be focused on practical implications for HR managers\, learning specialists and VET schools in disruptive industries.Type of session: presentations with discussion \n  \nModerators\nFrancesca AmenduniSenior Researcher\, SFUVET\, SwitzerlandFrancesca Amenduni is a member of the Steering Committee of the EDEN Network of Academic and Professionals. SUMMARY:What do I do as an educator with learning analytics?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nIn this interactive webinar for EDEN\, we will share lived experiences of how four organisations in six countries are using learning analytics on a daily basis. Some of these organisations have implemented learning analytics at an institutional scale\, while others have created more specific and bespoke applications and practices. At least two of these organisations provide rich learning analytics data directly to students\, while all four also provide rich and aggregate data to educators. For example\, at Nottingham Trent University students can easily access their own data about how engaged they are with their studies. At Maastricht University in one course students are given their own data about their learning dispositions and engagement data\, which they use for learning statistics and afterwards use to reflect on their practice. In other institutions like the Open University over 3000 teachers are given weekly data about their students via interactive dashboards\, and whether (or not) the predictive learning analytics system predicts whether a student will pass the next assignment. At Mountain Heights Academy\, an online high school in the US\, teachers are using an Action Dashboard (or data-driven to-do list) to spend more time reaching out to their students rather than clicking through disparate systems to find the data they need to intervene with struggling students. In this webinar we specifically will focus on the role of the educator\, and how you could use learning analytics in your own classroom. Each of the five speakers will provide practical examples of their practice\, and you will be able to work with real-examples of how to consider applying learning analytics. \n  \nType of session: presentations with discussion\nModerator\nIgor BalabanEDEN NAP SC memberAssociate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning\, University of Zagreb\, Croatia \nIgor Balaban is Associate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning. SUMMARY:Teaching Online Competences: Debate in a Post Confinement Scenario
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nIn recent months teachers needed to perform their activities online without proper training. They had to perform their duties in an unknown scenario for most of them. This fact and the already existing need of a teacher online reference framework motivate the need to discuss a set of teaching online requirements. SUMMARY:ODL Unplugged: A Question of Care
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there!WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.Panel Format:  Conversational and informal \nDescription\n\nAs online and distance learning (ODL) instructors\, managers or members of support teams in the current pandemic\, we are challenged with a multitude of demands on our time and energy. A central responsibility right now is providing care and support for students and ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their new online learning environments\, or supporting teachers so that they are in a position to provide that care. Many of us must also care for our children and/or other family members during the lockdown\, in addition to carrying out teaching and other work activities from home. Most importantly\, though\, we need to find the time and space for self-care: focusing on ensuring that one stays strong and healthy in order to care for others. \nDuring this session\, our panel of experts will talk about the topic of care and self-care\, particularly within online and distance learning environments. Joining our panel of experts will be Deborah Arnold from AUNEGe in France\, Dr. Paul Prinsloo from the University of South Africa\, Eszter Salamon from Parents International in The Netherlands\, and Dr. Jane Brindley from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada.   Moderating the session will be Dr. Don Olcott\, Jr.\, Global Higher Education Consultant from Romania. We look forward to seeing you at the webinar! \n  \n\nOpening Panelist Questions – All Panelists will Answer:\n\n1) What can we learn and transfer from existing experiences in remote working with and managing remote teams to online? What else is needed to ensure self-care and care for others?2) What insights can we draw from the research on e-leadership and e-management? SUMMARY:Designing inclusive and engaging structures to facilitate creativity and learning
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording \nDescription\nThis talk explores three principles for inclusive innovation and describes three research and development projects through which these principles have been developed and applied. Rather than seeing the need to be accessible to all as a barrier to innovation\, innovation in educational projects can be at its most effective when the goals and processes are inclusive. \nThe projects described all aimed to create novel and inclusive systems through which people engage and learn. This is achieved through 1) Starting with the audiences who face challenges and then find opportunities to innovate for all; 2) Exploring simple\, novel ways to get people to be creative to open up new ways of thinking and participation; and 3) Considering accessibility from the beginning of the process\, to create results that are both innovative and inclusive. \nThe projects are: \n\nOut There and In Here\, which developed new forms of collaborative activities at a distance\, inspired by work to make fieldwork accessible to learners with physical disabilities;\nArtMaps\, which developed a platform for members of the public to create interpretations of the locational relevance of items in a museum collection; and\nOur Journey\, which provides a simple and engaging structure for learners to represent their study journeys.\n\nYou will meet\nTim Coughlan \nTim Coughlan is a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University\, UK. His research crosses the areas of Education and Human-Computer Interaction and is particularly focused on the design and evaluation of systems that support inclusion\, creativity\, and openness in learning. \nCurrent and recent research projects include designing tools for the representation of challenges and achievements in study journeys (Our Journey)\, improving support in online and open education for disabled students (ADMINS\, Ed-ICT\, Open Learning and Accessibility)\, and teaching community-led design practices through online courses (Empowering Design Practices). \nProfile: https://iet.open.ac.uk/people/tim.coughlan
