SUMMARY:What do I do as an educator with learning analytics?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nIn this interactive webinar for EDEN\, we will share lived experiences of how four organisations in six countries are using learning analytics on a daily basis. Some of these organisations have implemented learning analytics at an institutional scale\, while others have created more specific and bespoke applications and practices. At least two of these organisations provide rich learning analytics data directly to students\, while all four also provide rich and aggregate data to educators. For example\, at Nottingham Trent University students can easily access their own data about how engaged they are with their studies. At Maastricht University in one course students are given their own data about their learning dispositions and engagement data\, which they use for learning statistics and afterwards use to reflect on their practice. In other institutions like the Open University over 3000 teachers are given weekly data about their students via interactive dashboards\, and whether (or not) the predictive learning analytics system predicts whether a student will pass the next assignment. At Mountain Heights Academy\, an online high school in the US\, teachers are using an Action Dashboard (or data-driven to-do list) to spend more time reaching out to their students rather than clicking through disparate systems to find the data they need to intervene with struggling students. In this webinar we specifically will focus on the role of the educator\, and how you could use learning analytics in your own classroom. Each of the five speakers will provide practical examples of their practice\, and you will be able to work with real-examples of how to consider applying learning analytics. \n  \nType of session: presentations with discussion\nModerator\nIgor BalabanEDEN NAP SC memberAssociate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning\, University of Zagreb\, Croatia \nIgor Balaban is Associate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning. His main task is the teaching of introductory mathematics and statistics to large sections of first-year students. That teaching applies blended learning following the flipped-class philosophy\, where LA serves the function of supporting students to self-regulate the learning in the e-tutorials. Our LA takes into account both log data from e-tutorials as well as survey data of learning dispositions\, enabling richer learning feedback. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nDr Robert BodilyZappee\, LLCDr. Robert Bodily received his PhD in educational technology from Brigham Young University. His research focuses on improving teaching and learning using learning analytics data and methods. He specifically focuses on teacher-facing and student-facing learning analytics dashboards\, and is currently working on an Action Dashboard to help teachers reach out more effectively to struggling students. He works as a Senior Data Scientist and Researcher\, bringing expertise from the data side and the research side to make his learning analytics tools more effective.

SUMMARY:Designing online courses: a practical approach
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nLiving in these times is challenging for everyone involved in education\, students and teachers alike. Many teachers woke up one day with the obligation to transfer all their teaching to the online environment. However\, many of them lacked the knowledge on how to do this in an optimal way\, due to reasons varying from lack of ICT skills to lack of training offered by educational institutions. The question that arises here is how to efficiently transfer teaching practice online\, using the available tools\, avoiding to use learning management systems as online repositories. This webinar proposes to fill parts of the gaps existing in teachers’ knowledge related to instructional and learning design in regards to online education\, by presenting hands-on approaches already used by teachers who are experienced with online learning and especially in transferring teaching methods online. There are two main topics which will be presented during this webinar: \n\nBest practices of instructional and learning used in different online courses.\nIntegration of MOOCs in online learning courses.\n\n\nModerators\nIgor BalabanEDEN NAP SC memberAssociate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning\, University of Zagreb\, Croatia \nIgor Balaban is Associate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning. SUMMARY:Teaching Online Competences: Debate in a Post Confinement Scenario
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nIn recent months teachers needed to perform their activities online without proper training. They had to perform their duties in an unknown scenario for most of them. This fact and the already existing need of a teacher online reference framework motivate the need to discuss a set of teaching online requirements. A proposal already discussed by the EDEN Executive Committee will be presented followed by experiences learned. The proposal is based on a CALOHEE publication “Guidelines and Reference Points for the Design and Delivery of Degree Programmes in Teacher Education” by Julia M. González Ferreras and Maria Yarosh. A set of competencies required to teach online for level 6 of the EQF will be presented in terms of descriptors. The debate of the webinar is expected to be useful to tune the future terms of reference and to learn from recent experiences of shifting to online mode. \n  \nYou will meet\nAlfredo SoeiroEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,University of Porto\, PortugalDegrees in Civil Engineering (U. SUMMARY:ODL Unplugged: A Question of Care
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there!WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.Panel Format:  Conversational and informal \nDescription\n\nAs online and distance learning (ODL) instructors\, managers or members of support teams in the current pandemic\, we are challenged with a multitude of demands on our time and energy. A central responsibility right now is providing care and support for students and ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their new online learning environments\, or supporting teachers so that they are in a position to provide that care. Many of us must also care for our children and/or other family members during the lockdown\, in addition to carrying out teaching and other work activities from home. Most importantly\, though\, we need to find the time and space for self-care: focusing on ensuring that one stays strong and healthy in order to care for others. \nDuring this session\, our panel of experts will talk about the topic of care and self-care\, particularly within online and distance learning environments. Joining our panel of experts will be Deborah Arnold from AUNEGe in France\, Dr. Paul Prinsloo from the University of South Africa\, Eszter Salamon from Parents International in The Netherlands\, and Dr. Jane Brindley from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada.   Moderating the session will be Dr. Don Olcott\, Jr.\, Global Higher Education Consultant from Romania. We look forward to seeing you at the webinar! \n  \n\nOpening Panelist Questions – All Panelists will Answer:\n\n1) What can we learn and transfer from existing experiences in remote working with and managing remote teams to online? What else is needed to ensure self-care and care for others?2) What insights can we draw from the research on e-leadership and e-management? SUMMARY:Designing inclusive and engaging structures to facilitate creativity and learning
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording \nDescription\nThis talk explores three principles for inclusive innovation and describes three research and development projects through which these principles have been developed and applied. Rather than seeing the need to be accessible to all as a barrier to innovation\, innovation in educational projects can be at its most effective when the goals and processes are inclusive. \nThe projects described all aimed to create novel and inclusive systems through which people engage and learn. This is achieved through 1) Starting with the audiences who face challenges and then find opportunities to innovate for all; 2) Exploring simple\, novel ways to get people to be creative to open up new ways of thinking and participation; and 3) Considering accessibility from the beginning of the process\, to create results that are both innovative and inclusive. \nThe projects are: \n\nOut There and In Here\, which developed new forms of collaborative activities at a distance\, inspired by work to make fieldwork accessible to learners with physical disabilities;\nArtMaps\, which developed a platform for members of the public to create interpretations of the locational relevance of items in a museum collection; and\nOur Journey\, which provides a simple and engaging structure for learners to represent their study journeys.\n\nYou will meet\nTim Coughlan \nTim Coughlan is a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University\, UK. His research crosses the areas of Education and Human-Computer Interaction and is particularly focused on the design and evaluation of systems that support inclusion\, creativity\, and openness in learning. \nCurrent and recent research projects include designing tools for the representation of challenges and achievements in study journeys (Our Journey)\, improving support in online and open education for disabled students (ADMINS\, Ed-ICT\, Open Learning and Accessibility)\, and teaching community-led design practices through online courses (Empowering Design Practices). \nProfile: https://iet.open.ac.uk/people/tim.coughlan

SUMMARY:Are Automatic Transcriptions Good Enough for Accessibility?
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nIn this webinar Dr Tharindu Liyanagunawardena will talk about her research\, Automatic Transcription Software: Good Enough for Accessibility? A case study from built environment education\, which was awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the 28th EDEN annual conference\, Bruges\, Belgium 16-19 June 2019. \nThe increasing use of multimedia in learning resources in higher education poses a challenge for learners with hearing disabilities\, unless these are accompanied by transcripts or captions. Accessibility has gained centre stage in the UK recently with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018\, enforcement of EU directive on accessibility becoming the law. \nThis paper reports on a small study where six Automatic Transcription Software (ATS) were analysed for their accuracy. If you are interested in accessibility\, practical uses of available technologies and how they make a difference to students’ learning this will be a useful session for you. \nQuestions to consider\n\nHow effective are current ATS providers?\nCould transcripts have other benefits for students?\nAre we considering ‘accessibility’ broadly enough?\n\nYou will meet\nTharindu Liyanagunawardena \nLearning Technology Researcher and the Chair of the Online Learning Research Centre at the University College of Estate Management\, United Kingdom. The development where learners take personal responsibility for their own learning is only one of the issues when quality is discussed\, another problem is when quality is expressed as norm-based versus process-based. \nIn view of the global challenges associated with education\, there is an urgent need to redefine quality issues. The quality of e-learning is a constant debate and discussion. Quality in this respect is complex and can either be easily defined or must be elaborated to a high and deep degree. There may be more questions than answers. First\, the five most frequently asked questions have to be answered. What do we mean by quality? Why is it important? Who’s involved? Quality for whom? When should quality be measured? In addition\, the quality can be seen at various levels: nano\, micro\, meso\, macro. \nThe webinar will address the current discourse and quality issues in open flexible online learning\, including e-learning. \nYou will meet\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson \n\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson is an independent researcher\, expert\, quality assessor and influencer in the fields of open online flexible\, distance learning\, including e-learning TEL\, OER and MOOCs. Her focus is on quality\, innovation\, leadership\, and personal\, learning. She is in EDEN EC\, Chair the EDEN SIG for TEL and quality enhancement\, EDEN Fellow\, and EDEN Council of Fellows. She is in the ICDE EC\, and Chair the ICDE Advocacy Committee\, for the worldwide advocacy of OER. Ossiannilsson is a quality expert and reviewer for ICDE\, and the EADTU\, and an evaluator and expert for the European Commission. She works with the Swedish Institute of Standards and ISO. She is a member of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition Sweden. Ossiannilsson is VP of the Swedish Association for Distance Education. SUMMARY:Widening access to open education - the way forward. What the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us
DESCRIPTION:Widening access to open education – the way forward\nWhat the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us\nwebinar Recording \nDescription\nThe ideas and practices that underlie open education have been around for a very long time. Given the promise of such a democratic approach to teaching and learning it is perhaps surprising that it is not more widely used. When Massive Online Open Courses (or MOOCs) appeared on the public radar around 2012 they looked a game-changer\, something that could\, once and for all\, change the role of open education and its importance in the educational landscape. However\, seven years later\, while there is a wide range of these courses available\, little change has taken place in the widespread adoption of open education. \nAs a result of the research undertaken in the MOONLITE project\, and different and varied interchanges of ideas\, debates\, and collaborations with other academics and experts in the field of open education and social inclusion\, it has been possible to identify seven key challenges\, that we believe still need to be addressed to take open education to the next level. Namely: \n\nimproving access to MOOCs and open education;\nkeeping MOOCs open and free;\nthe need for support in inclusive MOOCs;\ndesigning and developing MOOCs for social inclusion;\nthe recognition of prior learning and MOOC certification;\nthe need for open education policies at national and international levels;\nnew funding and business models.\n\nIn this webinar we will present and discuss these challenges and consider how to widen access to open education. \nQuestions to consider\n\nIf education is a basic human right then why is so much knowledge / educational content locked away in not-for-free sources?\nOpen education\, in the sense of resources and practices\, seems to offer a solution to the access problem. So why is it not more widely used or appreciated?\nAre MOOCs the educational panacea they were once thought to be\, or just another step on the evolutionary ladder toward next-generation teaching and learning\, being inevitably forgotten and overlooked with time?\n\nParticipation and privacy\nThis webinar will feature small group discussions so please make sure you have a web camera and headset activated before you join the meeting. The main part of the webinar will be recorded but not the group discussions. Your name will not be visible in the recording\, neither will the chat session. \nYou will meet\nTimothy Read is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED\, Spain. He has held a range of positions in the university government at UNED and is currently Pro-Vice Chancellor of Methodology and Technology. He is an EDEN Fellow and also the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and is currently working in European and nationally funded projects in the area of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and massive open online courses for languages (LMOOCs). \n  \n  \nAlastair Creelman \nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. SUMMARY:Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case
DESCRIPTION:The “Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 3 April 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Francesca Amenduni from the University of Foggia and Roma TRE University\, Italy in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nRegister for the webinar \nIn the context of Open Education\, quality assessment tools are necessary. Speaking of  quality means quality assurance\, quality audit and quality enhancement. In the Open Virtual Mobilty Erasmus + Project’s framework https://www.openvirtualmobility.eu/es_ES/\, the quality assurance of OER is addressed through an iterative cycle of design\, creation\, implementation\, and assessment\, following the Design Based Research model (Barab & Squire\, 2004). \nAtenas and Havemann (2014) list a series of actions to identify resources to be taken into consideration such as choose resources already valued as high quality by peers\, start a community discussion on a specific resource\, use resources where keywords and metadata are clearly identified. In order to assess  each OER to include in the VM MOOC\, partners of the IO6 developed a tool structured in three main indicators (Poce\, Agrusti & Re 2015): 1. Quality; 2. Appropriateness; 3. Technical aspects. The webinar will present best practices developed in the Erasmus + Project OpenVM to search\, select and assess OERs. In addition\, the preliminary results of the pre-pilot phase will be presented. \nAtenas\, J.\, & Havemann\, L. (2014). SUMMARY:New Global Challenges for Quality Development in Open Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Josep M. Duart\, EDEN Executive Committee Member\nFacilitators:  \n\nJosep M. Duart\nEbba Ossiannilsson\nUlf – Daniel Ehlers\n\nAlthough the MOOC-mania seems to be over and several world conferences have debated the potential of Open education and open educational resources\, it still seems that after all discussions\, debates and meetings\, we (have to) come back to the one important question: How can digital media\, learning technology\, digital learning materials help us to transform educational experiences and institutions in a way that we can provide more suitable learning scenarios to our future graduates in order to prepare them for an uncertain future. This is in the heart of the (global) quality debate. While we have discussed theses issue already at length in European contexts and communities we can now more and more see that the issue is globally important to all nations. So – it is time to allow for a moment of reflection and to see what is going on. To take stock of the big challenges\, the big global quality challenges. \nIn his presentation\, Ulf – Daniel Ehlers will try to take into account the last 10 years of quality debate and see where we still have open issues and map out the points which from my point of view are relevant to a current and future discussion agenda. He firmly believes that in the difficult economic and political climate we are currently in\, it is more important than ever to promote learning\, human and social capital development\, thus developing the knowledge society\, and strive for innovation. Digitalisation within the entire education sector is seen as a catalyst to foster the capacity to promote\, support and drive educational professionals’\, learners’ and organizations’ abilities to develop the competences they need for an ever changing and potentially uncertain future with growing risks. However\, open\, online and e-learning in Europe and globally\, as well as the concept of digitalisation in education are still not perceived with the same credibility as traditional modes of learning. Although a lot of progress has been made to bring digital technologies into the educational context in all European countries\, a renewed debate about quality on open\, online and e-learning\, sharing of good practices and trust into innovation and transformation through the use of digital technologies in education is needed today. It will help to understand how the educational experience can truly be enhanced\, how educational organizations’ capacity to do so can be developed and how policies around digital transformation can be shaped on individual\, institutional as well as national and European level. \nWatch the recording \n
