SUMMARY:Designing inclusive and engaging structures to facilitate creativity and learning
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording \nDescription\nThis talk explores three principles for inclusive innovation and describes three research and development projects through which these principles have been developed and applied. Rather than seeing the need to be accessible to all as a barrier to innovation\, innovation in educational projects can be at its most effective when the goals and processes are inclusive. \nThe projects described all aimed to create novel and inclusive systems through which people engage and learn. This is achieved through 1) Starting with the audiences who face challenges and then find opportunities to innovate for all; 2) Exploring simple\, novel ways to get people to be creative to open up new ways of thinking and participation; and 3) Considering accessibility from the beginning of the process\, to create results that are both innovative and inclusive. \nThe projects are: \n\nOut There and In Here\, which developed new forms of collaborative activities at a distance\, inspired by work to make fieldwork accessible to learners with physical disabilities;\nArtMaps\, which developed a platform for members of the public to create interpretations of the locational relevance of items in a museum collection; and\nOur Journey\, which provides a simple and engaging structure for learners to represent their study journeys.\n\nYou will meet\nTim Coughlan \nTim Coughlan is a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University\, UK. His research crosses the areas of Education and Human-Computer Interaction and is particularly focused on the design and evaluation of systems that support inclusion\, creativity\, and openness in learning. \nCurrent and recent research projects include designing tools for the representation of challenges and achievements in study journeys (Our Journey)\, improving support in online and open education for disabled students (ADMINS\, Ed-ICT\, Open Learning and Accessibility)\, and teaching community-led design practices through online courses (Empowering Design Practices). \nProfile: https://iet.open.ac.uk/people/tim.coughlan

SUMMARY:Are Automatic Transcriptions Good Enough for Accessibility?
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nIn this webinar Dr Tharindu Liyanagunawardena will talk about her research\, Automatic Transcription Software: Good Enough for Accessibility? A case study from built environment education\, which was awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the 28th EDEN annual conference\, Bruges\, Belgium 16-19 June 2019. \nThe increasing use of multimedia in learning resources in higher education poses a challenge for learners with hearing disabilities\, unless these are accompanied by transcripts or captions. Accessibility has gained centre stage in the UK recently with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018\, enforcement of EU directive on accessibility becoming the law. \nThis paper reports on a small study where six Automatic Transcription Software (ATS) were analysed for their accuracy. If you are interested in accessibility\, practical uses of available technologies and how they make a difference to students’ learning this will be a useful session for you. \nQuestions to consider\n\nHow effective are current ATS providers?\nCould transcripts have other benefits for students?\nAre we considering ‘accessibility’ broadly enough?\n\nYou will meet\nTharindu Liyanagunawardena \nLearning Technology Researcher and the Chair of the Online Learning Research Centre at the University College of Estate Management\, United Kingdom. SUMMARY:Quality in e-learning
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nThe rise of open online learning and e-learning poses more than ever quality-relevant questions. The development where learners take personal responsibility for their own learning is only one of the issues when quality is discussed\, another problem is when quality is expressed as norm-based versus process-based. \nIn view of the global challenges associated with education\, there is an urgent need to redefine quality issues. The quality of e-learning is a constant debate and discussion. Quality in this respect is complex and can either be easily defined or must be elaborated to a high and deep degree. There may be more questions than answers. First\, the five most frequently asked questions have to be answered. What do we mean by quality? Why is it important? Who’s involved? Quality for whom? When should quality be measured? In addition\, the quality can be seen at various levels: nano\, micro\, meso\, macro. \nThe webinar will address the current discourse and quality issues in open flexible online learning\, including e-learning. \nYou will meet\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson \n\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson is an independent researcher\, expert\, quality assessor and influencer in the fields of open online flexible\, distance learning\, including e-learning TEL\, OER and MOOCs. SUMMARY:Widening access to open education - the way forward. What the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us
DESCRIPTION:Widening access to open education – the way forward\nWhat the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us\nwebinar Recording \nDescription\nThe ideas and practices that underlie open education have been around for a very long time. Given the promise of such a democratic approach to teaching and learning it is perhaps surprising that it is not more widely used. When Massive Online Open Courses (or MOOCs) appeared on the public radar around 2012 they looked a game-changer\, something that could\, once and for all\, change the role of open education and its importance in the educational landscape. However\, seven years later\, while there is a wide range of these courses available\, little change has taken place in the widespread adoption of open education. \nAs a result of the research undertaken in the MOONLITE project\, and different and varied interchanges of ideas\, debates\, and collaborations with other academics and experts in the field of open education and social inclusion\, it has been possible to identify seven key challenges\, that we believe still need to be addressed to take open education to the next level. Namely: \n\nimproving access to MOOCs and open education;\nkeeping MOOCs open and free;\nthe need for support in inclusive MOOCs;\ndesigning and developing MOOCs for social inclusion;\nthe recognition of prior learning and MOOC certification;\nthe need for open education policies at national and international levels;\nnew funding and business models.\n\nIn this webinar we will present and discuss these challenges and consider how to widen access to open education. \nQuestions to consider\n\nIf education is a basic human right then why is so much knowledge / educational content locked away in not-for-free sources?\nOpen education\, in the sense of resources and practices\, seems to offer a solution to the access problem. So why is it not more widely used or appreciated?\nAre MOOCs the educational panacea they were once thought to be\, or just another step on the evolutionary ladder toward next-generation teaching and learning\, being inevitably forgotten and overlooked with time?\n\nParticipation and privacy\nThis webinar will feature small group discussions so please make sure you have a web camera and headset activated before you join the meeting. The main part of the webinar will be recorded but not the group discussions. Your name will not be visible in the recording\, neither will the chat session. \nYou will meet\nTimothy Read is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED\, Spain. SUMMARY:Possible use of a portfolio as European Development
DESCRIPTION:“Possible use of a portfolio as European Development” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 5 June 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Alfredo Soeiro\, Deputy Chair of the NAP Steering Committee\, from the University of Porto\, Portugal in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nWatch the recording \nE-portfolios can be understood as a digital dynamic tool that enables individuals to document\, display and manage their skills\, qualifications and experience throughout the lifespan of their career. e-portfolios help individuals be reflective\, support their personal development\, allow them to showcase their skills\, qualifications and experience\, and enable (self-) assessment of their skills. The new Europass framework adopted the approach of web-based tools to support individuals in documenting and describing their competences and qualifications acquired through learning and non-formal and informal learning. The Europass e-portfolio may build on the current Europass Online. Users may use the Europass e-portfolio to document and describe their personal information\, and to manage careers and lifelong learning. The use of this tool should be discussed and analyzed\, therefore participate and debate. \n\nAlfredo Soeiro\n\nDegrees in Civil Engineering (U. Porto\, 76) and (U. SUMMARY:Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case
DESCRIPTION:The “Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 3 April 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Francesca Amenduni from the University of Foggia and Roma TRE University\, Italy in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nRegister for the webinar \nIn the context of Open Education\, quality assessment tools are necessary. Speaking of  quality means quality assurance\, quality audit and quality enhancement. In the Open Virtual Mobilty Erasmus + Project’s framework https://www.openvirtualmobility.eu/es_ES/\, the quality assurance of OER is addressed through an iterative cycle of design\, creation\, implementation\, and assessment\, following the Design Based Research model (Barab & Squire\, 2004). \nAtenas and Havemann (2014) list a series of actions to identify resources to be taken into consideration such as choose resources already valued as high quality by peers\, start a community discussion on a specific resource\, use resources where keywords and metadata are clearly identified. In order to assess  each OER to include in the VM MOOC\, partners of the IO6 developed a tool structured in three main indicators (Poce\, Agrusti & Re 2015): 1. Quality; 2. Appropriateness; 3. Technical aspects. The webinar will present best practices developed in the Erasmus + Project OpenVM to search\, select and assess OERs. In addition\, the preliminary results of the pre-pilot phase will be presented. \nAtenas\, J.\, & Havemann\, L. (2014). SUMMARY:Evaluation in distance education @ VIVES: some tools and trends
DESCRIPTION:The “Evaluation in distance education @ VIVES: some tools and trends” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 20 March 2019 at 15:30 CET with Koen Verhulst and Hendrik Coucke from VIVES University of Applied Sciences\, Belgium in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nWatch the recording \nWith approximately 13 000 students\, VIVES is one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Flanders\, Belgium. VIVES has been the leader in Flanders when it comes to distance learning for more than 20 years. The university offers 13 programmes and more than 20 specializations through distance learning. In all\, more than 2 000 students follow a distance-learning programme to obtain their bachelor’s degree. \nMost of the students in distance education combine their studies with work and care for their family. To facilitate their study\, VIVES has chosen to implement\, among other things\, different assessment and organisation tools. During this session\, different tools in order to enhance the flexibility for the students concerning evaluation and assessment will be presented. \n\nHendrik Coucke started at VIVES as a lecturer mathematics in 2004 in teacher training for the bachelor primary education program. Besides teaching\, he is also an educational technologist to support teachers in the use of educational technology in their teaching practice. He is currently part of the VIVES Educational Technology team\, part of the Department of Educational Policy\, which gives concrete form to the vision on educational technology for the entire university of applied sciences. From the latter position he started to specialise himself more and more in digital tools\, including specifically the Edumatic assessment tool\, which has now become assessmentQ. \nKoen Verhulst is working at VIVES since 2000\, originally as a teacher ICT and multimedia in teacher training for the bachelor primary education program. He has been working at the Education Policy Department since 2014. The goal in 2014 was to increase the flexibility for distance learning students by establishing the examination centre\, together with the development of square and implementing ProctorExam as a tool for remote examinations. His role in this was mainly to design and develop the square tool. Today he is responsible for the management of square\, in addition to the management of a number of other tools.

SUMMARY:New Global Challenges for Quality Development in Open Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Josep M. Duart\, EDEN Executive Committee Member\nFacilitators:  \n\nJosep M. Duart\nEbba Ossiannilsson\nUlf – Daniel Ehlers\n\nAlthough the MOOC-mania seems to be over and several world conferences have debated the potential of Open education and open educational resources\, it still seems that after all discussions\, debates and meetings\, we (have to) come back to the one important question: How can digital media\, learning technology\, digital learning materials help us to transform educational experiences and institutions in a way that we can provide more suitable learning scenarios to our future graduates in order to prepare them for an uncertain future. This is in the heart of the (global) quality debate. While we have discussed theses issue already at length in European contexts and communities we can now more and more see that the issue is globally important to all nations. So – it is time to allow for a moment of reflection and to see what is going on. To take stock of the big challenges\, the big global quality challenges. \nIn his presentation\, Ulf – Daniel Ehlers will try to take into account the last 10 years of quality debate and see where we still have open issues and map out the points which from my point of view are relevant to a current and future discussion agenda. He firmly believes that in the difficult economic and political climate we are currently in\, it is more important than ever to promote learning\, human and social capital development\, thus developing the knowledge society\, and strive for innovation. Digitalisation within the entire education sector is seen as a catalyst to foster the capacity to promote\, support and drive educational professionals’\, learners’ and organizations’ abilities to develop the competences they need for an ever changing and potentially uncertain future with growing risks. However\, open\, online and e-learning in Europe and globally\, as well as the concept of digitalisation in education are still not perceived with the same credibility as traditional modes of learning. Although a lot of progress has been made to bring digital technologies into the educational context in all European countries\, a renewed debate about quality on open\, online and e-learning\, sharing of good practices and trust into innovation and transformation through the use of digital technologies in education is needed today. It will help to understand how the educational experience can truly be enhanced\, how educational organizations’ capacity to do so can be developed and how policies around digital transformation can be shaped on individual\, institutional as well as national and European level. \nWatch the recording \n

SUMMARY:Quality In TEL On Micro\, Meso And Macro Level\, And Who Are The Stakeholders. Why And How Do They Have An Interest?
DESCRIPTION:Quality in TEL\, in the digital transformation can be considered\, discussed\, and even measured from a variety of perspectives and approaches. First\, quality has to be considered at different levels\, i.e. micro-level\, meso-level and macro-level. Second\, there are different approaches\, as accreditation\, certification\, benchmarking\, and or guidelines or  frame of references. Several stakeholders  have an interest in quality. Most often the stakeholders are considered as the learners\, the academics\, the institution\, and even on country level or international level. In addition\, maturity level has to be taken into consideration\, and also if quality is considered as norm based or process based.\nThe facilitators for this webinar will introduce the theme\, and different scenarios will be pointed out for an interesting discussion on how quality in TEL will be  a driver for the digital transformation  for learning and education. \nModerated by Ebba Ossiannilsson\, EDEN Executive Committee Member \nFacilitators:  \n\nEbba Ossiannilsson\, EDEN EC\, The Swedish Association for Distance Education\, Sweden\nMark Nichols\, EDEN EC\, Open University\, United Kingdom\nAirina Volungeviciene\,  EDEN President\, Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania\n\nPlease join our discussion and contribute to the discussion on Quality in TEL \nWatch the recording

SUMMARY:The power of silent learners in a group
DESCRIPTION:When: 15 March 2017\, 15:00 – 16:00 CET\nWhere: Online via Adobe Connect (link to the meeting room will be sent to all registered participants 1-2 days before the webinar)\n\nThe recording of the webinar can be accessed here.\n\n How do we recognize silent learners?\n What are the needs of silent learners?\n How can we empower silent learners in a group context?\n\nThere are silent learners\, there are noisy learners\, and some are in between. Some learners are very fast and enthusiastic but become very quickly disillusioned\, whilst others start slowly\, think more without expressing themselves aloud but when they do open their mouths\, everyone listens.\n\nWe may sometimes believe that silent learners are not interested\, difficult to communicate with or maybe even lazy. But maybe we have to delay our judgement. In some countries introverts are considered as “normal” whilst extroverts are the ones with a problem.\n\nWhat happens when silent learners have to learn in groups? Can we help the group to understand the silent learner? Can we make the silent learner proud and more secure about her/his function in the collaboration process? Could we also encourage solitary learning in the group?\n\nJoin us to discuss these issues!\nPlease watch this short film before the webinar:\nSusan Cain: The power of introverts (TED 2012)\nYou will meet\nFrancisca Frenks\nIndependent expert in webinars and online learning and online collaboration at XWebinar.nl. Online facilitator for PBL-group9 of the Open Networked Learning project.\n\nE-mail: francisca@xwebinar.nl\n\nTwitter: @FranciscaF\n\nBlog: https://www.xwebinar.nl/blog/\nAlastair Creelman\nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. SUMMARY:Critical thinking and technology
DESCRIPTION:Resources\nThe recording of the webinar can be accessed here\, the webinar slides can be viewed on SlideShare.\n\nWhat is the webinar about and why should you participate?\n\nThere are social and cultural reasons which draw attention to critical thinking skills\, meant as essential drivers of creativity and innovation.\n\nDifferent documents recently issued by the European Commission highlight the main consequences of the economic crises on the population welfare. In particular\, a high risk of long term exclusion from labour market and society is denounced.\n\nThe key point is in fact that new skills are needed\, because traditional skills learnt at school and/or at university are partially losing their relevance as they do not seem to be applicable when the new work forces are facing nowadays’ demand for innovation and growth.\n\nWe have been developing different projects on the subject in our Department at University Roma Tre. The idea behind the project we are presenting here is therefore that of verifying the effectiveness of a model built to increase critical thinking skills through technology.\n\nWhat questions will be discussed?\n\n Could you define critical thinking?\n Do you consider it a mandatory 21st century skill?\n Do you think CT can be taught?\n If yes do you have experience in that?\n Can you tell us more?\n According to your experience\, can you see a role for TECHED to foster such abilities? Give a reason for yes or no.\n Which learning pedagogy carried out online could be more effective for CT development?\n Do you know about initiatives/projects regarding CT development on line?\n Do you consider this experience replicable in your setting?\n Do you have similar experiences to discuss?\n How do you think results can be improved?\n\nWho will you meet?\n\n\n\n\nAntonella Poce \n\n\nMaria Rosaria Re \n\n\nFrancesco Agrusti \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n
