At The Open University\, we now have a unique combination of evidence\, expertise\, and emerging tools that allow us to rethink assessment in a way that is pedagogically grounded\, student‑centred\, and institutionally coherent. This webinar brings together three complementary strands of OU work to help us understand where assessment is heading and how we can respond strategically. \n\n\n\nFirst\, we will explore longitudinal evidence from OU students\, drawing on several years of comprehensive survey data that reveal how learners experience assessment\, how they feel about being more engaged and involved in the assessment process\, and their use of AI for assessment writing\, feedback and support. These insights enable us to identify and anticipate opportunities for improved assessment design and support. \n\n\n\nSecondly\, drawing on concrete examples from different curriculum areas\, we will demonstrate what assessment looks like that is informed by the OU’s framework for Critical AI Literacy Skills development\, i.e. AI Literacy which is grounded in equity\, diversity\, inclusion and access principles. \n\n\n\nFinally\, building on the evidence about student experiences and the OU’s pedagogical framing of AI\, we turn to practical tools that support course authors in rethinking assessment design. SCRIBE\, the OU’s AI-supported authoring assistant\, offers a growing suite of specialist assistants to help academics work through assessment decisions collaboratively and efficiently. These include assistants for generating diagnostic quiz questions with formative feedback\, sketching VLE-based learning activities aligned to different pedagogical purposes\, drafting assessment rubrics\, and mapping tasks to learning outcomes. In this segment\, we demonstrate how these assistants work\, not as replacements for educator judgment\, but as thinking partners that help course teams translate institutional priorities and student needs into well-designed\, authentic assessments. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these perspectives offer a coherent\, evidence‑based view of how the OU can evolve its assessment practices in a way that supports students\, empowers educators\, and aligns with our mission of widening participation. \n\n\n\nThe session will be chaired by Denise Whitelock\, who has spent her career developing AI systems for Teaching and Learning. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these presentations offer a timely and practical view of how human–AI partnerships are reshaping assessment while stressing the roles of trust\, transparency\, and institutional purpose. \n\n\n\nFormat: Presentations and discussion with participants \n\n\n\nModerator: Professor Denise Whitelock\, Institute of Educational Technology at the Open  University\, UK\, EDEN DLE Vice-president \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Denise Whitelock\, Institute of Educational Technology at the Open  University\, UK\, EDEN DLE Vice-president \n\n\n\nDr Denise Whitelock is the Artificial Intelligence Lead at the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) at The Open University\, following a six-year tenure as its Director. Writing systems worldwide face increasing risks due to social change\, declining intergenerational transmission\, and limited access to learning resources. Addressing these challenges requires approaches that move beyond documentation alone to support living practices. \n\n\n\nThe session combines presentations and discussion to bring together perspectives on endangered writing systems at both global and local scales. It opens with a brief introduction to endangered and minority writing systems worldwide\, highlighting their broad range of structural and cultural features\, the diverse contexts in which they are used\, and the challenges involved in their transmission and survival. It will also consider opportunities for revitalisation through digital tools and open educational initiatives. It situates the Naxi Dongba script within the broader landscape of endangered writing systems worldwide\, illustrating how a specific tradition reflects shared challenges while also presenting distinctive characteristics. \n\n\n\nParticular attention is given to the Dongba script and Naxi cultural context\, including the script’s graphic features\, its close relationship with ritual and cultural knowledge\, and the challenges posed by variation\, transmission\, and partial standardisation. This case study serves not merely as an isolated example but as a lens through which wider issues of script endangerment\, revitalisation\, and digital representation can be examined. \n\n\n\nThe webinar then focuses on MOOCs as a methodological approach to preservation and revitalisation. Rather than treating online courses solely as dissemination tools\, the session examines how open digital learning environments can function as infrastructures for transmission\, enabling sustained engagement between learners\, cultural knowledge holders\, and research communities. Drawing on empirical experience\, the webinar highlights how MOOCs can support participatory learning\, community formation\, and the transition from learning communities to research and practice communities. \n\n\n\nFinally\, the discussion addresses the role of digital tools\, including AI\, in endangered script work. The focus is on concrete applications\, limitations\, and ethical considerations\, including questions of authority\, ownership\, and long-term sustainability. \n\n\n\nFormat: Presentations and discussion with participants \n\n\n\nModerator: Sandra Kučina Softić\, University of Zagreb\, University Computing Centre SRCE\, EDEN Senior Fellow \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Sandra Kučina Softić is the vice president of EDEN Digital Learning Europe\, Assistant Director at the University of Zagreb University Computing Centre (Croatia) and Head of the E-learning Centre. SUMMARY:Open Education Week 2023 - "What Is the Future of Open Education?"
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nIn this panel session with policymakers and experts on open\, online and distance education we will reflect on the present situation regarding open education. Open education is a philosophy\, a way of carrying out education with the aim to widen access and participation to everyone by removing barriers and making learning accessible\, abundant\, and customisable for all. Open education is becoming ever more important in European higher education and on the global level as well due to the fact that digital technologies are one of the main driving forces behind education modernisation. So\, why do we still need to discuss the benefits of open education? How pandemic\, AI developments (especially chat GPT) and all other issues in the context of open education affected open education in a good or poor way? How can we make open education more visible and actual and did it become mainstream? We do have numerous examples of best practices\, great projects on open education\, initiatives\, documents and policies. Nevertheless\, numerous teachers are still unaware of open educational resources and open educational practices and educational institutions do not implement the principles of openness in education or research. \n\n\n\nTo give you food for thought some of the panellists shared their views on open education in statements: \n\n\n\n\nJosep M. Duart: “Open education is a way of understanding education; to me\, it is the only one possible. Education is about sharing learning\, feelings\, experiences\, paths\, etc. Technology increases the power of Open Education by creating a global space of exchange and openness. Challenges and opportunities exist\, and the educators’ task is to interpret them in their context”.\n\n\n\nMark Brown: “Open Education is a popular catechism which suffers from many different interpretations. A deeper more transformative conception of openness that contributes to real changes in educational practices continues to depend on how successful we are in fundamentally challenging traditional closed beliefs\, policies and cultures”.\n\n\n\nJames Glapa-Grossklag: “Open education is not an end goal in itself\, rather open education provides a set of tools to accomplish larger goals\, such as increasing graduation rates and promoting student belonging”.\n\n\n\nAndreia Inamorato Dos Santos: “Open education practices need to be connected to social challenges to remain relevant and in the spotlight for policymakers. There is a need to update the discourse on open education\, as well as unpack the various ramifications and principles of open education in fields such as artificial intelligence\, digital competence\, inclusion\, equity\, and social justice”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nSandra Kučina Softić\, University of Zagreb University Computing Centre\, Croatia\, EDEN Digital Learning Europe MB Member\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra Kučina Softić is the Assistant Director at the University of Zagreb University Computing Centre SRCE (Croatia). SUMMARY:Opening up Museums: how inclusive open education is transforming the museum experience
DESCRIPTION:Experts panel\nEither as a response to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis or a strategic move towards a more participatory culture\, most museums worldwide are now providing open access online to a large amount of their curated digital heritage content. In order to promote collaboration and learning through co-creation\, many opened up their online collections to social tagging\, or started working with communities of volunteers to transcribe manuscript archives for digital publishing projects. Some others started crowdsourcing and crowdfunding initiatives. In this new context\, Museum MOOCs and OERs have become popular tools and are now used in formal and non formal learning contexts as well as for professional development. As the learning experience becomes increasingly open\, hybrid\, ubiquitous and personalized\, museum education comes to be more engaging\, participatory and transformative\, as well as more accessible and inclusive. \nIn this webinar a panel of expert researchers will discuss how open education is contributing to the digital transformation of the museum learning experience. They will show how open education is being embraced by museum educators and explain why that is helping to address inclusion for all\, but also widening participation\, developing critical thinking\, fostering digital citizenship\, and promoting wellbeing. Speakers will share best practices and present significant experiences from such projects as INCLUSIVE MEMORY\, MUSACCES and SPEKTRUM. \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Democratizing research and science: Ways forward
DESCRIPTION:Presentations and panel discussion\nIn this session\, we will reflect on how research  and science are currently produced and discuss ways we could make them more inclusive\, open\, and democratic. In the first talk\, Dr  Jess Carr will talk about participatory and inclusive research with excluded communities. In the second talk\, Dr Christothea Herodotou will talk about how technology can support democratic research by allowing non-professionals to set up their own studies. In the third talk\, Prof Bart Rienties will discuss about open science and scholarship in relation to learning analytics\, inviting attendees’ to share their thoughts and perspectives. \nTalk 1 Dr Jess Carr \nTitle: What makes a researcher? Doing participatory inclusive research with excluded communities \nAbstract: To an outsider\, research and higher education institutions can seem ‘elitist’. Yet as funders look to include more communities in research\, our practice must change. So how do we engage with communities that are frequently excluded\, and break down the barriers put up by researchers who came before us? This talk will explore inclusive research\, and its participatory approaches in engaging adults with learning disabilities as co-researchers. \n\nTalk 2 Dr. Christothea Herodotou \nTitle: Opening research to non-professionals through community-led citizen science \nAbstract: A means of democratising research is to enable communities and individuals with no or limited science expertise to design their own scientific investigations\, grounded on their needs and requirements. The award-winning nQuire platform (nquire.org.uk) has been designed with support from the OU/BBC partnership\, to scaffold the process of setting up and managing scientific investigations and enable community-led citizen science. It has engaged 230K+ people with research. Two mechanisms support participants in taking control of the research process: an authoring tool and collaboration with scientists. A survey of 150 participants of nQuire identified challenges related to people initiating their own studies such as a lack of time and the need for support\, that researchers should tackle if it is to open science to all.  Implications for the design of community-led citizen science will be discussed. \n\nTalk 3 Prof Bart Rienties \nTitle: Building Open Science and Scholarship in learning analytics: some preliminary thoughts \nAbstract: On 21 March the Society of Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) will bring together some leading thinkers in learning analytics and data science to discuss how open science and scholarship can be incorporated into learning analytics culture and practice. Practitioners and researchers from across the world are invited to share their thoughts and perspectives. At EDEN on the 8th of March we are keen to explore your perspectives on open science and scholarship\, in particular with relation to learning analytics. Amongst the questions to be discussed are: What could and should EDEN and SoLAR do to encourage open science and scholarship?; What prevents researchers from contributing to open science?; Which learning analytics approaches could (not) be made open\, and why?; And what could organisations like SoLAR and EDEN do to make open science and scholarship more attractive and relevant? \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Yes it's Open but is it any Good? Reflections on an Open Reading Initiative of Scholarly Research
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion\nThis webinar focuses on the growth of open science and the plethora of open access scholarly publications in the area of digital education—for better and worse. It begins by reflecting on the 6th edition of the NIDL “top 10” good reads in the field of digital education. This exercise identifies a collection of scholarly open access articles published over the previous year that make a valuable contribution to the literature. A panel discussion then considers the challenge of finding time to “slow” read the literature and shares critical strategies for keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving literature. We ask what should you be reading? What was your top read from 2021? How do you filter the literature to ascertain whether a publication or journal article is worth reading? How much time do you spend ‘slow’ reading the literature each month and is this long enough? Just how “good” is the open-access literature? \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Role of the openness in shaping of the post-pandemic education (Role of international associations)
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPanel discussion\nDescription:We are facing the biggest disruption of education in history caused by the global health pandemic and it is more important than ever to ensure access to education. As schools closed\, over a billion of students have been hampered from learning in the way they used to\, and inequalities in access to education have become even more evident. If we take the position that education is common good and should be reachable and available to all\, it is our obligation to join efforts and work in this direction. Open Educational Resources (OER) can help in achieving inclusive education aiming to ensure that learners with diverse needs and preferences (such as those with disabilities) have equal opportunities in accessing learning resources\, services\, and learning experience in general. The Open Education movement is evolving\, and besides creating and publishing OERs\, focus is shifting to Open Education Practices that can be implemented using OER. It is evident that the Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a paradigm shift in how learners of all ages\, worldwide\, can access learning. It is\, therefore essential\, more than ever that the global community come together now to foster universal access to information and knowledge through OER. In this session\, we plan to discuss what actions and approaches could be taken by international associations and communities to contribute to this goal.Questions that will be discussed: \n\nWhy is openness in education and research still an issue?\nHow can collaboration and exchange of experience contribute to expanded understanding of benefits of open education?\nHow to foster OERs to support learners and educational professionals in online learning? What experiences and initiatives have there been so far?\nHow can the visibility of best practices be ensured?\nHow can the adoption of OEP in higher education be obtained?\nDoes the application of OER and OEP vary depending on the educational level (pre-school to adult education)?\nHas the demand for MOOCs and short non-degree courses changed during pandemic?\n\nModerator:Ebba OssiannilssonProfessor\, Dr.\, EDEN EC\, EDEN Fellow\, EDEN SIG TEL QESwedenProfessor\, Dr. Ebba Ossiannilsson is a Consultant\, Expert\, Influencer and Quality Assessor in the field of open\, flexible\, online\, and distance learning\, is an advocate and promotes and improves open and online learning in the context of SDG4\, and Futures of education. SUMMARY:Insights from an internationally co-developed MOOC on digital citizenship
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nWebinar\nDescription:Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project\, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed\, with the rationale that\, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe\, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs\, that are designed and developed by a single professor\, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience\, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived\, designed\, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries. The webinar will reflect on this experience\, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC\, while being less effective from a production point of view. The underlying question of the webinar will be: can a break-even point between international co-production and effectiveness be found within MOOCs? \nModerator:Timothy ReadEDEN Vice-President for Open Professional CollaborationSenior Lecturer in Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia\, Madrid\, SpainTimothy Read is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED. SUMMARY:Unboxing the Textbook for an Open World
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentation \nPresentation & panel discussion\nDescription: \nThe textbook is an enduring staple of higher education\, occupying a key role in formal educational settings. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover\, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large\, often expensive\, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover\, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley\, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? To help “unbox” the book\, this panel seeks to explore students’ use (and non-use) of textbooks for learning in higher education; what alternatives might exist; and to try and envisage textbooks and educational resources in a more open future. \nReferences: \nWiley\, D. SUMMARY:Open Education Recognition and Credentials
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nFor flexible\, open and online education to become reality\, it is vital to increase trust in recognition and credentials through robust and reliable solutions. In Europe\, we already have standards and tools that can be used to transparently describe qualifications. The European Qualifications Framework gives an indication of the level of various qualifications; the European Diploma Supplement provides a standardised template to give additional information about a degree; the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows for individual learning units to be described in terms of knowledge\, skills\, responsibility and autonomy; the European Skill\, Competences\, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) database provides a standard terminology. However\, while theoretically these same tools could be used to describe virtual mobility and open education\, there is a long way to go until open education modules are treated the same way as their traditional counterparts. \nThis webinar will provide a deeper analysis of this challenge and introduce a few European initiatives\, such as the new Europass\, MicroHE\, ECCOE and more\, that aim to facilitate the recognition of open\, online and flexible higher education and increase trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. \nModerator: Deborah Arnold\, AUNEGe\, EDEN Senior Fellow \nPresenters: \nDeborah Arnold\nNational and International Projects Coordinator\, AUNEGe\, France \n  \nFormerly Digital Strategy and Communication Officer in the Directorate for Digital Affairs at the University of Burgundy\, and Manager of the Learning Technology and Distance Education unit\, Deborah has nearly 20 years’ experience in European projects. SUMMARY:Open Education for Civil Engagement and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nOpen education has a key role to play in potentiating social inclusion. As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity\, freedom\, democracy\, equality\, the rule of law\, respect for human rights\, the rights of minorities. However\, as also noted\, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion\, namely: populism\, xenophobia\, divisive nationalism\, discrimination\, misinformation\, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism). \nIn order to counter these problems\, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However\, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need\, therefore\, to teach and support students\, especially the younger generations\, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In this webinar different aspects and examples of the role of open educational resources and practices for citizenship education will be considered and how they can be potentiated in the future. \nModerator: Timothy Read\, UNED\, EDEN Vice-president \nPresenters: \nAlfredo Soeiro\nEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,\nUniversity of Porto\, Portugal \nDegrees in Civil Engineering (U.
