DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion\nThis webinar focuses on the growth of open science and the plethora of open access scholarly publications in the area of digital education—for better and worse. It begins by reflecting on the 6th edition of the NIDL “top 10” good reads in the field of digital education. This exercise identifies a collection of scholarly open access articles published over the previous year that make a valuable contribution to the literature. A panel discussion then considers the challenge of finding time to “slow” read the literature and shares critical strategies for keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving literature. We ask what should you be reading? What was your top read from 2021? How do you filter the literature to ascertain whether a publication or journal article is worth reading? It begins by sharing some “good reads” published over the past year and then discusses key lessons\, tensions and takeaways emerging from a rich colour pallet of openly available literature in the field of open\, online and digital education. Moderator:Mark BrownMark Brown is Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). He is both a Fellow and Executive Committee member of EDEN and also serves on the Supervisory Board of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU). Additionally\, Mark is an Executive Committee member of the Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA) which publishes the Q1 journal Distance Education. He serves on several journal editorial boards and coordinates the NIDL’s annual list of top 10 open access publications selected each year over the past 5-years. In 2017\, Mark was recognised by the Commonwealth of Learning as a world leader in the area of Open\, Online and Digital Education.Presenters:Mairead Nic Giolla Mhichil Dr. Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichíl is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow\, with the National Institute of Digital Learning in Dublin City University\, researching digital innovation and implementation in higher education. Mairéad is the institutional lead on micro-credentials and has conducted the first national micro-credential survey of employers and employees in Ireland. She serves on a national steering committee to develop and implement a national approach to the development and delivery of micro-credentials with other sectoral stakeholders. She is a Fulbright Scholar with the University of Notre Dame in the USA and lectures in Information Technology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in DCU. Mairéad has spent time working for national and international organisations in financial\, computing and consulting positions including extensive involvement in tech start-ups. Mairéad is involved in a number of European research projects as both PI and researcher. Mairéad is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education (ETHE) and on the board of ALT-J and is an active reviewer for a number of journals. \n\nWim Van Petegem Dr. Wim Van Petegem is Director of AVNet\, a central support unit at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\, Belgium. He is an EDEN Senior Fellow\, member of the board of the EDEN Fellows Council\, and former EDEN Vice-President for Research.  At the start of 2021 Wim began as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Open\, Distance and eLearning. DESCRIPTION:With the EDEN Open Education Week\, Virtual events 2021 having come to an end\, EDEN wishes to thank all the participants\, moderators\, panelists\, organisers and partner institutions for supporting us in hosting an incredibly insightful and significant online event series\, for the sixth year already. The online webinar series organised by EDEN arching through five days (March 1–5) was a great opportunity to reflect on changes and achievements influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and to enhance the possibilities of online and distance learning in the hopefully not so distant “new normal”. Participants had access to daily online webinars and panel sessions of expert scholars and practitioners who presented a variety of cutting edge open and online learning topics\, from innovations in design to open educational research. Achilles serves as Chair of the Board of ALL DIGITAL European network and member of the ESCO Reference Group on ICT Services\, the CEN PC428 on e-competences and ICT professionalism\, the CEPIS IT Professionalism in Europe\, the EADTU Course & Curriculum pool of experts\, the ELOT Standardization Committee on Smart Cities\, the National Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition and the ReBrain Greece initiative. He has participated in more than 70 EU and national R&D projects (coordinated more than 10 of them)\, has published more than 200 scientific articles\, co-authored more than 10 books and received more than 2000 citations. Achilles has been teaching formal and non-formal courses on ICT topics for over 25 years\, pioneering the development of several MOOCs and blended courses on digital skills. SUMMARY:Supporting teaching and learning in schools through OER: Lessons from the pandemic

SUMMARY:Insights from an internationally co-developed MOOC on digital citizenship
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nWebinar\nDescription:Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project\, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed\, with the rationale that\, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe\, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs\, that are designed and developed by a single professor\, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience\, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived\, designed\, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries. The webinar will reflect on this experience\, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC\, while being less effective from a production point of view. The underlying question of the webinar will be: can a break-even point between international co-production and effectiveness be found within MOOCs? \nModerator:Timothy ReadEDEN Vice-President for Open Professional CollaborationSenior Lecturer in Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia\, Madrid\, SpainTimothy Read is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover\, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large\, often expensive\, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover\, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley\, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity\, freedom\, democracy\, equality\, the rule of law\, respect for human rights\, the rights of minorities. However\, as also noted\, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion\, namely: populism\, xenophobia\, divisive nationalism\, discrimination\, misinformation\, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism). \nIn order to counter these problems\, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However\, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need\, therefore\, to teach and support students\, especially the younger generations\, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In Europe\, we already have standards and tools that can be used to transparently describe qualifications. The European Qualifications Framework gives an indication of the level of various qualifications; the European Diploma Supplement provides a standardised template to give additional information about a degree; the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows for individual learning units to be described in terms of knowledge\, skills\, responsibility and autonomy; the European Skill\, Competences\, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) database provides a standard terminology. The second question is aimed to reflect back on some of the major challenges that the Open University model has experienced in recent times and what changes have taken place. Following on from this question the final question looks ahead to some of the issues facing the Open University in modern times and what role they should play in the future. SUMMARY:Open Education Week 2019
DESCRIPTION:Open Education Week is a celebration of the global Open Education Movement. Its goal is to raise awareness about the movement and its impact on teaching and learning worldwide\, the free and open educational opportunities that exist for everyone\, everywhere\, right now. \nWith the success of previous years’ Open Education Weeks in the background\, EDEN once again organised a very successful online event this March. The high online attendance and exceptional webinar sessions were truly inspiring to experience. \nThis year 5 webinars with 370 registered participants were held. The participants came from 38 different countries including 16 countries from outside Europe from Canada to Argentina\, from South Africa to Australia\, encompassing all continents and demonstrating a strong geographical coverage and a substantial outreach. \nAltogether 28 facilitators contributed to the successful implementation of the ambitious programme\, among them representatives of UNESCO\, ICDE and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. EDEN thanks the valuable contribution of the facilitators and trusts that the initiative contributed to the European dialogue about the state and the future of Open Education. \nAll participants and facilitators received EDEN open badges for their contribution. Most recent developments are facilitated by computers and the internet. This webinar considers the current developments in e-authentication and in supporting academic integrity within the context of experience. It will include details of the European Commission funded Adaptive Trust-based e-assessment System for Learning\, TeSLA\, project and two other projects: OpenMentor and OpenEssayist.Chris is a lecturer at the Open University’s Institute of Educational Technology\, where he chairs the masters module Openness and innovation in eLearning\, has programme responsibilities for the Masters in Online and Distance Education\, is a researcher on TeSLA and a data wrangler for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.\n\nDescription: \nAcademic institutions often define academic integrity as intellectual honesty within academic work that is devoid of plagiarism\, fabrication and dishonesty. It should be present in all types of educational settings.  Although plagiarism is not a new phenomenon it has become a greater concern lately especially in connection with online education. Questions like “is online learning creating new opportunities for plagiarism” or “how to prevent online students to use online resources without properly quoting or citing them” are becoming more present. The number of software for plagiarism detection is increasing and they are often looked at as the solution. Educational institutions\, especially universities are faced with the challenge of how to solve and prevent the issue of plagiarism and to make academic integrity a highly valued standard in the academic world again.
