SUMMARY:Supporting teaching and learning in schools through OER: Lessons from the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription:As a result of the impact of Covid-19\, schools across Europe and the world had to close for long periods. Learning activities had to be conducted remotely. The massive transition of the European school system to online learning was facilitated by the large number of open educational resources available on the internet. OERs and MOOCs could be found in dedicated aggregator portals\, institutional repositories curated by universities\, foundations and public agencies or through individual recommendations by peers. Teachers were advised to actively search\, use and share them.In the webinar a number of experts\, representing the European Commission\, Unesco\, universities\, NGOs and the school system\, will discuss how OER use and reuse has expanded during the pandemic and how this has contributed to support the quality of teaching and learning during these challenging times. He was Pro-rector for innovation in Distance Learning at Universidade Aberta (2006-09) and Director of the Department of Education and Distance Learning (2016-20). He was also President of EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network (2013-16). From 2007 to 2009\, he was a member of the Academic and Administration boards of the Asia’s International Open University (UAIA) and of the Portuguese Rectors Council (CRUP) specialized committees on Scientific Research and Knowledge Transfer\, and Evaluation\, Quality and Innovation. He’s currently an external expert for A3ES\, AQU Catalunya and ACPUA quality assurance agencies in Portugal and Spain\, as well as the research and innovation national agency of Uruguay (ANII) among others. Abby is thrilled to be leading Curriki in this next wave of innovation and growth. \n\nAndreia Inamorato dos SantosScientific Officer\, DG Joint Research Centre (JRC)\, European Commission\, Seville\, SpainDr. Andreia Inamorato dos Santos joined the JRC in September 2013. Her role involves research and policy support on ‘ICT for Learning\, Skills and Open Educational Resources (OER)’. Her work contributes to finding opportunities and challenges of ICT and OER implementation at a policy level to innovate and modernise teaching\, learning and training practices in Europe. Her current focus is on the promotion and uptake of openness in higher education institutions and Member States. Andreia has a PhD in Educational Technology from the Open University of the United Kingdom (2011) and a Masters in Research Methods for Educational Technology from the same institution (2003). She also has a Masters in Linguistics and Literary Studies in English Language from The University of São Paulo\, Brazil (2001). She worked as an OER researcher for the Open University (2006-2011) and has since been involved in several other OER and ICT-related research projects in the UK and abroad. Andreia produced a national report on OER in Brazil which was published by UNESCO IITE (2011). She also acted as a consultant for DigiLearn (2011-2013)\, focusing on awareness raising and continuous professional development on OER and open education for governmental bodies\, private and public higher education institutions and high profile enterprises in Brazil and Latin America. \n  \n\nAgueda Gras-Velázquez Science Programme Manager / Head of the Science Education DepartmentEuropean Schoolnet\, Brussels\, BelgiumDr Agueda Gras-Velazquez is the Science Programme Manager of European Schoolnet (EUN). She is the Head of the Science Education Department at EUN\, in charge of overseeing and coordinating all the Maths and Science projects in which EUN is involved. He holds a PhD in High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics and a PhD in Science Education. He is the Head of R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi\, one of the biggest educational institutions in Greece\, where has been active in the co-ordination and development of research projects on implementation of advanced technologies (e.g. mobile applications\, wearable computers\, VR and AR applications\, robotics) in science education and training. Since 2001 he is the Director of the Ellinogermaniki Agogi Center for Teachers Training. His main research field is the design\, application\, and evaluation of virtual and digital media environments that could bridge the gap between formal and informal science learning. He has been involved in a long series of EU joint research and technology funded projects. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences (since 2003)\, member of the board of ECSITE (since 2004) and has served as Expert Evaluator to the European Commission FP5 & FP6 Programmes. He has also act as a consultant to the development of the FP7s Science in Society Work programme. \n  \n\nTel Amiel Director\, UNESCO Chair in Distance EducationUniversity of Brasilia\, Brasília\, BrazilTel Amiel is a professor in the Department of Methods and Techniques at the Faculty of Education of the University of Brasília\, where he coordinates the Distance Pedagogy course. He is Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair in Distance Education (UnB). He was coordinator of the UNESCO Chair in Open Education (NIED / Unicamp\, 2014-2018). SUMMARY:Insights from an internationally co-developed MOOC on digital citizenship
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nWebinar\nDescription:Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project\, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed\, with the rationale that\, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe\, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs\, that are designed and developed by a single professor\, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience\, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived\, designed\, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries. The webinar will reflect on this experience\, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC\, while being less effective from a production point of view. The underlying question of the webinar will be: can a break-even point between international co-production and effectiveness be found within MOOCs? \nModerator:Timothy ReadEDEN Vice-President for Open Professional CollaborationSenior Lecturer in Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia\, Madrid\, SpainTimothy Read is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED. He did his first degree in Real Time Computer Science at the University of The West of England and his Doctorate in Cognitive Science at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). After leaving England\, he has worked at the University of Granada before moving to UNED in Madrid. He is the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and has directed several national and international funded projects on applying Information and Communication Technologies to Languages for Specific Purposes. He is currently working in the areas of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning and Language Massive Open Online Courses\, and their applications for social inclusion and employability\, and the role of analytics in these areas. He has also been a member of diverse scientific committees and has collaborated as an evaluator of national and international research project proposals. As well as his academic career\, he has worked in different international companies including Rolls Royce (the work he undertook there was subsequently patented)\, Hewlett Packard\, and the telecommunications company I.T.T. In 2015\, he was awarded the title of EDEN Fellow from the Executive Committee of the European Distance and E-Learning Network in recognition of the work he has undertaken in this area. \nPresenters:Fabio NascimbeniSenior Expert\, UNIMED – Unione delle Università del Mediterraneo\, Rome\, ItalyFabio Nascimbeni has a degree in Economics with an international management specialisation and a PhD on Networking for Development. He works as assistant professor in the International University of La Rioja\, and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Sao Paulo (USP)\, where he collaborates with the CEST Centro de Estudos sobre Tecnologia e Sociedade. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Distance and eLearning Network (EDEN)\, of the Editorial Board of the EURODL Journal\, of the Scientific Committee of the Web Based Communities and Social Media Conference\, of the Scientific Board of the Institute for the Relations between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. He has been active in the field of innovation and ICT for learning since 1998\, by designing and coordinating more than 40 research and innovation projects (such as the projects HELIOS\, Learnovation\, VISIR) and promoting European collaboration in different learning areas\, from school education to higher education to lifelong learning. Further\, he has coordinated a number of international collaboration actions in fields spanning from Science and Technology\, ICT research\, information society development\, educational research\, specifically focusing on Latin America\, the Caribbean and Asia. During the last three months\, she took part in the Psychology of Education and E-learning course\, in which she had the opportunity to collaborate with Lattanzio Kibs\, an Italian strategic consulting company. The main aim of this collaboration was to create a literature review about perceptions of microlearning and its influence on learning processes\, which was used as a starting point to build a questionnaire for the evaluation of a microlearning module.\n\n\nDora TrogrlićIT student at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics\, University of Zagreb\, CroatiaDora is a second-year graduate student of the Organization of Business Systems study programme at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics\, University of Zagreb. She received her bachelor degree at the same faculty in 2019. During her studies\, she participated in the Erasmus+ student exchange program at the University of Žilina\, Slovakia\, which ultimately led her to the role of a student associate of the FOI International Relations Office. Besides that\, she held the role of student coordinator at the Center for Volunteering and Humanitarian Work at the faculty. She obtained a master’s degree in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh\, UK in 2014. From 2016 to 2019 she was EDEN vice-president for Open Professional Collaboration. \n\nLisa-Marie Blaschke\nChair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council\nProgramme Director\, Center of Lifelong Learning (C3L)\, Oldenburg\, Germany\nDr. Lisa Marie Blaschke is programmed director of the Management of Technology Enhanced Learning master’s programme at the Center for Lifelong Learning at University of Oldenburg\, Germany\, and a senior researcher at the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg in Heilbronn. She is also a former executive committee member of the European Distance Education and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and is a Senior EDEN Fellow and Chair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council. She is a former adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland University College\, where she received the Stanley J. Drazek Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016. Lisa has a BS in Technical Communication\, and two master’s degrees (MDE\, MBA)\, and a PhD. Prior to academia\, Lisa worked for SAP for over a decade in Walldorf\, Germany\, leading and implementing enterprise-wide knowledge management and training processes and solutions. He has also been a member of diverse scientific committees and has collaborated as an evaluator of national and international research project proposals. In 2015\, he was awarded the title of EDEN Fellow from the Executive Committee of the European Distance and E-Learning Network in recognition of the work he has undertaken in this area. \n\nDiana Andone\nEDEN Vice President\nDirector of the eLearning Center\, Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \nDiana Andone is the Director of the eLearning Center at the Politehnica University of Timisoara in Romania. Dr. Andone runs the team who developed the university’s award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT and is also a professor at the Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, in the area of multimedia and web technologies. She is passionate about the ubiquitous access to technologies and how they can be used to improve people’s lives. Dr. Andone research includes web and mobile technologies\, human-computer interaction\, AR/VR/XR in education and culture\, open education\, online and mobile learning\, OERs and MOOCs. Her publication list comprises 12 books and over 100 papers presented at international conferences\, reviewer of several journals and conferences\, and also chairs IEEE and ACM conferences. Her experience includes over 30 European funded projects\, out of which she coordinated 4\, notably ViCADiS (Virtual Campus for Digital Students)\, DigiCulture (Digital Skills for Creative Industries). She is also involved extensively in several professional organisations and associations (IEEE – Education Society Board\, EDEN – Vice-president\, IADIS\, AACE\, W3C\, IAFES)\, actively supports the local start-up movement (StartUp Weekend\, HackTM\, hackathons\, CoderDojo) and Girls in Tech\, as well as acting in the Board of local Romanian NGOs (Pentru Voi Foundation) in the Timisoara 2023 European Capital of Culture Task Force and a member of Rotary Club Timisoara and Rotary International. \n\nAntonio Teixeira\nFormer EDEN President\nUniversidade Aberta\, Portugal \nAntónio Teixeira is an Associate Professor of open\, distance and network education at Universidade Aberta (UAb). He’s also a researcher at the University of Lisbon and collaborates with the University of Rome 3. He was the Pro-rector for innovation in Distance Learning at Universidade Aberta (2006-09) and President of EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network (2013-16). As a Pro-rector at UAb\, António Teixeira conceived and managed the successful and speedy strategic transformation process of the university from a print-based distance learning institution to a fully online one. Throughout the years\, he has integrated several boards of directors and many expert committees and task forces in higher education institutions and organizations at national and international level. SUMMARY:ICDE Global Outlook to OER: What’s on the calendar and how to engage?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSInternational Council for Open and Distance Education – ICDE is the leading global membership organisation for open\, flexible and distance learning. ICDE is a not-for-profit\, Non-Governmental Organisation registered in Norway with more than 250 members and partners impacting 15+ million students across six continents. The organisation is in a consultative partnership with UNESCO and shares UNESCO’s key value – the universal right to education for all. ICDE has been active on the open education global agenda for two decades. In the past years\, ICDE has been very involved in the consultation of the UNESCO OER Recommendation and is currently strongly supporting its implementation as a member of the UNESCO OER Dynamic Coalition since its launch in March 2020. ICDE deeply believes in the potential of open education to achieve education for all. Open Education in general and OER in particular has been a continuous strategic priority and is again reflected so in the ICDE Strategic Plan for 2021-2024. Ossiannilsson has 200+ publications in peer-reviewed journals and books\, as well as technical reports. She is a member in the Swedish Standard Institute (SIS) and the Job and Skills Coalition Sweden. She is in the Editorial Board for several Journals\, and in addition\, she is Guest Editor for several Special Issues for a variety of Journals.\n[bookline]\nSpeakers:\nTorunn Gjelsvik\nTorunn Gjelsvik\, Norway Torunn Gjelsvik assumed the position as Secretary General for International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) in January 2020. From 2015 to 2018 she was Head of Development at the ICDE Secretariat\, and her international experience covers policy development\, international networks\, global events and cross-country project management related to the global field of online\, open and flexible education. DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONPresentation with DiscussionsDescription:  The presentation will provide some data from the DIGI-HE survey report carried from March to June 2020 (within the framework of the Erasmus+ EUA-led project\, DIGI-HE). The European University Association carried out a survey on digitally enhanced learning and teaching among higher education institutions across Europe. Coinciding with the lockdown and physical distancing\, the survey results provide some information on the sector’s crisis response\, but mainly focussed on the status ante\, and on a plan for the future.The online survey was open to universities and other higher education institutions across Europe. About 80% of the participating 368 respondents in 48 European countries are conventional universities offering mainly on-campus tuition\, although the majority offered\, already before the crisis blended and also some online learning\, usually through short courses. This survey is a timely update to EUA’s 2013 survey on e-learning\,  also as it provides some insights on how institutions responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this session\, some of the key findings of this survey will be presented\, and discussed with a panel of three university representatives. What the ECCOE system has to offerSummary: The European Commission has noted the difficulties that limit the cross-institutional recognition of higher education and upper secondary diplomas. Any automatic mutual recognition that they might highlight as being desirable still seems a long way off\, even though the advantages are clear both for students and institutions. As an important step towards such a solution to this problem\, the ECCOE system (European Credit Clearinghouse for Opening up Education)\, represents an attempt to facilitate the endorsement and appropriation of open\, online and flexible higher education by increasing trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. DESCRIPTION: WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.  \nDescription\nIn the “new normal” that the ongoing pandemic is forcing us to assume\, a lot of attention has been given to the way in which students have to adapt to online or blended learning and how they can be supported. This has not necessarily been the case for teachers. The response to this situation by educational institutions has been varied\, and while most now provide the necessary tools for their teaching staff to use\, relevant training and support has often lagged behind. Although teachers are accepted experts in their fields\, that does not equip them with the knowledge or skills required to carry out their teaching activities online in an effective way. The speakers today will consider the issues related to providing support for teachers and the role communities can have in that process. In a similar way to previous webinars\, our speakers will share their expert advice and practical tips\, responding to a variety of questions such as: \n\nWhat kind of support can most benefit teachers during the ongoing pandemic?\nWhat is the value of communities of support for teachers?\nHow can teachers share their concerns and benefit from the experiences of other teachers in similar disciplines?\nIs it reasonable to expect face-to-face teachers to adapt easily to online learning. DESCRIPTION: WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSThe event will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there! \nDescription\nNew trends emerged in higher education in the last few decades. The delivery methods rapidly changed: part of the courses are now provided in digital or blended form. This got a strong „push” in the time of Covid-19. The rapidly changing labor market also calls for shorter\, industry-specific courses. The degree courses are more and more modularized: smaller\, well defined „chunks” are delivered as SLP-s (electronic short learning programmes\, MOOCS\, etc). This trends should be reflected also in the form of recognition and credentialisation: there is a need to award short learning courses and other learning achievements with some form of credetials.The European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance (ESG 2015) also call on Higher Education Institutions to enable flexible learning pathways\, use different modes of delivery and encourage a sense of autonomy in learners.Micro-credentials can do just that. Taking it simle\, a micro-credential is a subunit of a credential that can be stacked into a larger credential. As Anthony Camilleri formulated in the Masterclass on Micro-credentials in Bled (Slovenia) „For higher education institutions\, micro-credentials require an educational moonshot of our times.”The webinar will discusse the state-of-art of micro-credentials\, based on the results produced by the MicroHE project.The project assessed the adequacy of European recognition instruments for micro-credentials\, in particular ECTS\, the diploma supplement and qualification frameworks\, proposed a ’credit-supplement’ with detailed information about micro-credentials in a way compatible with ECTS\, and created a meta-data standard for verifyable micro-credentials. \nModerator\nFerenc Tátrai\, PhdSenior advisor of EDEN Graduated as chemical engineer at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (TUB) and got his MA degree in applied mathematics at Eötvös Loránd University. He made his postgraduate studies at the Ecole Politechnique Federal de Lausanne and got his PhD from the TUB. After his PhD he spent two years at the University of Brisbane (Australia) doing research and writing a textbook in computer simulation of chemical plants.  In 1996 he was appointed to director of the Phare Office of the Ministry of Education. In 1998 he became the CEO of the first information technology science park „Infopark” in Budapest. From 2000 he became the educational director of the Centre for Informatics of TUB. A year later he was asked to organise the work of the European Social Fund (ESF) National Implementing Agency. He was the director and the Authorizing Officer of the Phare programmes and later responsible for the ESF programmes mostly in the area of education and training. He has expertise in drafting\, implementing\, managing and monitoring EU funded projects and programmes. After eight years he went back to the TUB where he has been teaching for almost 40 years and retired as associate professor from the Department of Chemical Technology of the same university. Having published over 50 scientific papers\, he is co-author of 3 patents and several textbooks in chemical and environmental technology. Seven years ago he joined EDEN as Senior Advisor and takes part in the research work of EDEN in the area of distance and e-learning\, modularisation of higher education courses and credentialing of open and non-formal learning experiences. \nPresenter\nDénes ZarkaDirector at BME-MTI He has been working as head of development and adult education expert at the Centre for Learning Innovation and Adult Learning of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 1997. He worked as Project Manager at the Budapest Training Technology Centre in 1992-1997. His current work includes managing ODL projects\, planning and developing of distance education and e-learning courses and service systems related to the developed\, adapted learning materials (network of tutors\, specification of courses\, staff\, tutor training\, sale). Her work is focused on monitoring and fostering e-learning in Croatian higher education and providing support and advice to institutions\, teachers and students in implementation of new technologies in learning and teaching.
