SUMMARY:No. 2 – Online transformation of universities – having faced the challenges of the pandemic\, are they prepared for the new normal? 2nd part
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nAs a result of the COVID-19 pandemic last March\, universities worldwide faced the need to move all their classes to an online environment overnight\, in order to ensure continuation of their teaching and learning activities. Institutions that had already ventured onto the path of online education realised this transformation much more quickly than those who were less prepared. Others made the transition more modestly\, only beginning to take the first steps into online education. In a remarkable short time\, courses and exams across the globe moved online\, ensuring that universities did not close but rather adapted to the new situation and by doing so managed to save the remainder of the academic year.Having overcome the initial impact of the pandemic and having moved beyond immediate crisis management\, university leaders are now taking the time to reflect on the lessons learned\, to set new strategies for the future\, and to fully prepare their institutions for the new academic year. Although some continue to hope that students will soon return to classrooms\, others see the COVID-19 crisis as a catalyst for educational organisations to implement online teaching and learning systematically and to thus offer a better quality of education in this age of the new normal. What are the key leadership decisions that organisational leaders must make in creating their vision for the future? What short-term and long-term strategies are needed? How can leadership ensure a smooth transition to the online setting and create the necessary infrastructure for training teachers\, and implementing new teaching methods and redesigned curricula? How can universities manage their transition to online while improving the quality of teaching and learning? These are some of the questions we will be addressing in the first two webinars of the EDEN webinar initiative Education in time of a new normal (September 14 and 21).Aimed at policy makers and organisational leaders and management\, but also for all those working in education\, these webinars will provide practical insights and tips from well-known experts\, leaders\, and practitioners in the field of e-learning and online learning.Join the sessions and participate in discussions\, where you will get the ideas you need to turn your vision for the future into actionable steps. Get the answers you need for smoothly leading your organisation in transforming your curriculum to online and ensuring high quality teaching and learning.Questions that will be discussed in this webinar: \n\nHow are academics and professional staff experiencing the rapid transfer to working from home and moving to online teaching and research?\nWhat groups are disadvantaged by working from home?\nHow can universities reduce structural inequalities?\nAre universities more likely to transform\, or mitigate in response to emergency conditions?\nIs the recent Covid19 experience enough for universities to consider real transformation?\nIn order to strengthen resilience\, should a university rely on a strategy of diversifying and broadening its range of courses or specializing its study program and strengthening cooperation with other universities?\nWhat structural\, programmatic\, professional and technological balance should a faculty strive for in order to be able to react successfully to changes and compensate for serious disturbances in its development?\n\n\nModerator\nAntonio TeixeiraFormer EDEN presidentUniversidade Aberta\, Portugal \n \nAntónio Teixeira is an Associate Professor of open\, distance and network education at Universidade Aberta (UAb). SUMMARY:Accessibility and Inclusion in a Time of a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nHow do we handle situations where students do not have access to the Internet and/or technologies\, further expanding the digital divide? To address this issue different stakeholders’ effort is required. Government funding to provide digital technologies for people in need should be invested\, agreements with tech-companies\, libraries\, museums and off line volunteers to provide sources and necessary skills to access resources should be signed. Different projects at international level have been carried out in different settings to respond to such needs and find empirical solutions\, especially in the use of open educational resources and personalised and adaptable learning\, building scenarios for specific targets. \n  \nQuestions to be covered over the session\n\n\nWhat is educational poverty?\nWhat impact did the pandemic have on educational poverty?\nWhat kind of solutions are available to ensuring ongoing education for marginalised groups?\nWhat is the role of technology to face such an issue?\nDoes the combination of culture and technology help to find an effective solution?\n\nModerator\nAlastair CreelmanEDEN FellowE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden.Blog: Corridor of uncertainty – reflections on technology and educationSpecialist in the field of online and distance education based in the section for higher education development. SUMMARY:MicroHE Expert Panel Workshop
DESCRIPTION: WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSThe event will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there! \nDescription\nNew trends emerged in higher education in the last few decades. The delivery methods rapidly changed: part of the courses are now provided in digital or blended form. This got a strong „push” in the time of Covid-19. The rapidly changing labor market also calls for shorter\, industry-specific courses. The degree courses are more and more modularized: smaller\, well defined „chunks” are delivered as SLP-s (electronic short learning programmes\, MOOCS\, etc). This trends should be reflected also in the form of recognition and credentialisation: there is a need to award short learning courses and other learning achievements with some form of credetials. The European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance (ESG 2015) also call on Higher Education Institutions to enable flexible learning pathways\, use different modes of delivery and encourage a sense of autonomy in learners.Micro-credentials can do just that. Taking it simle\, a micro-credential is a subunit of a credential that can be stacked into a larger credential. As Anthony Camilleri formulated in the Masterclass on Micro-credentials in Bled (Slovenia) „For higher education institutions\, micro-credentials require an educational moonshot of our times.”The webinar will discusse the state-of-art of micro-credentials\, based on the results produced by the MicroHE project. The project assessed the adequacy of European recognition instruments for micro-credentials\, in particular ECTS\, the diploma supplement and qualification frameworks\, proposed a ’credit-supplement’ with detailed information about micro-credentials in a way compatible with ECTS\, and created a meta-data standard for verifyable micro-credentials. \nModerator\nFerenc Tátrai\, PhdSenior advisor of EDEN Graduated as chemical engineer at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (TUB) and got his MA degree in applied mathematics at Eötvös Loránd University. He made his postgraduate studies at the Ecole Politechnique Federal de Lausanne and got his PhD from the TUB. After his PhD he spent two years at the University of Brisbane (Australia) doing research and writing a textbook in computer simulation of chemical plants.  In 1996 he was appointed to director of the Phare Office of the Ministry of Education. In 1998 he became the CEO of the first information technology science park „Infopark” in Budapest. From 2000 he became the educational director of the Centre for Informatics of TUB. A year later he was asked to organise the work of the European Social Fund (ESF) National Implementing Agency. He was the director and the Authorizing Officer of the Phare programmes and later responsible for the ESF programmes mostly in the area of education and training. He has expertise in drafting\, implementing\, managing and monitoring EU funded projects and programmes. After eight years he went back to the TUB where he has been teaching for almost 40 years and retired as associate professor from the Department of Chemical Technology of the same university. Having published over 50 scientific papers\, he is co-author of 3 patents and several textbooks in chemical and environmental technology. Seven years ago he joined EDEN as Senior Advisor and takes part in the research work of EDEN in the area of distance and e-learning\, modularisation of higher education courses and credentialing of open and non-formal learning experiences. \nPresenter\nDénes ZarkaDirector at BME-MTI He has been working as head of development and adult education expert at the Centre for Learning Innovation and Adult Learning of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 1997. SUMMARY:No. 11 - Developing 21st Century Skills Through Teaching Online: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \n\nIn these uncertain times due to the Coronavirus COVID-19\, many of us are struggling with the adjustment to working and teaching online. Where do you begin? How do you manage the process? To address these questions and many others\, EDEN is organising a series of practical webinars entitled “EDEN webinar series: Education in time of a pandemic #onlinetogether #covid19”. These webinars are featuring experts and experienced practitioners within the field of open\, distance\, and e-learning.The weekly\, one-hour sessions are held every Monday at 17:00 CEST\, from March through June\, 2020. \n  \nREAD MORE \n\nDescription\nDigital technologies are an integral part of our society today\, and the development of information and communication technologies is one of the biggest revolutions in the field of human communication and information management. Information and communication technologies affect all aspects of society\, as well as learning\, teaching and research\, offering the potential for innovation and for better and greater development of the skills needed for the labour market. In today’s education system\, we have students who were born in the 21st century and with unlimited access to information\, who use digital technologies on a daily basis\, and who no longer want to passively listen and memorize information served. They expect to leave the education system with the knowledge and skills that they need to be employable in the labour market\, to have the capability to be lifelong learners and to actively participate in and contribute to society. Faced with an overnight change in how education is delivered\, students and teachers have had to adapt to a new situation\, learning new technologies\, ways of teaching and learning\, time management\, communication\, and collaboration. SUMMARY:No. 10 - How do we plan for education after the pandemic?
\n  \nREAD MORE \n\nDescription\nThe EDEN “#onlinetogether – Education in time of a pandemic”. webinars will be twinned on 2 June with the similar campaign of ICDE”#learningtogether” For this online event the topic: How to anticipate the global future educational landscape after the pandemic was choosen. UNESCO reported in May that about 75% of pupils and students cannot attend F2F classes. Fully online education on a global scale is unprecedented in history. Today we are talking about the “new normal” and “future normal”. What it is going to look alike?  In this panel\, distinguished speakers will reflect on and share their insights into the present situation in education. We will also try to provide answers to following questions: \n\nHow do you see this situation where all education has moved online? Can online and distance learning replace F2F learning? Some of the campus-based universities have already decided to start this autumn with online classes.\nHow can HEI’s and/or governments address issues of inclusivity\, when both students and staff throughout the world don’t have access to reliable internet or electricity?\nCritics have called online education to be “elitist\,” how are we able to combat that stereotype and truly make remote education affordable and accessible for all?\nWhat is the role of associations such as EDEN and ICDE in this process and how can they contribute to education\, especially in these times?\nWhat steps do institutions have to take to fully embrace the digital transformation and provide education accessible to students?\nIt is unlikely that we will be able to return to the situation we had before the pandemic\, so how do you foresee the future of education?\nSome teachers see online teaching as a temporary measure to be adopted until we return to the previous normal. Is this the case?\nAre public campus universities endangered by distance-teaching ones\, MOOCs and other online programmes?\nWhat about universities that did not previously use any form of e-learning system? What kind of challenges do they face?\nHow can F2F HEI teachers be provided with proper training in the digital skills they need for online teaching and learning?\nStudents and teachers value human contact\, how can this be guaranteed in virtual environments?\n\n\nModerator\nMark BrownEDEN TreasurerProfessor and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning at Dublin City University\, Chair of the ICDE World Conference on Online Learning (Dublin) \nMark is Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). For those already using digital technologies and running blended courses\, it was not such a demanding task\, but for those who teach predominantly in the classroom environment\, it have been quite a sudden an often overwhelming challenge. When now engaging in online learning\, a number of teachers are making first steps looking into how and where to start\, how online teaching should look like\, how to engage with students…others have had to adapt their blended way of working to the fully online mode. Online learning has brought new challenges to students\, too: although they use digital technologies in their everyday life\, online learning is new to them as well\, deprived from the physical presence of the classroom some of them feel isolated and unsecure and feel a lack support. In this webinar\, we will provide practical tips that can help teachers in designing\, structuring and delivering their online courses. We will do so by trying to give you answers to the following questions: \n  \n\nHow to transfer f2f courses to online environments?\nWhat are the necessary elements of an online course?\nIs there a difference between learning outcomes (LO) in f2f and online and how to assess LO in the online environment?\nHow to organize students’ activities to be in correlation with LO and ECTS points of the course?\nHow to make sure that an online course is not just a repository of learning materials?\nHow to ensure effective communication with students in the online environment? What should be the ratio between synchronous and asynchronous communication?\nWhat kind of audio and video resources can be used\, and how many of them to add to the course?\n\nModerator\nFabio NascimbeniHead of Learning Design\, Open University UK \nFabio Nascimbeni works as Assistant Professor on eLearning Innovation at the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR)\, where holds the Telefonica Chair on Digital Society and Education. SUMMARY:Teaching Online Competences: Debate in a Post Confinement Scenario
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges. \nDescription\nIn recent months teachers needed to perform their activities online without proper training. They had to perform their duties in an unknown scenario for most of them. This fact and the already existing need of a teacher online reference framework motivate the need to discuss a set of teaching online requirements. A proposal already discussed by the EDEN Executive Committee will be presented followed by experiences learned. The proposal is based on a CALOHEE publication “Guidelines and Reference Points for the Design and Delivery of Degree Programmes in Teacher Education” by Julia M. González Ferreras and Maria Yarosh. A set of competencies required to teach online for level 6 of the EQF will be presented in terms of descriptors. The debate of the webinar is expected to be useful to tune the future terms of reference and to learn from recent experiences of shifting to online mode. \n  \nYou will meet\nAlfredo SoeiroEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,University of Porto\, PortugalDegrees in Civil Engineering (U. SUMMARY:ODL Unplugged: A Question of Care
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there!WATCH THE RECORDINGRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.Panel Format:  Conversational and informal \nDescription\n\nAs online and distance learning (ODL) instructors\, managers or members of support teams in the current pandemic\, we are challenged with a multitude of demands on our time and energy. A central responsibility right now is providing care and support for students and ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their new online learning environments\, or supporting teachers so that they are in a position to provide that care. Many of us must also care for our children and/or other family members during the lockdown\, in addition to carrying out teaching and other work activities from home. Most importantly\, though\, we need to find the time and space for self-care: focusing on ensuring that one stays strong and healthy in order to care for others. \nDuring this session\, our panel of experts will talk about the topic of care and self-care\, particularly within online and distance learning environments. Joining our panel of experts will be Deborah Arnold from AUNEGe in France\, Dr. Paul Prinsloo from the University of South Africa\, Eszter Salamon from Parents International in The Netherlands\, and Dr. Jane Brindley from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada.   Moderating the session will be Dr. Don Olcott\, Jr.\, Global Higher Education Consultant from Romania. We look forward to seeing you at the webinar! \n  \n\nOpening Panelist Questions – All Panelists will Answer:\n\n1) What can we learn and transfer from existing experiences in remote working with and managing remote teams to online? What else is needed to ensure self-care and care for others?2) What insights can we draw from the research on e-leadership and e-management? What other fields can help us (psychology\, sociology etc)? \n\n\nModerator\nLisa Marie BlaschkeSenior Fellow and Chair of the Board of EDEN Council of FellowsProgramme Director\, Center of Lifelong Learning (C3L)\, Oldenburg\, GermanyDr. Lisa Marie Blaschke She is a former executive committee member of the European Distance Education and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and is a Senior EDEN Fellow and Chair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council. How can you help your students manage it? How can you manage it yourself? The term infodemic has been coined to outline the perils of misinformation phenomena during the management of virus outbreaks\, since it could even speed up the epidemic process by influencing and fragmenting social response (World Health Organization\, 2019; Cinelli et.\, al 2020).How has been infodemic studied so far? How can we assess learners’ digital literacy and critical thinking abilities in collaborative virtual environment (CVEs)? Starting from these questions\, the present webinar will be structured in three parts: \n\nThe concept of infodemic will be presented to see how it is possible to monitor the spreading of misleading unreliable information\, by combining Big Data and Natural Language Processing techniques (Cinelli et al.\, 2020)\nThe potential role of Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy as “antibody” for the infodemic will be discussed (Katz\, 2007)\nFinally\, a Survey session will be carried out. Data collected will be employed to develop new evidences for the automatic assessment of online learners’ Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy (Poce et al.\, 2019).\n\nQuestions to be covered over the session\n\nWhich kind of resources we can suggest to our students to manage the current infodemic?\nHow can we protect ourselves from misleading information during an infodemic?\nHow can we support the development of Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy in students?\nHow can we assess students’ Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy?\nHow can e-learning strategies be used to develop and assess students Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy?\n\nReferences\n\nCinelli\, M.\, Quattrociocchi\, W.\, Galeazzi\, A.\, Valensise\, C. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in order to contain the spread of the COVID -19 pandemic. UNESCO estimates that more than 850 million children and young people – about 80% of the global student population – have had to stay away from schools and universities due to pandemic COVID 19. Nationwide closures are in effect in some 110 countries and local closures in many others. This means more than doubling the number of students prevented from attending educational institutions\, and a further increase is expected during this Covid 19 pandemic. From one day to the next\, teachers around the world have found themselves managing virtual classrooms\, communicating with their students over social media platforms and learning by doing as they provide education from a distance to over 1.5 billion students affected by school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So when education moves home\, what are the implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders \nSome questions that will be discussed \nDuring the webinar\, the questions of why\, what\, who\, how\, and when will be discussed when education moves home\, and what the implications are for students\, academics\, administrators and education managers. \n\nThe differences between emergency distance learning and online learning will be discussed.\nHow can high-quality education be facilitated\, promoted and offered despite many challenges?\nHow can academics and learners be protected\, supported and recognized?\nWhat kind of lessons will we learn from Covid19 and what challenges do we face?\nOne obvious problem is that the “educational business” will not be the same as it is today.\n\n  \nWhen education moves home: implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders\nMonday\, 6 April\, 2020\, 17:00 CET \nModerator\n Diana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\, PUT https://elearning.upt.ro/diana-andone/Dr. Andone runs the team who developed the university’s award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT and is also a professor at the Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, in the area of multimedia and web technologies. SUMMARY:AI and Understanding Learning
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Recording \nDescription\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) has become more relevant in the last years in the education and training landscape. AI may be characterized as started with machine learning (ML) as a path to humanlike intelligence. ML can treat an ocean of data with data mining techniques\, data analytics and other similar approaches. And forms of AI have been developed\, based on ML\, with algorithms for vision\, speech recognition\, reasoning\, navigation\, etc.. Most of these approaches have been used in education and training. The reasoning and decision making associated with AI are the main advances that can help understanding the effectiveness of teaching and of training. Assessment of learning is fundamental to improve teaching and training. Learning is a personal and individual action and AI\, as an outsider and independent procedure\, may help the assessment of acquisition of learning. The webinar addresses some experiences and projects that may bring some food for thought as possibilities for research. The topics to address are: \n\nTime to assess learning outcomes in e-learning: aligning assessment methods with the diverse set of learning outcomes project\, University of Porto\, Portugal.\nArtificial Intelligence and Assessment: In AI assessment\, a software system infers problem-specific rules for automated scoring from examples of instructor grading of student assignments\, Teaching Commons\, University of Stanford\, USA.\nKey messages on AI in Education\, Working Group on Learning\, Teaching and Assessment\, European Commission.\nChinese school using facial recognition to analyze students’ emotions: Techspot report on how identifying emotions from students with AI may improve learning. SUMMARY:Unboxing the Textbook for an Open World
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentation \nPresentation & panel discussion\nDescription: \nThe textbook is an enduring staple of higher education\, occupying a key role in formal educational settings. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover\, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large\, often expensive\, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover\, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley\, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? To help “unbox” the book\, this panel seeks to explore students’ use (and non-use) of textbooks for learning in higher education; what alternatives might exist; and to try and envisage textbooks and educational resources in a more open future. \nReferences: \nWiley\, D. SUMMARY:Open Education for Civil Engagement and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nOpen education has a key role to play in potentiating social inclusion. As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity\, freedom\, democracy\, equality\, the rule of law\, respect for human rights\, the rights of minorities. However\, as also noted\, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion\, namely: populism\, xenophobia\, divisive nationalism\, discrimination\, misinformation\, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism). \nIn order to counter these problems\, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However\, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need\, therefore\, to teach and support students\, especially the younger generations\, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In this webinar different aspects and examples of the role of open educational resources and practices for citizenship education will be considered and how they can be potentiated in the future. \nModerator: Timothy Read\, UNED\, EDEN Vice-president \nPresenters: \nAlfredo Soeiro\nEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,\nUniversity of Porto\, Portugal \nDegrees in Civil Engineering (U.
