DESCRIPTION:With the EDEN Open Education Week\, Virtual events 2021 having come to an end\, EDEN wishes to thank all the participants\, moderators\, panelists\, organisers and partner institutions for supporting us in hosting an incredibly insightful and significant online event series\, for the sixth year already. The online webinar series organised by EDEN arching through five days (March 1–5) was a great opportunity to reflect on changes and achievements influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and to enhance the possibilities of online and distance learning in the hopefully not so distant “new normal”. Participants had access to daily online webinars and panel sessions of expert scholars and practitioners who presented a variety of cutting edge open and online learning topics\, from innovations in design to open educational research. In 2017\, Mark was recognised by the Commonwealth of Learning as a world leader in the area of Open\, Online and Digital Education.Presenters:Mairead Nic Giolla Mhichil Dr. Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichíl is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow\, with the National Institute of Digital Learning in Dublin City University\, researching digital innovation and implementation in higher education. Mairéad is the institutional lead on micro-credentials and has conducted the first national micro-credential survey of employers and employees in Ireland. She serves on a national steering committee to develop and implement a national approach to the development and delivery of micro-credentials with other sectoral stakeholders. She is a Fulbright Scholar with the University of Notre Dame in the USA and lectures in Information Technology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in DCU. Mairéad has spent time working for national and international organisations in financial\, computing and consulting positions including extensive involvement in tech start-ups. Mairéad is involved in a number of European research projects as both PI and researcher. Mairéad is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education (ETHE) and on the board of ALT-J and is an active reviewer for a number of journals. \n\nWim Van Petegem Dr. Wim Van Petegem is Director of AVNet\, a central support unit at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\, Belgium. He is an EDEN Senior Fellow\, member of the board of the EDEN Fellows Council\, and former EDEN Vice-President for Research.  At the start of 2021 Wim began as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Open\, Distance and eLearning. SUMMARY:Role of the openness in shaping of the post-pandemic education (Role of international associations)
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPanel discussion\nDescription:We are facing the biggest disruption of education in history caused by the global health pandemic and it is more important than ever to ensure access to education. As schools closed\, over a billion of students have been hampered from learning in the way they used to\, and inequalities in access to education have become even more evident. If we take the position that education is common good and should be reachable and available to all\, it is our obligation to join efforts and work in this direction. Open Educational Resources (OER) can help in achieving inclusive education aiming to ensure that learners with diverse needs and preferences (such as those with disabilities) have equal opportunities in accessing learning resources\, services\, and learning experience in general. The Open Education movement is evolving\, and besides creating and publishing OERs\, focus is shifting to Open Education Practices that can be implemented using OER. It is evident that the Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a paradigm shift in how learners of all ages\, worldwide\, can access learning. It is\, therefore essential\, more than ever that the global community come together now to foster universal access to information and knowledge through OER. In this session\, we plan to discuss what actions and approaches could be taken by international associations and communities to contribute to this goal.Questions that will be discussed: \n\nWhy is openness in education and research still an issue?\nHow can collaboration and exchange of experience contribute to expanded understanding of benefits of open education?\nHow to foster OERs to support learners and educational professionals in online learning? SUMMARY:Supporting teaching and learning in schools through OER: Lessons from the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription:As a result of the impact of Covid-19\, schools across Europe and the world had to close for long periods. Learning activities had to be conducted remotely. The massive transition of the European school system to online learning was facilitated by the large number of open educational resources available on the internet. OERs and MOOCs could be found in dedicated aggregator portals\, institutional repositories curated by universities\, foundations and public agencies or through individual recommendations by peers. Teachers were advised to actively search\, use and share them.In the webinar a number of experts\, representing the European Commission\, Unesco\, universities\, NGOs and the school system\, will discuss how OER use and reuse has expanded during the pandemic and how this has contributed to support the quality of teaching and learning during these challenging times. SUMMARY:Insights from an internationally co-developed MOOC on digital citizenship
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nWebinar\nDescription:Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project\, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed\, with the rationale that\, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe\, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs\, that are designed and developed by a single professor\, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience\, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived\, designed\, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries. The webinar will reflect on this experience\, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC\, while being less effective from a production point of view. SUMMARY:Supporting educators and education in COVID-19 crisis – EDEN perspective
DESCRIPTION:The International Council for Open and Distant Education (ICDE) will hold its President Forum on 25 November 2020. Prior to the 25 November regional consultations a series of activities will take place in the form of Satellite Engagement Events. The outcomes from these events hosted by ICDE partner associations will be used as a guide for reflection by registered delegates of the forum. EDEN is proud to contribute to the ICDE forum with an online Satellite Engagement Event on 23 November\, 2020\, 17:00-18:00 CET with distinguished speakers of the EDEN community to share their hands on experience and expertise.WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATION\nDescription\nEDEN has been the major European network for distance and e-learning in Europe and globally for nearly 30 years. In these challenging times\, EDEN has strengthened its leadership role by bringing together the professional community of experts and practitioners in online learning\, with the aim of providing and sharing its expertise and knowledge\, facilitating and fostering research and development in distance and e-learning\, and making information about current developments in education available to those confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a response to the global crisis and challenge of moving to fully online education overnight\, EDEN has initiated a series of practical webinars (#onlinetogether) on how to take face-to-face education online. These webinars focused on the day-to-day challenges faced by teachers and educators who are struggling with the adjustment to working and teaching online\, providing practical tips and guidance – especially helpful for those who have always taught in a traditional classroom. After very positive responses and feedback to the spring series of webinars from participants all over the world\, an autumn webinar series followed.\nAlong with #onlinetogether initiative\, EDEN has taken further steps and for the first time held a very successful first Annual Conference and first Research Workshop fully online\, exploring the potential of this innovative format and\, showing that it can meet any and every challenge.\nSpeakers\nSandra Kučina Softić\nEDEN President\nUniversity Computing Centre SRCE\, Croatia\nSandra Kučina Softić is EDEN president and Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the University of Zagreb University Computer Centre (SRCE). Her work is focused on monitoring and fostering the e-learning implementation in higher education institutions in Croatia and providing support and advice to institutions\, teachers and students in implementation of new technologies in the learning and teaching process.  She was appointed Croatian representative in ET2020 Working group on Digital Skills and Technologies (2016-2018) and in ET2020 Working group on Digital Education: learning\, teaching and Assessment (2018-2020). She obtained a master’s degree in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh\, UK in 2014. From 2016 to 2019 she was EDEN vice-president for Open Professional Collaboration. \n\nLisa-Marie Blaschke\nChair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council\nProgramme Director\, Center of Lifelong Learning (C3L)\, Oldenburg\, Germany\nDr. Lisa Marie Blaschke is programmed director of the Management of Technology Enhanced Learning master’s programme at the Center for Lifelong Learning at University of Oldenburg\, Germany\, and a senior researcher at the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg in Heilbronn. She is also a former executive committee member of the European Distance Education and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and is a Senior EDEN Fellow and Chair of the Board of the EDEN Fellows Council. She is a former adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland University College\, where she received the Stanley J. Drazek Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016. Lisa has a BS in Technical Communication\, and two master’s degrees (MDE\, MBA)\, and a PhD. Prior to academia\, Lisa worked for SAP for over a decade in Walldorf\, Germany\, leading and implementing enterprise-wide knowledge management and training processes and solutions. Lisa’s research interests are in the areas of self-determined learning (heutagogy)\, online collaborative learning\, pedagogical application of web 2.0 technology and social media\, and user interface design. \n\nTimothy Read\nEDEN Vice-president for Open Professional Collaboration\nUNED\, Spain\nTimothy Read is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED. He did his first degree in Real Time Computer Science at the University of The West of England and his Doctorate in Cognitive Science at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). After leaving England\, he worked at the University of Granada before moving to UNED in Madrid. He is the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and has directed several national and international funded projects on applying Information and Communication Technologies to Languages for Specific Purposes. He is currently working in the areas of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning and Language Massive Open Online Courses\, and their applications for social inclusion and employability\, and the role of analytics in these areas. He has also been a member of diverse scientific committees and has collaborated as an evaluator of national and international research project proposals. As well as his academic career\, he has worked in different international companies including Rolls Royce (the work he undertook there was subsequently patented)\, Hewlett Packard\, and the telecommunications company I.T.T. In 2015\, he was awarded the title of EDEN Fellow from the Executive Committee of the European Distance and E-Learning Network in recognition of the work he has undertaken in this area. \n\nDiana Andone\nEDEN Vice President\nDirector of the eLearning Center\, Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \nDiana Andone is the Director of the eLearning Center at the Politehnica University of Timisoara in Romania. Dr. Andone runs the team who developed the university’s award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT and is also a professor at the Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, in the area of multimedia and web technologies. She is passionate about the ubiquitous access to technologies and how they can be used to improve people’s lives. Dr. Andone research includes web and mobile technologies\, human-computer interaction\, AR/VR/XR in education and culture\, open education\, online and mobile learning\, OERs and MOOCs. Her publication list comprises 12 books and over 100 papers presented at international conferences\, reviewer of several journals and conferences\, and also chairs IEEE and ACM conferences. Her experience includes over 30 European funded projects\, out of which she coordinated 4\, notably ViCADiS (Virtual Campus for Digital Students)\, DigiCulture (Digital Skills for Creative Industries). She is also involved extensively in several professional organisations and associations (IEEE – Education Society Board\, EDEN – Vice-president\, IADIS\, AACE\, W3C\, IAFES)\, actively supports the local start-up movement (StartUp Weekend\, HackTM\, hackathons\, CoderDojo) and Girls in Tech\, as well as acting in the Board of local Romanian NGOs (Pentru Voi Foundation) in the Timisoara 2023 European Capital of Culture Task Force and a member of Rotary Club Timisoara and Rotary International. \n\nAntonio Teixeira\nFormer EDEN President\nUniversidade Aberta\, Portugal \nAntónio Teixeira is an Associate Professor of open\, distance and network education at Universidade Aberta (UAb). He’s also a researcher at the University of Lisbon and collaborates with the University of Rome 3. He was the Pro-rector for innovation in Distance Learning at Universidade Aberta (2006-09) and President of EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network (2013-16). As a Pro-rector at UAb\, António Teixeira conceived and managed the successful and speedy strategic transformation process of the university from a print-based distance learning institution to a fully online one. Throughout the years\, he has integrated several boards of directors and many expert committees and task forces in higher education institutions and organizations at national and international level. He’s currently an external expert for AQU Catalunya and ACPUA quality assurance agencies in Spain and the research and innovation national agency of Uruguay (ANII) among others.\nAntónio Teixeira has participated in over thirty international research projects and authored over one hundred scientific articles and other publications. He is an EDEN Senior Fellow and a member of the Board of the Council of EDEN Fellows.

DESCRIPTION:“Open and Distance Education: New challenges and Perspectives”\, co-organised by the Ellininogermaniki Agogi and European Distance and E-Learning Network – EDEN will take on 6-7 November 2020. Taking into account the special conditions under Covid19 the conference will be available through virtual facilities (e.g. zoom and youtube) while participants will be additionally able to join at the virtual conference hall of Ellinogermaniki Agogi in Second Life. The Open Classroom strand within EDEN was launched in 1995\, with the focus on distance education and new technologies in school level education and training\, mapping and exchange of information about initiatives\, and the transfer of ideas from the more traditional areas of ODL to the school sector. The success of the first conference\, entitled “The Open Classroom”\, and the continuing interest of the international ODL professional community was the catalyst to develop this movement further within EDEN.The Athens Open Classroom Conference this September aims at exploring the idea of “Open School” as an engaging environment that effectively introduces novel methodologies\, tools and content by re-designing learning to accommodate and include difference and by bringing together families\, community groups\, local businesses\, experts\, universities\, into an innovation ecosystem. The event is the latest of a series of Open Classroom Conferences co-organised by Ellininogermaniki Agogi and EDEN in the last years (2019: Creating Conditions for Deeper Learning in Science; 2017: Open Schools for Open Societies; 2015: Open Discovery Space: Transforming schools into innovative learning organisations; 2011: Never Waste a Crisis! Dr. Blackburn is the Chief Learning Officer at Ignite Nation where she is vital in the movement from on-ground to virtual training.  Before serving as CLO with Ignite\, she was the VP and Chief Academic Officer for Barnes & Noble Education\, LoudCloud and the Senior Advisory Consultant / Strategic Account Manager for Higher Education for Desire2Learn\, where she provided guidance and planning for corporate and academic clients. She has also been the Associate Provost of Educational Enhancement at the University of Texas at Dallas and Director for Instructional Technology Services at Texas A&M University where she spearheaded advancement in instructional technology across both institutions. Dr. Blackburn received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONSInternational Council for Open and Distance Education – ICDE is the leading global membership organisation for open\, flexible and distance learning. ICDE is a not-for-profit\, Non-Governmental Organisation registered in Norway with more than 250 members and partners impacting 15+ million students across six continents. The organisation is in a consultative partnership with UNESCO and shares UNESCO’s key value – the universal right to education for all. ICDE has been active on the open education global agenda for two decades. In the past years\, ICDE has been very involved in the consultation of the UNESCO OER Recommendation and is currently strongly supporting its implementation as a member of the UNESCO OER Dynamic Coalition since its launch in March 2020. ICDE deeply believes in the potential of open education to achieve education for all. Open Education in general and OER in particular has been a continuous strategic priority and is again reflected so in the ICDE Strategic Plan for 2021-2024. She is also the Chair of the ICDE OER Advocacy Committee. She works with ISO\, especially on quality\, but also on Futures Concepts. At national level Ossiannilsson is the Vice President of the Swedish Association for Distance Education (SADE) and Board member at the Swedish Organization for E-Competence (REK). She has worked with OER in different areas and perspectives at national and international projects and levels. Since 2000\, she has worked at Lund University Sweden. She is a frequent consultant and quality reviewer at several prestigious national universities. Ossiannilsson earned her PhD at Oulu University\, Finland in 2012. Ossiannilsson has 200+ publications in peer-reviewed journals and books\, as well as technical reports. She is a member in the Swedish Standard Institute (SIS) and the Job and Skills Coalition Sweden. She is in the Editorial Board for several Journals\, and in addition\, she is Guest Editor for several Special Issues for a variety of Journals.\n[bookline]\nSpeakers:\nTorunn Gjelsvik\nTorunn Gjelsvik\, Norway Torunn Gjelsvik assumed the position as Secretary General for International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) in January 2020. She has held several executive leadership positions in various educational institutions and organizations\, including the national membership association Flexible Education Norway. From 2015 to 2018 she was Head of Development at the ICDE Secretariat\, and her international experience covers policy development\, international networks\, global events and cross-country project management related to the global field of online\, open and flexible education. She holds a Master’s Degree in Nordic languages and literature with a minor in French and History. She has additional studies in information and communication\, strategy and project management from BI Norwegian Business School. She is a member of the Orientation Board of CNED (The National Centre for Distance Education in France).\n\nJacques Dang\nJacques Dang\, France\, Technology Director at HEC Paris. He leads collaborative initiatives in technological R&D\, in cooperation with French universities\, high-tech companies from the Systematic Paris Region cluster and academic partners from Europe and French-speaking Africa. These projects involve next-generation networks\, distance learning as well as evaluation and learning analytics. He is the coordinator for the PERICLES project\, an e-education project from the national Investments for the Future program (Programme des Investissements d’Avenir). He is a member of the French delegation to ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36\, Secretary of the Board for AUNEGE\, the French OER repository for Management & Economics\, secretary of the Board for L’Université Numérique\, the federation of French OER repositories\, and a member of the board for International Council on Badges and Credentials (ICoBC).\n\nAnaïs Røed Malbrand\n\nAnaïs Røed Malbrand\, Norway\, is Senior Advisor at the International Council for Open and Distance Education – ICDE. She is the key contact at the ICDE Secretariat for the ICDE Francophone OER working group\, ENCORE+ project and the OER Advocacy Committee. She has previously held positions in New York and Santiago de Chile at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)\, in Madrid at UNHabitat\, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Organization of IberoAmerican States for Education\, Science and Culture (OEI) and at Oxfam in Spain and Guatemala. SUMMARY:Digitally enhanced learning at European higher education institutions – state of play and prospects
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONPresentation with DiscussionsDescription:  The presentation will provide some data from the DIGI-HE survey report carried from March to June 2020 (within the framework of the Erasmus+ EUA-led project\, DIGI-HE). The European University Association carried out a survey on digitally enhanced learning and teaching among higher education institutions across Europe. Coinciding with the lockdown and physical distancing\, the survey results provide some information on the sector’s crisis response\, but mainly focussed on the status ante\, and on a plan for the future.The online survey was open to universities and other higher education institutions across Europe. About 80% of the participating 368 respondents in 48 European countries are conventional universities offering mainly on-campus tuition\, although the majority offered\, already before the crisis blended and also some online learning\, usually through short courses. This survey is a timely update to EUA’s 2013 survey on e-learning\,  also as it provides some insights on how institutions responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this session\, some of the key findings of this survey will be presented\, and discussed with a panel of three university representatives. While 2020 has been described as the year of “the great onlining” of higher education there remains a common perception that online learning is inferior to traditional face-to-face models of education. This debate aims to confront this perception as two teams respond to the moot\, “this house believes that online learning is just as good as traditional face-to-face models of education”. The debate is intended to address this serious issue as panel members present and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of online learning in comparison to traditional delivery modes in both a scholarly and entertaining manner. She is within the top 50 researchers in the world in the area of educational computer-based research according to Microsoft Research. After leaving England\, he worked at the University of Granada before moving to UNED in Madrid. He is the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and has directed several national and international funded projects on applying Information and Communication Technologies to Languages for Specific Purposes. What the ECCOE system has to offerSummary: The European Commission has noted the difficulties that limit the cross-institutional recognition of higher education and upper secondary diplomas. Any automatic mutual recognition that they might highlight as being desirable still seems a long way off\, even though the advantages are clear both for students and institutions. As an important step towards such a solution to this problem\, the ECCOE system (European Credit Clearinghouse for Opening up Education)\, represents an attempt to facilitate the endorsement and appropriation of open\, online and flexible higher education by increasing trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. The role of Model Credit Recognition Agreements (MCRAs) will be discussed together with aspects of their use that have emerged from the first round of an in-house peer review of their functionality. Currently he is director of regional VET provider and president of EUproVET\, one of the European VET provider associations. Isokallio chairs international WG of AMKE. AMKE is Finnish VET providers association.Title: Innovative teaching and guidance provision\, case FinlandSummary: Finland has combined all VET legislation in one law since 2018. In vocational education and training\, work-based learning is planned as part of the student’s personal competence development plan. For work-based learning\, students have either an apprenticeship agreement or a training agreement. By remote learning and teaching\, moving education from in-campus to online\, hybrid education\, all educational institutions have relied on educational technologies. The education actively responded to these changes by including more and more open education principles\, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational\, open source\, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations\, open source projects\, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies\, content\, and standards in education. They are guided by the 12 principles as listed in the Barcelona Blueprint 2019 and they constantly plan to thrive the learning ecosystems. This workshop intends to discuss its guiding principles but also to present some recent developments with technologies in innovative education. Moodle\, MoodleNet\, H5P\, BigBlueButton and RaspberryPi are among the most used open source solutions\, and the future plans for development will be presented. Author of over 25 scientific papers and book chapters published in international conferences and journals\, Vlad is involved in several European research projects in the field of eLearning. He is also a lecturer for UPT.\n \nSpeakers\nMart Laanperesenior researcher\, Centre for Educational Technology\, Tallinn University\, Estonia \nMart Laanpere is a senior researcher at Centre for Educational Technology\, in Tallinn University\, Estonia. He holds PhD degree in educational science (from Tallinn University) and MSc in Educational & Training Systems Design (University of Twente\, the Netherlands). He was a founder and long-term director of the Centre for Educational Technology. His main focus in research is conceptual design and analysis of affordances of technology-enhanced learning systems and tools\, assessment of digital competence of teachers and digital maturity of schools\, instructional design\, didactics of computing education. He is a member of the steering group of National Strategy for Lifelong Learning 2014-2020. Mart has contributed to development\, piloting and implementation of European digital competence models DigComp\, DigCompOrg and DigCompEdu. \n  \n\nCengiz Hakan AYDINPhD\, Full professor at Anadolu University of Turkey\, steering committee member of OpenupEd and member of ICDE’s Advocacy Committee for OER.Cengiz Hakan AYDIN\, PhD\, is a full professor in Anadolu University of Turkey where he has been offering courses in the field of open and distance learning since early 1990s such as Designing Open and Distance Learning\, Instructional Design\, and Research on ODL. He had also served as instructional designer in the Open Education System of the University until September 2017 and as the dean of one of the major ODL faculty of the University between 2013-2016. His current research interest focuses on design and development of ODL environments\, integration of new technologies into ODL\, Open Education Resources (OER) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Professor AYDIN served as the President and the Board Member of the International Division of AECT\, as one of the board member of the International Council for Educational Media (ICEM). Professor AYDIN has been a member of editorial boards of the journals\, the International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning (IRRODL)\, and Educational Media International (EMI). He is currently serving as a member of the steering committee of OpenupEd\, and a member of the ICDE’s Advocacy Committee for OER. \n  \n\nMarjan Krašnafull professor for Didactics of ICT and at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Maribor.Marjan Krašna is a full professor for Didactics of ICT at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Maribor. He is working in the area of application of computer in education and didactics strategies of teaching with ICT. He is the head of Center for Information Communication and Interactive Technologies at the Faculty of Arts. During the period (2014-2018) he was appointed to the workgroup for development of e-learning at the University of Maribor. He was also a head of Quality control committee at the Faculty of Arts. He is a member of Steering committee of Croatian Society for Information\, Communication and Electronic Technology – MIPRO –Computer in education (CE) section and Program committee of Central European Conference on Information and Intelligent Systems (CECIIS). He is a long time IEEE member where he was the head of IEEE Education section in Slovenia.
