SUMMARY:ODL Unplugged: A Question of Care
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will take place in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room – Join us there!REGISTERWATCH LIVE ON OUR CHANNELRegistered webinar participants will be awarded by EDEN open badges.Panel Format:  Conversational and informal – everybody chills! \nDescription\n\nAs online and distance learning (ODL) instructors\, managers or members of support teams in the current pandemic\, we are challenged with a multitude of demands on our time and energy. A central responsibility right now is providing care and support for students and ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their new online learning environments\, or supporting teachers so that they are in a position to provide that care. Many of us must also care for our children and/or other family members during the lockdown\, in addition to carrying out teaching and other work activities from home. Most importantly\, though\, we need to find the time and space for self-care: focusing on ensuring that one stays strong and healthy in order to care for others. \nDuring this session\, our panel of experts will talk about the topic of care and self-care\, particularly within online and distance learning environments. Joining our panel of experts will be Deborah Arnold from AUNEGe in France\, Dr. Paul Prinsloo from the University of South Africa\, Eszter Salamon from Parents International in The Netherlands\, and Dr. Jane Brindley from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada.   Moderating the session will be Dr. Don Olcott\, Jr.\, Global Higher Education Consultant from Romania. We look forward to seeing you at the webinar! \n  \n\nOpening Panelist Questions – All Panelists will Answer:\n\n1) What can we learn and transfer from existing experiences in remote working with and managing remote teams to online? What else is needed to ensure self-care and care for others?2) What insights can we draw from the research on e-leadership and e-management? What other fields can help us (psychology\, sociology etc)? \n\n\nModerator\nDon Olcott\, Jr.EDEN Senior Fellow and Vice Chair EDEN Council of FellowsFRSA\, Global ConsultantDr. Don Olcott\, Jr.\, FRSA\, EDEN Senior Fellow & Vice Chair\, Council of Fellows; NAP Steering Committee is a Global Higher Education Consultant specialising in educational leadership and open and distance education.  He is based in Romania.  Don is adjunct full Professor of Educational Leadership and ODL with the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC)\, Honorary Professor\, University of South Africa (Unisa) and an adjunct instructor with Oldenburg University\, Germany in the MTEL Master’s program.  From 2014-2017\, he served as a visiting Professor and Co-Director of the uImagine Digital Innovation Laboratory and as Head of Virtual Campus at Charles Sturt University in Australia. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in order to contain the spread of the COVID -19 pandemic. UNESCO estimates that more than 850 million children and young people – about 80% of the global student population – have had to stay away from schools and universities due to pandemic COVID 19. Nationwide closures are in effect in some 110 countries and local closures in many others. This means more than doubling the number of students prevented from attending educational institutions\, and a further increase is expected during this Covid 19 pandemic. From one day to the next\, teachers around the world have found themselves managing virtual classrooms\, communicating with their students over social media platforms and learning by doing as they provide education from a distance to over 1.5 billion students affected by school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So when education moves home\, what are the implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders \nSome questions that will be discussed \nDuring the webinar\, the questions of why\, what\, who\, how\, and when will be discussed when education moves home\, and what the implications are for students\, academics\, administrators and education managers. \n\nThe differences between emergency distance learning and online learning will be discussed.\nHow can high-quality education be facilitated\, promoted and offered despite many challenges?\nHow can academics and learners be protected\, supported and recognized?\nWhat kind of lessons will we learn from Covid19 and what challenges do we face?\nOne obvious problem is that the “educational business” will not be the same as it is today.\n\n  \nWhen education moves home: implications for students\, academics\, administrators\, and education leaders\nMonday\, 6 April\, 2020\, 17:00 CET \nModerator\n Diana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\, PUT https://elearning.upt.ro/diana-andone/Dr. Andone runs the team who developed the university’s award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT and is also a professor at the Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, in the area of multimedia and web technologies. SUMMARY:2020 Timisoara
DESCRIPTION:EDEN 2020 Annual Conference\, Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \n\n\n\nHuman and artificial intelligence for the society of the future  \n\n\n\nInspiring digital education for the next STE(A)M student generation\n\n\n\n\nIn the end\, all innovation is social innovation and technologies become real when they change social practices.Ilkka Tuomi\, EDEN Bruges Conference keynote 2019 \n\n\n\n\n“Education is back where it belongs – at the top of the European policy agenda” stated the European Commission. We intend that Europe will be considered a strong and allied partner to future generations\, and that the EU education system must make our societies future proof. \n\n\n\nEducation is often envisioned in terms of innovation\, excellence and competitiveness. But learning is also about reaching personal perfection\, using a holistic approach that supports personal and professional development\, learner needs and self-realization across different learning environments. \n\n\n\nThat education can be a social elevator and a vehicle to ensuring a sustainable society is acknowledged. Education delivers the social contract. Skills become obsolete when social\, cultural and material contexts change. Creativity contributes to diversity and innovation\, thus Europe’s cultural and creative sector is recognized as a substantial resource and driver for innovation and growth.  \n\n\n\nDigital education has proven to change learning and working practices in the society of today. The reality of lifelong learning towards sustainable life remains as urgent as ever. Intelligence\, human and artificial\, is in focus\, and understanding students and their learning and application of new technologies in education inspires further development.  \n\n\n\nTo prepare our students for this complex\, challenging and exciting future we can use digital tools and methods to enhance and enable problem-based approaches to  the creative process\, student inquiry\, dialogue and critical thinking\, experiential learning\, and collaboration\, providing students with opportunities and skills to  make connections between concepts and build productive networks. \n\n\n\nSkills in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) represent an important part of basic literacy in today’s knowledge economy. With the inclusion of a critical component – the human being\, STE(A)M Education integrates the arts – humanities\, languages\, dance\, drama\, music\, visual arts\, design and digital media. \n\n\n\nEducation offers incredible potential for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies\, with several significant opportunities — and challenges — that the introduction of artificial intelligence could bring\, especially to higher education. Increasingly\, higher education institutions\, as well as adult and professional learning are being transformed by intelligent systems that are helping humans learn better and achieve their learning objectives. The breadth of areas in which AI is already inserted in education includes intelligent tutors or chatbots\, personalized learning\, smart teaching\, learning analytics\, reducing student drop-off\, education administration\, data privacy and ethics.  A balanced relation between Artificial and Human intelligence can create trusted\, flexible\, personalized and inclusive digital learning eco-systems. \n\n\n\n\nThe EDEN 2020 Conference will focus on contemporary educational concepts\, leading practice\, approaches and tools which help to enhance the innovative power of cutting-edge digital solutions\, and integrating the synergetic effects of arts\, the human and social dimension. \n\n\n\n\nPhD Symposium Timisoara 2020\n\n\n\nThe EDEN 2020 PhD Symposium Timisoara will be organized on 21 June 2020. \n\n\n\nThe Symposium\, held in previous years in Barcelona (2018)\, Bruges (2019) and Dublin (2019)\, has been designed to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge among doctoral students doing research in the area of technology enhanced online\, digital\, open and distance learning\, providing a valuable forum for the advancement of doctoral research. The Symposium is led by a panel of international experts. \n\n\n\nMore information about EDEN PhD Symposium is here. \n\n\n\nTimisoara European Capital of Culture 2021\n\n\n\nThe Conference will significantly benefit from the recognized cultural and digital  environment that the city of Timisoara offers\, as it celebrates creativity and innovation as the 2021 European Capital of Culture. \n\n\n\nPolitehnica100 – 100 years of higher education in Banat\n\n\n\nPolitehnica University of Timisoara celebrates in 2020 its first century of academic excellence. Established in November 1920\, shortly after Romania’s Unification\, through the Decree signed by King Ferdinand\, it is the first higher education institution in West Romania\, in Banat region. As Timisoara became a university city\, it started growing and its attractiveness for all kinds of investments increased\, but still keeping the young and innovative spirit and promoting its image of avant-garde in Romanian and European science. \n\n\n\nOpen University UK 50\n\n\n\nDuring the conference\, we would like to pay tribute to the flagship open university of Europe\, EDEN’s founding member and birthplace\, the Open University UK. The OU celebrates its 50th Anniversary and has been playing in partnership with EDEN leading role in developing the impact of the European open and distance learning conferences since 1992. \n\n\n\nMicro-credentialing in European Higher Education\n\n\n\nAligned to the themes of the conference\, the final symposium of the Erasmus+ MicroHE initiative will focus on Micro-credentialing. In order to make micro-credentials a pillar of university service\, the project has been working on the impact of modularisation\, including the first European survey on micro-credentials in HE\, proposing a meta-data standard and launching an online clearinghouse to facilitate recognition\, transfer and portability of micro-credentials in Europe. \n\n\n\nDigitalCulture\n\n\n\nTo highlight the digital culture aspect of the conference a special section will be dedicated to digital education for the creative industries\, as part of the Erasmus+ DigiCulture project for improving the digital competences and social inclusion of adults in creative industries. The ‘Digital Skills for Creative Industries and Culture Courses’\, as a blended learning and online courses (MOOCs) and the achievement of Open Badges for Digital Competences indicates the important role the digital education has for the creative industries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Proceedings and Book of Abstracts:\n\n\n\nWe are pleased to announce that the Electronic Conference Proceedings (ISSN 2707-2819) and the Short Paper Book (Human and Artificial Intelligence for the Society of the Future – Inspiring Digital Education for the Next STE(A)M Student Generation\, ISBN 978-615-5511-28-8) are available online.

SUMMARY:Unboxing the Textbook for an Open World
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentation \nPresentation & panel discussion\nDescription: \nThe textbook is an enduring staple of higher education\, occupying a key role in formal educational settings. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover\, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large\, often expensive\, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover\, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley\, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? To help “unbox” the book\, this panel seeks to explore students’ use (and non-use) of textbooks for learning in higher education; what alternatives might exist; and to try and envisage textbooks and educational resources in a more open future. \nReferences: \nWiley\, D. SUMMARY:Open Education Recognition and Credentials
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nFor flexible\, open and online education to become reality\, it is vital to increase trust in recognition and credentials through robust and reliable solutions. In Europe\, we already have standards and tools that can be used to transparently describe qualifications. The European Qualifications Framework gives an indication of the level of various qualifications; the European Diploma Supplement provides a standardised template to give additional information about a degree; the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows for individual learning units to be described in terms of knowledge\, skills\, responsibility and autonomy; the European Skill\, Competences\, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) database provides a standard terminology. However\, while theoretically these same tools could be used to describe virtual mobility and open education\, there is a long way to go until open education modules are treated the same way as their traditional counterparts. \nThis webinar will provide a deeper analysis of this challenge and introduce a few European initiatives\, such as the new Europass\, MicroHE\, ECCOE and more\, that aim to facilitate the recognition of open\, online and flexible higher education and increase trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. \nModerator: Deborah Arnold\, AUNEGe\, EDEN Senior Fellow \nPresenters: \nDeborah Arnold\nNational and International Projects Coordinator\, AUNEGe\, France \n  \nFormerly Digital Strategy and Communication Officer in the Directorate for Digital Affairs at the University of Burgundy\, and Manager of the Learning Technology and Distance Education unit\, Deborah has nearly 20 years’ experience in European projects. SUMMARY:Open Education for Civil Engagement and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nOpen education has a key role to play in potentiating social inclusion. As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity\, freedom\, democracy\, equality\, the rule of law\, respect for human rights\, the rights of minorities. However\, as also noted\, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion\, namely: populism\, xenophobia\, divisive nationalism\, discrimination\, misinformation\, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism). \nIn order to counter these problems\, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However\, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need\, therefore\, to teach and support students\, especially the younger generations\, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In this webinar different aspects and examples of the role of open educational resources and practices for citizenship education will be considered and how they can be potentiated in the future. \nModerator: Timothy Read\, UNED\, EDEN Vice-president \nPresenters: \nAlfredo Soeiro\nEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,\nUniversity of Porto\, Portugal \nDegrees in Civil Engineering (U. SUMMARY:Designing inclusive and engaging structures to facilitate creativity and learning
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording \nDescription\nThis talk explores three principles for inclusive innovation and describes three research and development projects through which these principles have been developed and applied. Rather than seeing the need to be accessible to all as a barrier to innovation\, innovation in educational projects can be at its most effective when the goals and processes are inclusive. \nThe projects described all aimed to create novel and inclusive systems through which people engage and learn. This is achieved through 1) Starting with the audiences who face challenges and then find opportunities to innovate for all; 2) Exploring simple\, novel ways to get people to be creative to open up new ways of thinking and participation; and 3) Considering accessibility from the beginning of the process\, to create results that are both innovative and inclusive. \nThe projects are: \n\nOut There and In Here\, which developed new forms of collaborative activities at a distance\, inspired by work to make fieldwork accessible to learners with physical disabilities;\nArtMaps\, which developed a platform for members of the public to create interpretations of the locational relevance of items in a museum collection; and\nOur Journey\, which provides a simple and engaging structure for learners to represent their study journeys.\n\nYou will meet\nTim Coughlan \nTim Coughlan is a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University\, UK. His research crosses the areas of Education and Human-Computer Interaction and is particularly focused on the design and evaluation of systems that support inclusion\, creativity\, and openness in learning. \nCurrent and recent research projects include designing tools for the representation of challenges and achievements in study journeys (Our Journey)\, improving support in online and open education for disabled students (ADMINS\, Ed-ICT\, Open Learning and Accessibility)\, and teaching community-led design practices through online courses (Empowering Design Practices). \nProfile: https://iet.open.ac.uk/people/tim.coughlan

SUMMARY:Are Automatic Transcriptions Good Enough for Accessibility?
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nIn this webinar Dr Tharindu Liyanagunawardena will talk about her research\, Automatic Transcription Software: Good Enough for Accessibility? A case study from built environment education\, which was awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the 28th EDEN annual conference\, Bruges\, Belgium 16-19 June 2019. \nThe increasing use of multimedia in learning resources in higher education poses a challenge for learners with hearing disabilities\, unless these are accompanied by transcripts or captions. Accessibility has gained centre stage in the UK recently with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018\, enforcement of EU directive on accessibility becoming the law. \nThis paper reports on a small study where six Automatic Transcription Software (ATS) were analysed for their accuracy. If you are interested in accessibility\, practical uses of available technologies and how they make a difference to students’ learning this will be a useful session for you. \nQuestions to consider\n\nHow effective are current ATS providers?\nCould transcripts have other benefits for students?\nAre we considering ‘accessibility’ broadly enough?\n\nYou will meet\nTharindu Liyanagunawardena \nLearning Technology Researcher and the Chair of the Online Learning Research Centre at the University College of Estate Management\, United Kingdom. Tharindu’s principal research interests lie in the area of social implications of information and communication technologies\, especially eLearning. \nTwitter: @Tharindu__ \nEmail: tharindu@ucem.ac.uk \nWendy Chowne \nSenior Lecturer & Undergraduate Programmes Director for The London Institute of Banking & Finance\, United Kingdom.  With a keen interest in the student experience and quality of teaching and learning Wendy is delighted to be able to consider the impact of Tharindu’s research in more depth.  She is a member of the EDEN NAP Steering committee. \nTwitter: @WendyChowne1 \nEmail: wchowne@libf.ac.uk \nAlastair Creelman \nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. SUMMARY:Quality in e-learning
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nThe rise of open online learning and e-learning poses more than ever quality-relevant questions. The development where learners take personal responsibility for their own learning is only one of the issues when quality is discussed\, another problem is when quality is expressed as norm-based versus process-based. \nIn view of the global challenges associated with education\, there is an urgent need to redefine quality issues. The quality of e-learning is a constant debate and discussion. Quality in this respect is complex and can either be easily defined or must be elaborated to a high and deep degree. There may be more questions than answers. First\, the five most frequently asked questions have to be answered. What do we mean by quality? Why is it important? Who’s involved? Quality for whom? When should quality be measured? In addition\, the quality can be seen at various levels: nano\, micro\, meso\, macro. \nThe webinar will address the current discourse and quality issues in open flexible online learning\, including e-learning. \nYou will meet\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson \n\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson is an independent researcher\, expert\, quality assessor and influencer in the fields of open online flexible\, distance learning\, including e-learning TEL\, OER and MOOCs. Her focus is on quality\, innovation\, leadership\, and personal\, learning. She is in EDEN EC\, Chair the EDEN SIG for TEL and quality enhancement\, EDEN Fellow\, and EDEN Council of Fellows. She is in the ICDE EC\, and Chair the ICDE Advocacy Committee\, for the worldwide advocacy of OER. Ossiannilsson is a quality expert and reviewer for ICDE\, and the EADTU\, and an evaluator and expert for the European Commission. She works with the Swedish Institute of Standards and ISO. She is a member of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition Sweden. Ossiannilsson is VP of the Swedish Association for Distance Education. Ossiannilsson holds her PhD from Oulu University\, Finland\, with a dissertation on benchmarking e-learning in higher education. She led the ICDE’s quality standard study in 2014-2015.
