SUMMARY:AI and Understanding Learning
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Recording \nDescription\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) has become more relevant in the last years in the education and training landscape. AI may be characterized as started with machine learning (ML) as a path to humanlike intelligence. ML can treat an ocean of data with data mining techniques\, data analytics and other similar approaches. And forms of AI have been developed\, based on ML\, with algorithms for vision\, speech recognition\, reasoning\, navigation\, etc.. Most of these approaches have been used in education and training. The reasoning and decision making associated with AI are the main advances that can help understanding the effectiveness of teaching and of training. Assessment of learning is fundamental to improve teaching and training. Learning is a personal and individual action and AI\, as an outsider and independent procedure\, may help the assessment of acquisition of learning. The webinar addresses some experiences and projects that may bring some food for thought as possibilities for research. The topics to address are: \n\nTime to assess learning outcomes in e-learning: aligning assessment methods with the diverse set of learning outcomes project\, University of Porto\, Portugal.\nArtificial Intelligence and Assessment: In AI assessment\, a software system infers problem-specific rules for automated scoring from examples of instructor grading of student assignments\, Teaching Commons\, University of Stanford\, USA.\nKey messages on AI in Education\, Working Group on Learning\, Teaching and Assessment\, European Commission.\nChinese school using facial recognition to analyze students’ emotions: Techspot report on how identifying emotions from students with AI may improve learning. SUMMARY:Unboxing the Textbook for an Open World
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentation \nPresentation & panel discussion\nDescription: \nThe textbook is an enduring staple of higher education\, occupying a key role in formal educational settings. Practices may vary greatly in educational settings as to how the costs of textbooks are borne by students. Moreover\, the role and nature of the textbook are changing rapidly in a digital world. Large\, often expensive\, paper books exist alongside digital versions which may include rich media and interactivity. The interactive elements of digital textbooks may also comprise assessments that can be summative or formative. Publishers may charge rental subscriptions for books which may be passed directly onto students increasing the costs of their education. Moreover\, these rentals are temporary. Students do not get to “Retain” access to the learning resource – the right to retain being one of the key five Rs of Open (Wiley\, 2014). How can we help unpack these issues and explore alternatives such as more open approaches? To help “unbox” the book\, this panel seeks to explore students’ use (and non-use) of textbooks for learning in higher education; what alternatives might exist; and to try and envisage textbooks and educational resources in a more open future. \nReferences: \nWiley\, D. SUMMARY:Open Education Recognition and Credentials
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nFor flexible\, open and online education to become reality\, it is vital to increase trust in recognition and credentials through robust and reliable solutions. In Europe\, we already have standards and tools that can be used to transparently describe qualifications. The European Qualifications Framework gives an indication of the level of various qualifications; the European Diploma Supplement provides a standardised template to give additional information about a degree; the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) allows for individual learning units to be described in terms of knowledge\, skills\, responsibility and autonomy; the European Skill\, Competences\, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) database provides a standard terminology. However\, while theoretically these same tools could be used to describe virtual mobility and open education\, there is a long way to go until open education modules are treated the same way as their traditional counterparts. \nThis webinar will provide a deeper analysis of this challenge and introduce a few European initiatives\, such as the new Europass\, MicroHE\, ECCOE and more\, that aim to facilitate the recognition of open\, online and flexible higher education and increase trust in technology-enabled credentials among students\, higher education institutions (HEIs) and employers. \nModerator: Deborah Arnold\, AUNEGe\, EDEN Senior Fellow \nPresenters: \nDeborah Arnold\nNational and International Projects Coordinator\, AUNEGe\, France \n  \nFormerly Digital Strategy and Communication Officer in the Directorate for Digital Affairs at the University of Burgundy\, and Manager of the Learning Technology and Distance Education unit\, Deborah has nearly 20 years’ experience in European projects. SUMMARY:Open Education for Civil Engagement and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nOpen education has a key role to play in potentiating social inclusion. As noted by the European Commission for education in general (but is particularly relevant for open education) it helps to establish common values key to such inclusion: human dignity\, freedom\, democracy\, equality\, the rule of law\, respect for human rights\, the rights of minorities. However\, as also noted\, it can be seen in most member states that there are challenges to such inclusion\, namely: populism\, xenophobia\, divisive nationalism\, discrimination\, misinformation\, and radicalization (that can lead to violent extremism). \nIn order to counter these problems\, the promotion of citizenship education has been pursued over a period of years. However\, the open educational content and practices necessary to teach the different paradigms of active citizenship are arguably still difficult to find. The need to respect cultural diversity is important in the educational process since there isn’t just one “model citizen”. We need\, therefore\, to teach and support students\, especially the younger generations\, to appreciate the importance of active citizenship and achieve their participative role in society as a whole. In this webinar different aspects and examples of the role of open educational resources and practices for citizenship education will be considered and how they can be potentiated in the future. \nModerator: Timothy Read\, UNED\, EDEN Vice-president \nPresenters: \nAlfredo Soeiro\nEDEN Executive Committee member\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, EDEN Senior Fellow\,\nUniversity of Porto\, Portugal \nDegrees in Civil Engineering (U. SUMMARY:Open Education Technologies
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nThe world is changing towards a more inclusive and interconnected global marketplace\, where technology is playing an intensive role. Education actively responds to these changes by including more and more open education principles\, quite often using diverse technologies to achieve so. Those institutions that enhance their traditional teaching environments with best digital educational technologies will give their students\, in turn\, the best chances to succeed. Students who have access to digital learning environments at their educational institutions will have increased skills and knowledge to achieve and they will become Open lifelong learning students. There exists a rich ecosystem of open educational technologies (OET) created by educational\, open source\, and commercial organizations around the world. Open Educational Technologies (Open EdTech) is a diverse group of organisations\, open source projects\, and individuals advocating for the use of open technologies\, content\, and standards in education. SUMMARY:OER and Open Pedagogies - Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Recording View the Presentations \nPresentations & panel discussion\nDescription: \nAim of this webinar is to show examples of good practice of use of Open Education Resources (OER) in teaching and learning. Open Education Resources and Open Education Movement are high on the agenda in EU but also worldwide\, yet teachers and educators are struggling when talking about OER\, how to use them or to make their own materials open. Another issue is how to integrate OER in teaching in the learning process. Open pedagogy is a set of teaching and learning practices only possible or practical when using OER. Open education practice encompasses teaching techniques and academic practices that draw on open technologies\, pedagogical approaches and open educational resources to facilitate collaborative and flexible learning. Join us and get ideas on how you can implement OER in your teaching and learning. \nModerator: Sandra Kučina Softić\, EDEN President\, SRCE \nPresenters: \nGema Santos\nOpen University of Catalonia (UOC)\nOpen learning at UOC Knowledge Action Plan \nGema holds a PhD in Information Science and Communication. SUMMARY:Designing inclusive and engaging structures to facilitate creativity and learning
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording \nDescription\nThis talk explores three principles for inclusive innovation and describes three research and development projects through which these principles have been developed and applied. Rather than seeing the need to be accessible to all as a barrier to innovation\, innovation in educational projects can be at its most effective when the goals and processes are inclusive. \nThe projects described all aimed to create novel and inclusive systems through which people engage and learn. This is achieved through 1) Starting with the audiences who face challenges and then find opportunities to innovate for all; 2) Exploring simple\, novel ways to get people to be creative to open up new ways of thinking and participation; and 3) Considering accessibility from the beginning of the process\, to create results that are both innovative and inclusive. \nThe projects are: \n\nOut There and In Here\, which developed new forms of collaborative activities at a distance\, inspired by work to make fieldwork accessible to learners with physical disabilities;\nArtMaps\, which developed a platform for members of the public to create interpretations of the locational relevance of items in a museum collection; and\nOur Journey\, which provides a simple and engaging structure for learners to represent their study journeys.\n\nYou will meet\nTim Coughlan \nTim Coughlan is a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University\, UK. His research crosses the areas of Education and Human-Computer Interaction and is particularly focused on the design and evaluation of systems that support inclusion\, creativity\, and openness in learning. \nCurrent and recent research projects include designing tools for the representation of challenges and achievements in study journeys (Our Journey)\, improving support in online and open education for disabled students (ADMINS\, Ed-ICT\, Open Learning and Accessibility)\, and teaching community-led design practices through online courses (Empowering Design Practices). \nProfile: https://iet.open.ac.uk/people/tim.coughlan

SUMMARY:Are Automatic Transcriptions Good Enough for Accessibility?
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nIn this webinar Dr Tharindu Liyanagunawardena will talk about her research\, Automatic Transcription Software: Good Enough for Accessibility? A case study from built environment education\, which was awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the 28th EDEN annual conference\, Bruges\, Belgium 16-19 June 2019. \nThe increasing use of multimedia in learning resources in higher education poses a challenge for learners with hearing disabilities\, unless these are accompanied by transcripts or captions. Accessibility has gained centre stage in the UK recently with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018\, enforcement of EU directive on accessibility becoming the law. \nThis paper reports on a small study where six Automatic Transcription Software (ATS) were analysed for their accuracy. If you are interested in accessibility\, practical uses of available technologies and how they make a difference to students’ learning this will be a useful session for you. \nQuestions to consider\n\nHow effective are current ATS providers?\nCould transcripts have other benefits for students?\nAre we considering ‘accessibility’ broadly enough?\n\nYou will meet\nTharindu Liyanagunawardena \nLearning Technology Researcher and the Chair of the Online Learning Research Centre at the University College of Estate Management\, United Kingdom. Tharindu’s principal research interests lie in the area of social implications of information and communication technologies\, especially eLearning. \nTwitter: @Tharindu__ \nEmail: tharindu@ucem.ac.uk \nWendy Chowne \nSenior Lecturer & Undergraduate Programmes Director for The London Institute of Banking & Finance\, United Kingdom.  With a keen interest in the student experience and quality of teaching and learning Wendy is delighted to be able to consider the impact of Tharindu’s research in more depth.  She is a member of the EDEN NAP Steering committee. \nTwitter: @WendyChowne1 \nEmail: wchowne@libf.ac.uk \nAlastair Creelman \nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. SUMMARY:Quality in e-learning
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nThe rise of open online learning and e-learning poses more than ever quality-relevant questions. The development where learners take personal responsibility for their own learning is only one of the issues when quality is discussed\, another problem is when quality is expressed as norm-based versus process-based. \nIn view of the global challenges associated with education\, there is an urgent need to redefine quality issues. The quality of e-learning is a constant debate and discussion. Quality in this respect is complex and can either be easily defined or must be elaborated to a high and deep degree. There may be more questions than answers. First\, the five most frequently asked questions have to be answered. What do we mean by quality? Why is it important? Who’s involved? Quality for whom? When should quality be measured? In addition\, the quality can be seen at various levels: nano\, micro\, meso\, macro. \nThe webinar will address the current discourse and quality issues in open flexible online learning\, including e-learning. \nYou will meet\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson \n\nProfessor Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson is an independent researcher\, expert\, quality assessor and influencer in the fields of open online flexible\, distance learning\, including e-learning TEL\, OER and MOOCs. Her focus is on quality\, innovation\, leadership\, and personal\, learning. She is in EDEN EC\, Chair the EDEN SIG for TEL and quality enhancement\, EDEN Fellow\, and EDEN Council of Fellows. She is in the ICDE EC\, and Chair the ICDE Advocacy Committee\, for the worldwide advocacy of OER. Ossiannilsson is a quality expert and reviewer for ICDE\, and the EADTU\, and an evaluator and expert for the European Commission. She works with the Swedish Institute of Standards and ISO. She is a member of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition Sweden. Ossiannilsson is VP of the Swedish Association for Distance Education. Ossiannilsson holds her PhD from Oulu University\, Finland\, with a dissertation on benchmarking e-learning in higher education. She led the ICDE’s quality standard study in 2014-2015. SUMMARY:What might the future hold for distance education universities?
DESCRIPTION:watch the recording\nFormat: Presentation with discussion \nDescription:  In this webinar four experts in the field of e-learning and distance education will reflect upon how the very nature of learning at a distance is changing to meet the needs of the modern society\, reductions in expenditure in higher education\, the incursion of face-to-face universities in this area\, changes in institutional structure\, and the ever-advancing role of technology. Historically\, distance education institutions stood apart from their face-to-face rivals with educational models that were very different\, reflecting a variety of types of students. Nowadays\, with the pace of modern society and the need for constant updating of our knowledge and qualifications\, the demand for e-learning and distance education has increased. However\, traditional face-to-face universities have extended their educational offer to try to meet this demand\, arguably blurring the difference between the two types of institutions. This convergence together with the corresponding expansion of technology-enhanced learning and reductions in funding is arguably leaving distance education universities in a state of crisis. The webinar explores the issues related to this crisis and looks at what the future might hold for this educational modality and the institutions that champion it! SUMMARY:Why is digital learning relevant for curriculum transformation in Higher Education?
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording\nFormat: Panel discussion \nDescription: Digital learning opened new ways for society members to start early careers on a global scale\, but also to seek for the possibilities to re-enter HE at different stages of life\, to seek for (re-) qualification in a variety of ways. Digital and network society is the new target group of HE\, which learns in new\, timeless and borderless spaces. Such society members are always connected and online\, sharing and co-creating knowledge\, developing and co-authoring innovations themselves\, and they may serve as the biggest driving force for HE\, but also quite a high challenge to deal with. Digital education\, teaching\, learning and assessment seems to be a good solution for the transformation of HE curriculum\, and many HE institutions already found their ways. But why this is again a growing issue? Why does digitalization continue raising many challenges for HE institutions? SUMMARY:Widening access to open education - the way forward. What the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us
DESCRIPTION:Widening access to open education – the way forward\nWhat the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us\nwebinar Recording \nDescription\nThe ideas and practices that underlie open education have been around for a very long time. Given the promise of such a democratic approach to teaching and learning it is perhaps surprising that it is not more widely used. When Massive Online Open Courses (or MOOCs) appeared on the public radar around 2012 they looked a game-changer\, something that could\, once and for all\, change the role of open education and its importance in the educational landscape. However\, seven years later\, while there is a wide range of these courses available\, little change has taken place in the widespread adoption of open education. \nAs a result of the research undertaken in the MOONLITE project\, and different and varied interchanges of ideas\, debates\, and collaborations with other academics and experts in the field of open education and social inclusion\, it has been possible to identify seven key challenges\, that we believe still need to be addressed to take open education to the next level. Namely: \n\nimproving access to MOOCs and open education;\nkeeping MOOCs open and free;\nthe need for support in inclusive MOOCs;\ndesigning and developing MOOCs for social inclusion;\nthe recognition of prior learning and MOOC certification;\nthe need for open education policies at national and international levels;\nnew funding and business models.\n\nIn this webinar we will present and discuss these challenges and consider how to widen access to open education. \nQuestions to consider\n\nIf education is a basic human right then why is so much knowledge / educational content locked away in not-for-free sources?\nOpen education\, in the sense of resources and practices\, seems to offer a solution to the access problem. So why is it not more widely used or appreciated?\nAre MOOCs the educational panacea they were once thought to be\, or just another step on the evolutionary ladder toward next-generation teaching and learning\, being inevitably forgotten and overlooked with time?\n\nParticipation and privacy\nThis webinar will feature small group discussions so please make sure you have a web camera and headset activated before you join the meeting. The main part of the webinar will be recorded but not the group discussions. Your name will not be visible in the recording\, neither will the chat session. \nYou will meet\nTimothy Read is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED\, Spain. He has held a range of positions in the university government at UNED and is currently Pro-Vice Chancellor of Methodology and Technology. He is an EDEN Fellow and also the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and is currently working in European and nationally funded projects in the area of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and massive open online courses for languages (LMOOCs). \n  \n  \nAlastair Creelman \nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. He is involved in several national and international projects and organisations in the field of e-learning\, including the MOONLITE project. SUMMARY:2019 Athens
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to jointly organise the conference Creating Conditions for Deeper Learning in Science was received from Ellinogermaniki Agogi as an event of the Open Classroom Conference (OCC) series. In the field of learning innovation our Greek partners\, especially our long term friend Ellinogermaniki Agogi\, always played a pioneering role by organising the Open Classroom Conference Series. EDEN was aiming at giving support to this highly valuable initiative.\nThe conference brought together researchers\, practitioners and decision-makers from all around the world to investigate the concepts of Deeper Learning\, the conditions under which it could lead students to develop mastery in scientific subjects and the methods how these achievements can be assessed. \nContributions centred around Deeper Learning defined as a set of competencies or educational objectives and to characterize a way of learning (or a process) that promotes these competencies (mastering core academic content\, thinking critically and solving complex problems\, working collaboratively\, communicating effectively\, learning how to learn\, developing academic mindset). The focus was widened considering that training in science using arts has been shown to improve creativity and innovation as well as students’ Deeper Learning. \nThe programme of the conference contained 6 keynote speeches\, 5 workshops\, 1 symposium\, 1 round table discussion and 22 papers. EA organised a presentation of the results of the Stories of Tomorrow project Mars colonies – Lego-robots\, e-book demonstration and a theatre play involving the concerned K-12 students and their teachers\, besides the iMuSiCA VR demonstrations. \nEDEN supported communication and organisational issues. The Network was represented by Ferenc Tatrai\, Senior Advisor as a speaker addressing the conference in the name of Sandra Kucina Softic\, EDEN President. Ferenc also held a presentation entitled “Learning Innovation & Professional Communities” highlighting EDEN’s contribution to the educational innovation processes of the European Union. One-quarter of the around 100 participants were EDEN members. Besides the most populated Greek delegation\, the number of German\, Swiss and US participants was remarkable. 34 Tweets were posted about the 2-day event at EDEN Twitter account. \n\nThe conference also served as the final conference of the STORIES OF TOMORROW project. The conference was further supported by the projects iMuSciCA\, eCraft2Learn and weDRAW. The aforementioned projects have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. EDEN is supported by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union. \nYou can browse photos and tweets from the conference. \nYou can download the Proceedings of the Deeper Learning EDEN Open Classroom Conference 2019: Creating Conditions for Deeper Learning in Science\, using the following link. \nFor more information visit the Conference website.

SUMMARY:Possible use of a portfolio as European Development
DESCRIPTION:“Possible use of a portfolio as European Development” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 5 June 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Alfredo Soeiro\, Deputy Chair of the NAP Steering Committee\, from the University of Porto\, Portugal in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nWatch the recording \nE-portfolios can be understood as a digital dynamic tool that enables individuals to document\, display and manage their skills\, qualifications and experience throughout the lifespan of their career. e-portfolios help individuals be reflective\, support their personal development\, allow them to showcase their skills\, qualifications and experience\, and enable (self-) assessment of their skills. The new Europass framework adopted the approach of web-based tools to support individuals in documenting and describing their competences and qualifications acquired through learning and non-formal and informal learning. The Europass e-portfolio may build on the current Europass Online. Users may use the Europass e-portfolio to document and describe their personal information\, and to manage careers and lifelong learning.
