SUMMARY:Widening access to open education - the way forward. What the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us
DESCRIPTION:Widening access to open education – the way forward\nWhat the MOONLITE project (2016-2019) has shown us\nwebinar Recording \nDescription\nThe ideas and practices that underlie open education have been around for a very long time. Given the promise of such a democratic approach to teaching and learning it is perhaps surprising that it is not more widely used. When Massive Online Open Courses (or MOOCs) appeared on the public radar around 2012 they looked a game-changer\, something that could\, once and for all\, change the role of open education and its importance in the educational landscape. However\, seven years later\, while there is a wide range of these courses available\, little change has taken place in the widespread adoption of open education. \nAs a result of the research undertaken in the MOONLITE project\, and different and varied interchanges of ideas\, debates\, and collaborations with other academics and experts in the field of open education and social inclusion\, it has been possible to identify seven key challenges\, that we believe still need to be addressed to take open education to the next level. Namely: \n\nimproving access to MOOCs and open education;\nkeeping MOOCs open and free;\nthe need for support in inclusive MOOCs;\ndesigning and developing MOOCs for social inclusion;\nthe recognition of prior learning and MOOC certification;\nthe need for open education policies at national and international levels;\nnew funding and business models.\n\nIn this webinar we will present and discuss these challenges and consider how to widen access to open education. \nQuestions to consider\n\nIf education is a basic human right then why is so much knowledge / educational content locked away in not-for-free sources?\nOpen education\, in the sense of resources and practices\, seems to offer a solution to the access problem. So why is it not more widely used or appreciated?\nAre MOOCs the educational panacea they were once thought to be\, or just another step on the evolutionary ladder toward next-generation teaching and learning\, being inevitably forgotten and overlooked with time?\n\nParticipation and privacy\nThis webinar will feature small group discussions so please make sure you have a web camera and headset activated before you join the meeting. The main part of the webinar will be recorded but not the group discussions. Your name will not be visible in the recording\, neither will the chat session. \nYou will meet\nTimothy Read is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED\, Spain. He has held a range of positions in the university government at UNED and is currently Pro-Vice Chancellor of Methodology and Technology. He is an EDEN Fellow and also the co-founder of the ATLAS research group and is currently working in European and nationally funded projects in the area of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and massive open online courses for languages (LMOOCs). \n  \n  \nAlastair Creelman \nE-learning specialist at Linnaeus University\, Kalmar\, Sweden. He is involved in several national and international projects and organisations in the field of e-learning\, including the MOONLITE project. He is and EDEN fellow and member of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee. \nTwitter: @alacre \nBlog: Corridor of uncertainty – reflections on technology and education

SUMMARY:2019 Athens
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to jointly organise the conference Creating Conditions for Deeper Learning in Science was received from Ellinogermaniki Agogi as an event of the Open Classroom Conference (OCC) series. In the field of learning innovation our Greek partners\, especially our long term friend Ellinogermaniki Agogi\, always played a pioneering role by organising the Open Classroom Conference Series. EDEN was aiming at giving support to this highly valuable initiative.\nThe conference brought together researchers\, practitioners and decision-makers from all around the world to investigate the concepts of Deeper Learning\, the conditions under which it could lead students to develop mastery in scientific subjects and the methods how these achievements can be assessed. \nContributions centred around Deeper Learning defined as a set of competencies or educational objectives and to characterize a way of learning (or a process) that promotes these competencies (mastering core academic content\, thinking critically and solving complex problems\, working collaboratively\, communicating effectively\, learning how to learn\, developing academic mindset). The focus was widened considering that training in science using arts has been shown to improve creativity and innovation as well as students’ Deeper Learning. \nThe programme of the conference contained 6 keynote speeches\, 5 workshops\, 1 symposium\, 1 round table discussion and 22 papers. EA organised a presentation of the results of the Stories of Tomorrow project Mars colonies – Lego-robots\, e-book demonstration and a theatre play involving the concerned K-12 students and their teachers\, besides the iMuSiCA VR demonstrations. \nEDEN supported communication and organisational issues. The Network was represented by Ferenc Tatrai\, Senior Advisor as a speaker addressing the conference in the name of Sandra Kucina Softic\, EDEN President. Ferenc also held a presentation entitled “Learning Innovation & Professional Communities” highlighting EDEN’s contribution to the educational innovation processes of the European Union. One-quarter of the around 100 participants were EDEN members. Besides the most populated Greek delegation\, the number of German\, Swiss and US participants was remarkable. 34 Tweets were posted about the 2-day event at EDEN Twitter account. \n\nThe conference also served as the final conference of the STORIES OF TOMORROW project. The conference was further supported by the projects iMuSciCA\, eCraft2Learn and weDRAW. The aforementioned projects have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. EDEN is supported by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union. \nYou can browse photos and tweets from the conference. \nYou can download the Proceedings of the Deeper Learning EDEN Open Classroom Conference 2019: Creating Conditions for Deeper Learning in Science\, using the following link. \nFor more information visit the Conference website.

SUMMARY:Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case
DESCRIPTION:The “Assessing OERs quality – the Open VM mini-MOOC case” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 3 April 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Francesca Amenduni from the University of Foggia and Roma TRE University\, Italy in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nRegister for the webinar \nIn the context of Open Education\, quality assessment tools are necessary. Speaking of  quality means quality assurance\, quality audit and quality enhancement. In the Open Virtual Mobilty Erasmus + Project’s framework https://www.openvirtualmobility.eu/es_ES/\, the quality assurance of OER is addressed through an iterative cycle of design\, creation\, implementation\, and assessment\, following the Design Based Research model (Barab & Squire\, 2004). \nAtenas and Havemann (2014) list a series of actions to identify resources to be taken into consideration such as choose resources already valued as high quality by peers\, start a community discussion on a specific resource\, use resources where keywords and metadata are clearly identified. In order to assess  each OER to include in the VM MOOC\, partners of the IO6 developed a tool structured in three main indicators (Poce\, Agrusti & Re 2015): 1. Quality; 2. Appropriateness; 3. Technical aspects. The webinar will present best practices developed in the Erasmus + Project OpenVM to search\, select and assess OERs. In addition\, the preliminary results of the pre-pilot phase will be presented. \nAtenas\, J.\, & Havemann\, L. (2014). Questions of quality in repositories of open educational resources: a literature review. Research in Learning Technology\, 22\, 20889.\nBarab\, S.\, & Squire\, K. (2004). Design-based research: Putting a stake in the ground. The journal of the learning sciences\, 13(1)\, 1-14.\nPoce\, A.\, Agrusti\, F.\, & Re\, M. R. (2015). SUMMARY:Evaluation in distance education @ VIVES: some tools and trends
DESCRIPTION:The “Evaluation in distance education @ VIVES: some tools and trends” webinar will take place on Wednesday\, 20 March 2019 at 15:30 CET with Koen Verhulst and Hendrik Coucke from VIVES University of Applied Sciences\, Belgium in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room. \nWatch the recording \nWith approximately 13 000 students\, VIVES is one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Flanders\, Belgium. VIVES has been the leader in Flanders when it comes to distance learning for more than 20 years. The university offers 13 programmes and more than 20 specializations through distance learning. In all\, more than 2 000 students follow a distance-learning programme to obtain their bachelor’s degree. \nMost of the students in distance education combine their studies with work and care for their family. To facilitate their study\, VIVES has chosen to implement\, among other things\, different assessment and organisation tools. During this session\, different tools in order to enhance the flexibility for the students concerning evaluation and assessment will be presented. \n\nHendrik Coucke started at VIVES as a lecturer mathematics in 2004 in teacher training for the bachelor primary education program. Besides teaching\, he is also an educational technologist to support teachers in the use of educational technology in their teaching practice. He is currently part of the VIVES Educational Technology team\, part of the Department of Educational Policy\, which gives concrete form to the vision on educational technology for the entire university of applied sciences. From the latter position he started to specialise himself more and more in digital tools\, including specifically the Edumatic assessment tool\, which has now become assessmentQ. \nKoen Verhulst is working at VIVES since 2000\, originally as a teacher ICT and multimedia in teacher training for the bachelor primary education program. He has been working at the Education Policy Department since 2014. The goal in 2014 was to increase the flexibility for distance learning students by establishing the examination centre\, together with the development of square and implementing ProctorExam as a tool for remote examinations. His role in this was mainly to design and develop the square tool. Today he is responsible for the management of square\, in addition to the management of a number of other tools.

Educators will increasingly find themselves in an environment in which there is an overload of information\, and so their tasks will\, among other things\, move to evaluating information effectively\, selecting teaching content wisely and helping learners to cope with information of different value and reliability. The Council of the EU recently acknowledged that\, together with literacy and numeracy\, a digital competence is crucial for accessing and progressing in the labour market and engaging in further education and training. In a changing world and a more unpredictable future\, lifelong learning is becoming a central element in people’s lives\, and digital learning is in many cases already making this more accessible\, flexible and cheaper. As open education models grow in prominence\, efforts should move towards making teacher-developed content and materials more widely available. Join us in the discussion on future of education in next decade. \nSpeakers: \n\nAirina Volungevičienė\, EDEN president\, Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania – What does it mean to open up education? Lessons learnt and challenges raised\nMorten Flate Paulsen\, EDEN Senior Fellow\, ICDE – Open leadership. Mapping and tracking global initiatives\nSvetlana Knyazeva\, EDEN Fellow\, UNESCO IITE – Openness of education: Urgent need for recognizing OER-based learning outcomes in Europe and worldwide\nKatrien Bardoel\, NUFFIC – e-Valuate Effective Policies for Recognition of New Forms of Online Learning\nPaul Bacsich\, EDEN Fellow\, Matic Media Ltd and Sero Consulting Ltd – Do we have a business model for openness in Europe?\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:The story of the Open University in Europe and the world
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion\nWatch the recording \nModerator: Mark Brown\, EDEN EC member\, EDEN Fellow\, Dublin City University\, Ireland \nDescription: \nThe Open University has a long tradition and this webinar brings together four distinguished speakers who will share their reflections on following questions: \n\nWhat makes the Open University unique from other universities?\nWhat major challenges have open universities faced over the past 10-years?\nTo what extent is the Open University still relevant in the digital-era?\n\nThe first question offers an opportunity to discuss the uniqueness of the Open University and the role it has played in different contexts across Europe and the World more generally. The second question is aimed to reflect back on some of the major challenges that the Open University model has experienced in recent times and what changes have taken place. Following on from this question the final question looks ahead to some of the issues facing the Open University in modern times and what role they should play in the future. In light of the digital-era where online education has arguably become the “new norm” our invited guests are challenged to make the case for the continued relevance and importance of the Open University in meeting the rapidly changing needs to today’s students and our ever-changing societies. \nSpeakers: \n\nLiz Marr\, The Open University\, UK\nJosep M. SUMMARY:Considerations for Quality Assurance of e-Learning Provision
DESCRIPTION:Format: Presentation/panel discussion\nDescription: The learning landscape looks completely different today than it did five years ago. The way that learners are learning is changing dramatically. Today learning is available anywhere\, and everywhere\, and through any kind of device. Mobile learning is the first choice for most people today. Within a context of globalization and the knowledge economy\, the quality of higher education is increasingly regarded as strategically important for national economic development and competitiveness. High quality and relevant higher education equips students with the knowledge\, skills and core transferable competences they need to succeed after graduation\, within a high-quality learning environment which recognizes and supports good learning and  teaching. The recommendations in the occasional paper on Considerations for quality assurance of e-learning provision by ENQA are applicable to all forms of e-learning\, i.e. learning which is facilitated through the use of ICT. Besides examining the applicability and relevance of the standards defined in the ESG 2015\, this document is meant to initiate discussion and the thinking processes of stakeholders involved\, e.g. HEIs\, QA agencies\, etc. Read more https://enqa.eu/indirme/papers-and-reports/occasional-papers/Considerations%20for%20QA%20of%20e-learning%20provision.pdf \nMoreover\, the TeSLA project will be discussed. The TeSLA system is a project funded by the European Commission. It will follow the interoperability standards for integration into different learning environment and it will be developed to reduce the current restrictions of time and physical space in teaching and learning\, which opens up new opportunities for learners with physical or mental disabilities as well as respecting social and cultural differences. https://tesla-project.eu \nIn addition\, the EDEN SIG on TEL and quality enhancement will be presented\, which aim is to advocate and work for renewing the quality agenda in education. SUMMARY:New Learning Spaces to Support the EU 2020 Learning-Intensive Society
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel debate\nDescription: \n“Learning Spaces” (LS) is the term used in a report published in 2006 by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies\, “as a way to embrace a different view of future learning”. The context for learning in the schools and HEIs\, at any level\, is already changing\, and thus the characteristics and enabling infrastructure for learning spaces may also be changing. In this webinar strategies to plan and design new Learning Spaces\, related to the modern Learning-Intensive Society\, will be discussed. Two ancient\, long established and multidisciplinary Universities (Pavia -Italy- and Uppsala -Sweden-) will share their experience in this field\, highlighting the challenge to “promote the future” in historical buildings\, so rich in art\, culture and architectural constraints. \nExamples will be given of good learning practices and learning paths developed in Pavia and Uppsala LSs. \nPresenters: \n\nStefano Govoni\, ViceRector\, University of Pavia\nMarco Morandotti\, Deputy Rector for Real Estate\, University of Pavia\nMats Cullhed\, University of Uppsala\, Coimbra Group\nElena Caldirola\, University of Pavia\n\nwatch the recording

SUMMARY:Open Education: What Now?
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nOpen education is advocated by many as a means of improving educational effectiveness\, access\,  and equity. However\, openness in education is increasingly under threat. More platforms and tools are raising paywalls and several MOOC platforms are already experimenting with fees for access to course material\, thus making the open aspect of MOOC redundant. In addition\, data breaches\, misinformation\, and pervasive surveillance practices are now endemic on the open web. Thus\, the concept of open practice also can be viewed as a means of fuelling data capitalism and eroding privacy. \nIn this webinar we will discuss these issues with two authorities in the field of open education. \nFormat: Panel debate \nAlastair Creelman works as an e-learning specialist and is active in several national and international networks and projects in the field including being a member of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee. \nUniversity profile https://lnu.se/en/staff/alastair.creelman/ \nBlog http://acreelman.blogspot.se/ \nPanel members: \n\nMartin Weller – Professor of Educational Technology\, The Open University UK\n\nMartin Weller is Professor of Educational Technology at the Open University in the UK. He is the Director of the OER Hub\, and has published extensively in the area of open educational resources\, digital scholarship\, e-learning and open practice. He is the author of The Battle for Open & The Digital Scholar (both published under an open access licence) and blogs at edtechie.net. \nLinks:\nBlog: http://blog.edtechie.net/\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/mweller\nBattle for Open: https://www.ubiquitypress.com/site/books/10.5334/bam/\nOER Hub:http://oerhub.net/ \n\nCatherine Cronin – Strategic Education Developer\, National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education (Ireland)\n\nCatherine Cronin is an open educator and open researcher whose work focuses primarily on open education\, critical approaches to openness\, digital identity practices\, and exploring the interplay between formal and informal learning. Catherine recently completed her PhD in the area of open educational practices (OEP) in higher education. She has been involved in teaching\, research and advocacy in higher education and in the community for over 25 years and is a regular contributor to conversations and collaborative projects in the area of open education\, within Ireland and globally. \nLinks:\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/catherinecronin\nWebsite: http://catherinecronin.net/\nArticle: Open Education\, Open Questions\, EDUCAUSE Review\, 2017. https://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/10/open-education-open-questions \nWatch the recoding

SUMMARY:Virtual Reality
DESCRIPTION:Format: Presentations and discussion\nDescription:  With new technologies and digital devices we have changed our everyday life. We do not use books\, now we use e-books\, we do not watch how someone is doing something live\, we watch the video\, children do not play game outside but online\, student do not need to travel to participate in a course\, they use virtual mobility\, difficult and expensive experiments performed in laboratories can be performed easy in virtual laboratories\, virtual worlds… these are just few examples how technology can and already has enhanced our lives. Virtual reality enables better realisation of student centred learning\, higher quality of teaching and learning\, innovativeness and creativeness of teachers and students. \nIn this session we plan to discuss the importance of the virtual reality for education\, benefits and challenges. Our panelists will show  best practice and share their experiences. SUMMARY:How EDEN Network can Support PhD Students and Research?
DESCRIPTION:Description: In EDEN we offer opportunities for people to meet\, to discuss\, to network\, to share new ideas\, to create new knowledge\, etc. We do that for professionals\, teachers and researchers\, for students and supervisors\, for academics and non-academics. We recognize the importance of fundamental\, empirical or action research and want to share the outcomes with a large community of practitioners to improve the quality of open education in an evidence-based way. Above all we believe that the young generation of PhD students in and outside our network will be the drivers for change. Time to reflect on how we can address their needs and aspirations\, how we can help and support them in achieving their goals\, how we as a community can empower them in their research process\, how we can offer them a platform to test new ideas or to share their findings\, how our network can benefit from their work\, etc. These questions will be answered by the panelists\, while taking into account the voice of the PhD students themselves.\nFormat: Panel debate \nPresenters: \n\nAntonio Teixeira\, Universidade Aberta\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nAlbert Sangra\, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nMargarita Tereseviciene\, Vytautas Magnus University\nDeborah Arnold\, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nNilza  Costa\, University of Aveiro\n\nwatch the recording

SUMMARY:Line Between Non-formal and Formal Education - Recognition and Credentialing of Learning
DESCRIPTION:Format: Presentations/panel\nDescription: As lifelong learning is coming from a myth to reality\, education is increasingly diversifying. No longer a standard formal degree is the rule of the day but more and more education is an episodical process throughout life. While policy enthusiastically embraces these and related ideas\, practice is still struggling with following. And in between the ensuing debate\, labour market is announcing that “long-term”\, “bullet proofed” degrees are no longer the currency of the day for them but that small certified experiences\, competences and skills which have been gained through practical experiences are often much more speaking to them. The question can be posed: are we arriving at a new era of education? One which is much more focussing on informal learning\, non-formal learning and microcredentials instead of the traditional bachelor and master degree? \nPresenters: \n\nAirina Volunevičiene\, VMU & Sandra Kucina Softic\, SRCE; title of the presentation: ReOPEN: Recognition of Valid and Open Learning – Impact and established collaboration\nAlfredo Soeiro\, University of Porto\, EDEN Senior Fellow; title of the presentation: Validation of competences from virtual\, non formal or informal learning: a proposal\nIldiko Mazar\, Research & Development Associate\, Knowledge Innovation Centre; title of presentation: Open Credentials for Open EducationMoving the Needle Forward\nGiedrė Tamoliūnė\, Vytautas Magnus University; title of the presentation: Online learners’ interactions and engagement into study process\n\nWatch the recording
