SUMMARY:Education 2030 - Open knowledge\, skills\, attitudes and values in Europe and the world
DESCRIPTION:Short presentations & panel discussion\nWatch the recording \nModerator: Sandra Kucina Softic\, EDEN Vice-president\, SRCE \nDescription: \nEducation and learning are changing and developing on the basis of a range of drivers and technology is among the most prominent of these. Educators will increasingly find themselves in an environment in which there is an overload of information\, and so their tasks will\, among other things\, move to evaluating information effectively\, selecting teaching content wisely and helping learners to cope with information of different value and reliability. The Council of the EU recently acknowledged that\, together with literacy and numeracy\, a digital competence is crucial for accessing and progressing in the labour market and engaging in further education and training. In a changing world and a more unpredictable future\, lifelong learning is becoming a central element in people’s lives\, and digital learning is in many cases already making this more accessible\, flexible and cheaper. As open education models grow in prominence\, efforts should move towards making teacher-developed content and materials more widely available. Join us in the discussion on future of education in next decade. \nSpeakers: \n\nAirina Volungevičienė\, EDEN president\, Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania – What does it mean to open up education? Lessons learnt and challenges raised\nMorten Flate Paulsen\, EDEN Senior Fellow\, ICDE – Open leadership. Mapping and tracking global initiatives\nSvetlana Knyazeva\, EDEN Fellow\, UNESCO IITE – Openness of education: Urgent need for recognizing OER-based learning outcomes in Europe and worldwide\nKatrien Bardoel\, NUFFIC – e-Valuate Effective Policies for Recognition of New Forms of Online Learning\nPaul Bacsich\, EDEN Fellow\, Matic Media Ltd and Sero Consulting Ltd – Do we have a business model for openness in Europe?\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Considerations for Quality Assurance of e-Learning Provision
DESCRIPTION:Format: Presentation/panel discussion\nDescription: The learning landscape looks completely different today than it did five years ago. The way that learners are learning is changing dramatically. Today learning is available anywhere\, and everywhere\, and through any kind of device. Mobile learning is the first choice for most people today. Within a context of globalization and the knowledge economy\, the quality of higher education is increasingly regarded as strategically important for national economic development and competitiveness. High quality and relevant higher education equips students with the knowledge\, skills and core transferable competences they need to succeed after graduation\, within a high-quality learning environment which recognizes and supports good learning and  teaching. The recommendations in the occasional paper on Considerations for quality assurance of e-learning provision by ENQA are applicable to all forms of e-learning\, i.e. learning which is facilitated through the use of ICT. Besides examining the applicability and relevance of the standards defined in the ESG 2015\, this document is meant to initiate discussion and the thinking processes of stakeholders involved\, e.g. HEIs\, QA agencies\, etc. Read more https://enqa.eu/indirme/papers-and-reports/occasional-papers/Considerations%20for%20QA%20of%20e-learning%20provision.pdf \nMoreover\, the TeSLA project will be discussed. The TeSLA system is a project funded by the European Commission. It will follow the interoperability standards for integration into different learning environment and it will be developed to reduce the current restrictions of time and physical space in teaching and learning\, which opens up new opportunities for learners with physical or mental disabilities as well as respecting social and cultural differences. https://tesla-project.eu \nIn addition\, the EDEN SIG on TEL and quality enhancement will be presented\, which aim is to advocate and work for renewing the quality agenda in education. SUMMARY:New Learning Spaces to Support the EU 2020 Learning-Intensive Society
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel debate\nDescription: \n“Learning Spaces” (LS) is the term used in a report published in 2006 by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies\, “as a way to embrace a different view of future learning”. The context for learning in the schools and HEIs\, at any level\, is already changing\, and thus the characteristics and enabling infrastructure for learning spaces may also be changing. In this webinar strategies to plan and design new Learning Spaces\, related to the modern Learning-Intensive Society\, will be discussed. Two ancient\, long established and multidisciplinary Universities (Pavia -Italy- and Uppsala -Sweden-) will share their experience in this field\, highlighting the challenge to “promote the future” in historical buildings\, so rich in art\, culture and architectural constraints. \nExamples will be given of good learning practices and learning paths developed in Pavia and Uppsala LSs. \nPresenters: \n\nStefano Govoni\, ViceRector\, University of Pavia\nMarco Morandotti\, Deputy Rector for Real Estate\, University of Pavia\nMats Cullhed\, University of Uppsala\, Coimbra Group\nElena Caldirola\, University of Pavia\n\nwatch the recording

SUMMARY:Open Education: What Now?
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nOpen education is advocated by many as a means of improving educational effectiveness\, access\,  and equity. However\, openness in education is increasingly under threat. More platforms and tools are raising paywalls and several MOOC platforms are already experimenting with fees for access to course material\, thus making the open aspect of MOOC redundant. In addition\, data breaches\, misinformation\, and pervasive surveillance practices are now endemic on the open web. Thus\, the concept of open practice also can be viewed as a means of fuelling data capitalism and eroding privacy. \nIn this webinar we will discuss these issues with two authorities in the field of open education. \nFormat: Panel debate \nAlastair Creelman works as an e-learning specialist and is active in several national and international networks and projects in the field including being a member of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee. \nUniversity profile https://lnu.se/en/staff/alastair.creelman/ \nBlog http://acreelman.blogspot.se/ \nPanel members: \n\nMartin Weller – Professor of Educational Technology\, The Open University UK\n\nMartin Weller is Professor of Educational Technology at the Open University in the UK. He is the Director of the OER Hub\, and has published extensively in the area of open educational resources\, digital scholarship\, e-learning and open practice. He is the author of The Battle for Open & The Digital Scholar (both published under an open access licence) and blogs at edtechie.net. \nLinks:\nBlog: http://blog.edtechie.net/\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/mweller\nBattle for Open: https://www.ubiquitypress.com/site/books/10.5334/bam/\nOER Hub:http://oerhub.net/ \n\nCatherine Cronin – Strategic Education Developer\, National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education (Ireland)\n\nCatherine Cronin is an open educator and open researcher whose work focuses primarily on open education\, critical approaches to openness\, digital identity practices\, and exploring the interplay between formal and informal learning. Catherine recently completed her PhD in the area of open educational practices (OEP) in higher education. She has been involved in teaching\, research and advocacy in higher education and in the community for over 25 years and is a regular contributor to conversations and collaborative projects in the area of open education\, within Ireland and globally. \nLinks:\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/catherinecronin\nWebsite: http://catherinecronin.net/\nArticle: Open Education\, Open Questions\, EDUCAUSE Review\, 2017. https://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/10/open-education-open-questions \nWatch the recoding

SUMMARY:How EDEN Network can Support PhD Students and Research?
DESCRIPTION:Description: In EDEN we offer opportunities for people to meet\, to discuss\, to network\, to share new ideas\, to create new knowledge\, etc. We do that for professionals\, teachers and researchers\, for students and supervisors\, for academics and non-academics. We recognize the importance of fundamental\, empirical or action research and want to share the outcomes with a large community of practitioners to improve the quality of open education in an evidence-based way. Above all we believe that the young generation of PhD students in and outside our network will be the drivers for change. Time to reflect on how we can address their needs and aspirations\, how we can help and support them in achieving their goals\, how we as a community can empower them in their research process\, how we can offer them a platform to test new ideas or to share their findings\, how our network can benefit from their work\, etc. These questions will be answered by the panelists\, while taking into account the voice of the PhD students themselves.\nFormat: Panel debate \nPresenters: \n\nAntonio Teixeira\, Universidade Aberta\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nAlbert Sangra\, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nMargarita Tereseviciene\, Vytautas Magnus University\nDeborah Arnold\, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya\, EDEN Senior Fellow\nNilza  Costa\, University of Aveiro\n\nwatch the recording

SUMMARY:Line Between Non-formal and Formal Education - Recognition and Credentialing of Learning
DESCRIPTION:Format: Presentations/panel\nDescription: As lifelong learning is coming from a myth to reality\, education is increasingly diversifying. No longer a standard formal degree is the rule of the day but more and more education is an episodical process throughout life. While policy enthusiastically embraces these and related ideas\, practice is still struggling with following. And in between the ensuing debate\, labour market is announcing that “long-term”\, “bullet proofed” degrees are no longer the currency of the day for them but that small certified experiences\, competences and skills which have been gained through practical experiences are often much more speaking to them. The question can be posed: are we arriving at a new era of education? One which is much more focussing on informal learning\, non-formal learning and microcredentials instead of the traditional bachelor and master degree? \nPresenters: \n\nAirina Volunevičiene\, VMU & Sandra Kucina Softic\, SRCE; title of the presentation: ReOPEN: Recognition of Valid and Open Learning – Impact and established collaboration\nAlfredo Soeiro\, University of Porto\, EDEN Senior Fellow; title of the presentation: Validation of competences from virtual\, non formal or informal learning: a proposal\nIldiko Mazar\, Research & Development Associate\, Knowledge Innovation Centre; title of presentation: Open Credentials for Open EducationMoving the Needle Forward\nGiedrė Tamoliūnė\, Vytautas Magnus University; title of the presentation: Online learners’ interactions and engagement into study process\n\nWatch the recording

It will include details of the European Commission funded Adaptive Trust-based e-assessment System for Learning\, TeSLA\, project and two other projects: OpenMentor and OpenEssayist.Chris is a lecturer at the Open University’s Institute of Educational Technology\, where he chairs the masters module Openness and innovation in eLearning\, has programme responsibilities for the Masters in Online and Distance Education\, is a researcher on TeSLA and a data wrangler for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.\n\nDescription: \nAcademic institutions often define academic integrity as intellectual honesty within academic work that is devoid of plagiarism\, fabrication and dishonesty. It should be present in all types of educational settings.  Although plagiarism is not a new phenomenon it has become a greater concern lately especially in connection with online education. Questions like “is online learning creating new opportunities for plagiarism” or “how to prevent online students to use online resources without properly quoting or citing them” are becoming more present. The number of software for plagiarism detection is increasing and they are often looked at as the solution. Educational institutions\, especially universities are faced with the challenge of how to solve and prevent the issue of plagiarism and to make academic integrity a highly valued standard in the academic world again. What is the best solution to do it? \n

SUMMARY:New Global Challenges for Quality Development in Open Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Josep M. Duart\, EDEN Executive Committee Member\nFacilitators:  \n\nJosep M. Duart\nEbba Ossiannilsson\nUlf – Daniel Ehlers\n\nAlthough the MOOC-mania seems to be over and several world conferences have debated the potential of Open education and open educational resources\, it still seems that after all discussions\, debates and meetings\, we (have to) come back to the one important question: How can digital media\, learning technology\, digital learning materials help us to transform educational experiences and institutions in a way that we can provide more suitable learning scenarios to our future graduates in order to prepare them for an uncertain future. This is in the heart of the (global) quality debate. While we have discussed theses issue already at length in European contexts and communities we can now more and more see that the issue is globally important to all nations. So – it is time to allow for a moment of reflection and to see what is going on. To take stock of the big challenges\, the big global quality challenges. \nIn his presentation\, Ulf – Daniel Ehlers will try to take into account the last 10 years of quality debate and see where we still have open issues and map out the points which from my point of view are relevant to a current and future discussion agenda. He firmly believes that in the difficult economic and political climate we are currently in\, it is more important than ever to promote learning\, human and social capital development\, thus developing the knowledge society\, and strive for innovation. Digitalisation within the entire education sector is seen as a catalyst to foster the capacity to promote\, support and drive educational professionals’\, learners’ and organizations’ abilities to develop the competences they need for an ever changing and potentially uncertain future with growing risks. However\, open\, online and e-learning in Europe and globally\, as well as the concept of digitalisation in education are still not perceived with the same credibility as traditional modes of learning. Although a lot of progress has been made to bring digital technologies into the educational context in all European countries\, a renewed debate about quality on open\, online and e-learning\, sharing of good practices and trust into innovation and transformation through the use of digital technologies in education is needed today. It will help to understand how the educational experience can truly be enhanced\, how educational organizations’ capacity to do so can be developed and how policies around digital transformation can be shaped on individual\, institutional as well as national and European level. \nWatch the recording \n

SUMMARY:Quality In TEL On Micro\, Meso And Macro Level\, And Who Are The Stakeholders. Why And How Do They Have An Interest?
DESCRIPTION:Quality in TEL\, in the digital transformation can be considered\, discussed\, and even measured from a variety of perspectives and approaches. First\, quality has to be considered at different levels\, i.e. micro-level\, meso-level and macro-level. Second\, there are different approaches\, as accreditation\, certification\, benchmarking\, and or guidelines or  frame of references. Several stakeholders  have an interest in quality. Most often the stakeholders are considered as the learners\, the academics\, the institution\, and even on country level or international level. In addition\, maturity level has to be taken into consideration\, and also if quality is considered as norm based or process based.\nThe facilitators for this webinar will introduce the theme\, and different scenarios will be pointed out for an interesting discussion on how quality in TEL will be  a driver for the digital transformation  for learning and education. \nModerated by Ebba Ossiannilsson\, EDEN Executive Committee Member \nFacilitators:  \n\nEbba Ossiannilsson\, EDEN EC\, The Swedish Association for Distance Education\, Sweden\nMark Nichols\, EDEN EC\, Open University\, United Kingdom\nAirina Volungeviciene\,  EDEN President\, Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania\n\nPlease join our discussion and contribute to the discussion on Quality in TEL \nWatch the recording

SUMMARY:The Challenges and Opportunities of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel debate\nDescription: \nAt first glance\, the speed of developments in Europe is overwhelming. Pre-existing conditions created in education established immense possibilities for innovations on the continent. Very complex and concise solutions are already in place. If we think about Open Education\, we have a variety of forms on offer (MOOCs\, OER\, open online learning\, virtual mobility\, remote experiments and science education\, to name a few)\, as well as regulations facilitating collaboration of education providers on all levels of education (Bologna process\, credit transfer\, prior and non-formal learning recognition). \nET2020 open coordination groups already proved their important role in fostering developments in member states. The working group on Digital Skills and Competences addressed transversal issues and collaboration on innovation development and implementation through all levels of education. New instruments and tools were established to agree upon digitally competent organizations; citizens\, teachers and learners can suggest new training schemes and certification possibilities\, as well as recognition of digitally skilled employees in companies. \nThe opening panel of EDLW addresses these speedy developments\, unbundling solutions\, micro\, mezo\, and macro level discussions and the complexity of Europe. \nModerator: Airina Volungevičienė\, EDEN President \nPanel members: \n\nSumathi Subramaniam\, European Commission\, DG Education\, Youth\, Sport and Culture\, Innovation and EIT\nBrikena Xhomaqi\, Director – Lifelong Learning Platform\nRebecca Ferguson\, Senior Lecturer\, Institute of Educational Technology\, The Open University\nSharon Goldstein\, Berkeley College Online\nMarci Powell\, USDLA\nTimothy Read\, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor of Methodology & Technology\, National Distance Education University (UNED)\, Spain\n\nwatch the recording here
