DESCRIPTION:European Distance Learning Week (EDLW) – November 5-9\, 2018\n\nWith the success of the European Distance Learning Weeks (EDLW 2016 and 2017) in the background\, EDEN organised the high profile online event again in November 2018. \nThis year 8 webinars with over 500 registered participants were held. The participants came from 41 different countries including 13 countries from outside Europe from Canada to Peru\, from South Africa to Nepal\, encompassing 4 continents (Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, America) and demonstrating a strong geographical coverage and a substantial outreach. \nAltogether 36 facilitators contributed to the successful implementation of the ambitious programme. DESCRIPTION:The “MODERN project – Useful toolkit demonstration to evaluate and use digital tools in educational scenarios” webinar will take place on Monday\, 21 May\, 2018 at 16:00 CEST.\nMODERN project aimed at helping teachers and trainers incorporate new digital and mobile learning tools into day to day teaching and training delivery. The webinar will present the results of the project that has identified\, assessed and categorised the latest and popular digital teaching/training/learning tools. The webinar will present some demos as well. It will have two periods for questions: one after the presentation of project results and the other after the selected demos. \nFor a previous analysis of the content of the webinar please visit the project website: www.modern.pm. \nThe project created a 10 category classification system to make it easy for anyone to find the best tool for their chosen teaching method. The MODERN project has been funded by the European Commission under the ERASMUS+ Programme. The project was solely interested in pedagogic potential\, not “gimmicks” or commercial gain. \nThe webinar will be hosted by Alfredo Soreiro\, Deputy Chair of the EDEN NAP Steering Committee\, University of Porto\, Portugal. Active in other educational and training networks\, Alfredo brings more opportunities to cooperate with other educational networks and associations. As an EDEN Fellow Alfredo has worked for many years with EDEN even in the times of ODL Liaison Committee. \n\nAlfredo Soeiro holds a degree in civil engineering from University of Porto\, a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He was pro-rector of the University of Porto for Continuing Education between 1998 and 2003. Dr. Soeiro was a founding member of EUCEN (European University CE Network); RECLA (Latin American CE Network)\, and AUPEC (Portuguese University CE Association) His positions held were the vice presidency of EUCEN\, vice-presidency of SEFI\, president of IACEE\, president of AUPEC and president of SEFI. His main interests are engineering education\, continuing education and online learning\, focusing on networking\, international cooperation and student evaluation. Questions like “is online learning creating new opportunities for plagiarism” or “how to prevent online students to use online resources without properly quoting or citing them” are becoming more present. The number of software for plagiarism detection is increasing and they are often looked at as the solution. Educational institutions\, especially universities are faced with the challenge of how to solve and prevent the issue of plagiarism and to make academic integrity a highly valued standard in the academic world again. SUMMARY:New Global Challenges for Quality Development in Open Online Learning

Duart\nEbba Ossiannilsson\nUlf – Daniel Ehlers\n\nAlthough the MOOC-mania seems to be over and several world conferences have debated the potential of Open education and open educational resources\, it still seems that after all discussions\, debates and meetings\, we (have to) come back to the one important question: How can digital media\, learning technology\, digital learning materials help us to transform educational experiences and institutions in a way that we can provide more suitable learning scenarios to our future graduates in order to prepare them for an uncertain future. This is in the heart of the (global) quality debate. While we have discussed theses issue already at length in European contexts and communities we can now more and more see that the issue is globally important to all nations. So – it is time to allow for a moment of reflection and to see what is going on. To take stock of the big challenges\, the big global quality challenges. \nIn his presentation\, Ulf – Daniel Ehlers will try to take into account the last 10 years of quality debate and see where we still have open issues and map out the points which from my point of view are relevant to a current and future discussion agenda. He firmly believes that in the difficult economic and political climate we are currently in\, it is more important than ever to promote learning\, human and social capital development\, thus developing the knowledge society\, and strive for innovation. Digitalisation within the entire education sector is seen as a catalyst to foster the capacity to promote\, support and drive educational professionals’\, learners’ and organizations’ abilities to develop the competences they need for an ever changing and potentially uncertain future with growing risks. However\, open\, online and e-learning in Europe and globally\, as well as the concept of digitalisation in education are still not perceived with the same credibility as traditional modes of learning. Although a lot of progress has been made to bring digital technologies into the educational context in all European countries\, a renewed debate about quality on open\, online and e-learning\, sharing of good practices and trust into innovation and transformation through the use of digital technologies in education is needed today. It will help to understand how the educational experience can truly be enhanced\, how educational organizations’ capacity to do so can be developed and how policies around digital transformation can be shaped on individual\, institutional as well as national and European level. \nWatch the recording \n

SUMMARY:European Distance Learning Week
DESCRIPTION:After a successful partnership between EDEN and USDLA in organizing National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) in the US in 2015\, EDEN organised the first European Distance Learning Week (EDLW) in 2016\, further expanding upon its collaboration with the US and other EDEN international partnerships. \nThis year 5 webinars with 393 registered participants were held. The participants came from 44 different countries including 16 countries from outside Europe from Canada to Brazil\, from South Africa to Nepal\, encompassing all 4 continents (Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, America) and demonstrating a strong geographical coverage and a substantial outreach. \n153 participants eventually turned up. 31 facilitators contributed to the successful implementation of this initiative\, among them representatives of the European Commission and the Lifelong Learning Platform. EDEN thanks the valuable contribution of the facilitators and hope that this initiative successfully contributed to the European dialog about the present state and the future of open and distance learning. DESCRIPTION:An important part of social inclusion is having the foreign language skills necessary for day to day life. ICT\, including mobile apps and open online courses\, forms an important part of the way in which languages are learnt in our modern society. The improvement in communication networks and online tools\, accessible from a range of mobile devices and desktop computers\, facilitate activities developed to improve the four basic language competences (written and oral comprehension and production). Furthermore\, the wide availability of free language learning apps can help to supplement the online learning experience\, especially when network access is limited.\nThe question being considered in this webinar is whether such resources represent an effective learning approach for refugees given their changing geographical\, sociocultural and technological circumstances? \nWatch the recording \nIn the webinar you will meet: \nAgnes Kukulska-Hulme is Professor of Learning Technology and Communication at The Open University\, UK\, where she leads the Learning Futures research programme. Agnes has led numerous projects investigating innovative and emergent practices with learning technologies\, in tertiary education and informal learning. She has been part of the European MOTILL project on mobile technologies in lifelong learning\, the MASELTOV project on smart and personalized technologies for social inclusion of immigrants and the British Council project on Mobile Pedagogy for English Language Teaching. She has a long standing research interest in language learning supported by mobile technologies. \nThere is an abundance of mobile apps and online resources which can be used on smartphones for informal language learning on a daily basis. Such an approach can satisfy individuals’ personal learning goals and needs. Newly arrived migrants and refugees can take advantage of these learning opportunities but not many are used to being in charge of their own learning. Informal\, self-directed learning may complement\, or conflict with\, formal language classes. How can we support migrants in their transition to a new country and a new way of learning? \nTimothy Read is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED\, Spain. He has held a range of positions in the university government at UNED and is currently Pro-Vice Chancellor of Methodology and Technology. He is an EDEN Fellow and also the cofounder of the ATLAS research group and and is currently working in European and nationally funded projects in the area of mobile assisted language learning (MALL) and massive open online courses for languages (LMOOCs). \nSince 2012 there have been LMOOCs at UNED which have given us the opportunity to explore how these courses function and what their strengths and weaknesses are. As well as the course content and resources\, the social interaction possible can also reinforce learning\, since language can be both the object of study and the vehicle used to communicate. However\, refugees report that camp life can be chaotic and trying to use online courses is far from perfect. Some learners are very fast and enthusiastic but become very quickly disillusioned\, whilst others start slowly\, think more without expressing themselves aloud but when they do open their mouths\, everyone listens.\n\nWe may sometimes believe that silent learners are not interested\, difficult to communicate with or maybe even lazy. But maybe we have to delay our judgement. In particular\, a high risk of long term exclusion from labour market and society is denounced.\n\nThe key point is in fact that new skills are needed\, because traditional skills learnt at school and/or at university are partially losing their relevance as they do not seem to be applicable when the new work forces are facing nowadays’ demand for innovation and growth.\n\nWe have been developing different projects on the subject in our Department at University Roma Tre. SUMMARY:Validation and recognition of non-formal open learning

Today there are numerous ways to learn and importance of non-formal and informal learning is increasing. We are talking about lifelong learning and opening up education but still are reluctant to recognize online open learning. One commonly-voiced perception is that online education is still a second-rate form of education for education providers and employers. The recognition of non-formal and informal learning outcomes is among priorities of European Commission as well. \nThis was incentive for development of the Erasmus+ project ReOPEN (Recognition of Valid and Open Learning) which is just starting under the lead of Vytautas Magnus University\, Lithuania and project partners. The ReOPEN project aims to create instruments to develop validated open online learning for recognition of prior and non-formal learning. \nIn webinar we will give an overview on JRC policy report on “Validation of Non-formal MOOC – based Learning” and show examples of successful application of open learning for continuous professional staff development and employing examples of digital badge approach. Geographical boarders merged\, societies became digitalized and networked\, learning enriched and enhanced by technology application. Technology enriched learning became the tool to develop societies\, to implement sustainable development policies and to implement the mission of global education.\n\nWe must acknowledge the fact that European policy and ambitions are also now\, as never before\, closely followed by global organizations (such as Unesco and others) with the interest to transfer best practices to other countries in the world. European practices are in high demand\, for recognition and cooperation interest. European models of collaboration\, exchange and technology enhanced learning are ready and must be shared with the world.\n\nEDEN\, as European network of Academics and professionals working for 25 years in the field of open and distance learning\, recognizes European experience in integration of technological innovations in education as highly experienced\, solid\, and useful to be exploited and transferred to other countries in the world. In return\, European open and collaborative way to share experiences must generate feedback from other regions of the world to foster the developments of education innovations.
