Formerly at DG EMPL\, Anusca has worked on the validation of non-formal and informal learning and micro-credentials\, as project manager at European Schoolnet and researcher at JRC. Her main area of expertise is digital competence. She is the author and co-author of multiple articles\, papers\, reports on technologies for learning and creativity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRikke Toft Nørgård\, Associate Professor\, Danish School of Education\, Denmark\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRikke Toft Nørgård is an Associate Professor at the Danish School of Education\, Aarhus University\, Steering Group Member at the Centre for Higher Education Futures (CHEF) and Elected Board Member of the international Philosophy and Theory of Higher Education Society (PaTHES) and the national Danish Network for Educational Development in Higher Education (DUN) where she is also founder and co-leader of the DUN-SIG on Digital Pedagogy & Learning in Higher Education. Dr. Nørgård’s research and projects focuses on the complexities\, challenges and potentials of education\, design\, technology and philosophy in relation to the future of hybrid higher education institutions and practices. She is participating in and leading projects on the future of higher education with a focus on the arts and humanities as well as emerging technological fields and their impact on the future of education and culture across society. On March 1st 2023 the EPIC-WE Europe Horizon project that Nørgård is the Coordinator of is launched\, trying to bring these fields together in an effort to provide new co-operative models\, formats\, events and activities for bringing higher education institutions\, cultural organisations and creative industries together to co-create new cultural futures. \n\n\n\nTitle: Between the real and the ideal – Human futures in digital education? \n\n\n\nAbstract: As a response to Bill Reading’s central question: ‘How are we to reimagine the University\, once its guiding idea of culture has ceased to have an essential function?’ (Readings\, 1996\, p. 119)\, the talk introduces concepts and frameworks for imagining and manifesting more preferable educational futures by working hopefully andintentionally among those ruins. This is done through introducing the notions of hopepunk\, speculative design\, futures-making\, collective visioning and the futures cone as ways of widening the field of possible and more humane futures in digital education. Today\, we see a deliberate intention to reduce the unknown (possibilities) in order to be able to see and plan for a known future. As a consequence\, the spectrum of possible futures and feasible utopias in education\, accessible through imaginative and intentional futures-making\, becomes eradicated by a singular already-decided future to be planned for. To imagine more preferable futures\, to intentionally design against the grimdark and for the hopepunk\, and to imagine a feasible utopias for human digital education\, we must boldly move beyond projected\, probable and even plausible futures. To do this\, we need thinking and methods for materialising feasible utopias – for manifesting the ideal in the real – for nurturing the emergence of an expanded possibility space for future digital eduation. Here. notions of collective speculative visioning and hopepunk future-making are presented as methods for widening the field for digital education and for future-scaping more preferable futures through materialising a thousand tiny preferable worlds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter Lunch Session – Spotlight Speakers\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLiz Johnson\, Deputy Vice-Chancellor\, Deakin University\, Australia\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiz Johnson leads Deakin’s ambitious Education and Employability strategy\, including the drive to premium digital learning and outstanding student experience. Professor Johnson’s portfolio includes Indigenous Strategy\, Academic Governance and Standards\, Graduate Employment\, Faculty Services\, Student Services\, the Deakin Library\, Deakin Learning Futures\, the Dean of Students\, and the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE). As Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education from 2019-2021\, Professor Johnson steered teaching and learning at Deakin through the disruption of the COVID pandemic\, building from extensive projects on Deakin’s online learning environment\, teaching innovation and course development and staff capability for learning and teaching. During this period\, she sponsored re-imagining and restructure of Deakin’s professional services for students and Faculties\, substantive renewal of teaching and learning design and an institution-wide transformation to online assessment. In 2022\, Deakin University conferred on Professor Johnson the title of Alfred Deakin Professor\, the highest honour the University can bestow on a member of the academic staff\, recognising their outstanding and sustained contribution to furthering Deakin’s aims. \n\n\n\nTitle: Never waste a good crisis – assessment transformation at Deakin University \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\nDecades of educational research have described the principles and practices thatunderpin effective assessment and feedback. However\, assessment practice hasbeen slow to respond despite pockets of excellence. Headwinds slowing change arecomplex but include the high-stakes nature of summative assessment\, slow shifts incapability and conservative accreditation and regulatory instruments. Alongside itschallenges and stress\, the global pandemic forced innovation and opened new doorsin assessment practice. It is critical to build from that innovation towards betterpractice. \n\n\n\nDeakin University has twin missions in on-campus and online delivery to its 58\,000learners. Despite decades of online teaching and assessment\, over 1200 Deakinunits (subjects) had on-campus exams held in exam halls in 2019; including acomplex web of remote examination sites for distance students. In March 2020\, thepandemic swept that away and we pivoted to wholly online assessment. Throughcollectively reimagining assessment\, this transformation has created lasting changewith only a single unit using a (digital) on-campus exam in 2022. Units have switchedto digital assignments\, take-home exams\, in-person performance tasks and a strictlylimited number of online proctored exams. For this discussion\, we will explore theelements of successful and persistent change: grassroots engagement\, targetedsupport with a comprehensive evidence and practice base\, and fostering innovation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Mihai\, Assistant Professor of Innovation in Higher Education\, Maastricht University\, Netherlands\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Mihai is Assistant Professor of Innovation in Higher Education in the Department of Educational Research and Development\, School of Business and Economics\, Maastricht University. Previously she worked as Learning Designer at University College London (UCL)\, Curriculum Designer at the Institute of European Studies\, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and led the Centre for Teaching Innovations at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. Alexandra has a strong background in e-learning\, learning design and innovative teaching strategies. In her PhD she analysed in how far technology is used in teaching practices at European universities. \n\n\n\nTitle: “Building Common Ground: Faculty Professional Development Beyond Institutional Silos” \n\n\n\nAbstract: For faculty professional development to reach its full potential\, it is crucial that different actors at university level work together in a cohesive manner. However\, such concerted action is not a natural feature of a highly fragmented Higher Education landscape. In many universities\, the teams in charge of technological and pedagogical support belong to different departments and the communication channels are not always open or transparent. So how can we (re)imagine the future of professional development where meaningful work takes place across functional and disciplinary boundaries? How can we intentionally build the common ground necessary for effective faculty development? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlanaid White\, Dean Strategic Learning Innovation\, Dublin City University\, Ireland \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlanaid White is the Dean of Strategic Learning Innovation in DCU\, leading the implementation of a €19.9 million initiative funded through the Government’s Human Capital Initiative\, to radically reimagine the university curriculum and reconceptualise university teaching\, introducing new areas of study\, new ways of learning\, and embedding the transferable skills students will require to thrive in a yet to be defined workplace. Previously\, I have held the roles of Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Science and Health and Head of School of Chemical Sciences. \n\n\n\nTitle: How can we embrace ambiguity and uncertainty as we seek to transform our students learning experience?  \n\n\n\nAbstract: In DCU Futures\, DCU is embarking on its biggest ever educational innovation project\, as it seeks to transform the learning experience of our students. DCU Futures is structured around three pillars – what students learn\, how students learn\, and embedding the transversal skills that will enable our students to thrive. Our ambition is to empower our students to be future-capable and thrive in an increasingly unscripted world defined by volatility\, uncertainty\, complexity\, and ambiguity. Therein\, however\, lies the challenge: if we are to empower our students to thrive in a world of uncertainty and ambiguity\, we must also embrace them. But what does that look like? In this Spotlight session\, we explore what’s possible and how we can begin to achieve it.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinal Gasta Session – MC\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nTom Farrelly\, Social Science Lecturer & Academic Developer\, Munster Technological University\, Ireland\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Farrelly is Social Sciencie Lecturer and Academic Developer in Munster Technological University. In 2023 she was appointed as Universitat Oberta de Catalunya President. \n\n\n\nBetween October 2010 and February 2019\, she was dean of the UOC’s Faculty of Economics and Business. Throughout her academic career\, she has specialized in tax and financial management and management control\, and has taught courses on these subjects at a number of universities (University of Barcelona\, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya\, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona\, Pompeu Fabra University\, and the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia). She combined her teaching work with a professional career in accounting and tax consulting for private companies and public institutions. \n\n\n\nShe is deputy chair of the Catalan Professional Association of Economists and a member of the Government of Catalonia’s Economic Policy Advisory Board. Her research interests focus on financial reporting harmonization processes\, management control systems and the transformative power of higher education for employability given the complexity of labour market dynamics. She leads a number of different local and international initiatives in this field to reconfigure higher education and provide a response to the challenges for lifelong learning arising in the current context of transition. \n\n\n\nTitle: “Navigating Global Challenges through Lifelong Learning:  From teaching to empowering” \n\n\n\nAbstract: In an era marked by profound economic and societal shifts driven by rapid technological advancements\, universities must transcend their traditional role of knowledge creation and dissemination. Instead\, they must actively pursue strategies to amplify the transformative power of education\, benefiting both individuals’ employability and organizations’ competitiveness. To achieve this goal\, harnessing labor market insights and artificial intelligence technology becomes indispensable. In this context\, we present the UOC experience as a guiding example of how universities can enhance employability by leveraging the immense potential of artificial intelligence and big data. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa Bond\, Lecturer in Digital Technology Education\, University of South Australia\, Australia\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa Bond is a Lecturer in Digital Technology Education at the University of South Australia (Australia)\, an EPPI-Reviewer Training & Support Officer at University College London (UK)\, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Qualitative Evidence Synthesis at the University of Stavanger (Norway). Her research draws on her high school and higher education teaching experience and focuses in particular on how evidence synthesis can build research skills\, provide insight into digital teaching and learning to provide guidance to both policy and practice\, and identify key research gaps. Melissa is a member of the Center for Open Education Research\, a founding editorial boardmember of the Nordic Journal of Systematic Reviews in Education and she will soon be an Associate Editor for the Online Learning Journal. \n\n\n\nTitle: “Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going? Lessons From EdTech Evidence Synthesis” \n\n\n\nAbstract: The past fifty years have seen vast developments in the use of technology for teaching and learning\, and we have recently encountered another threshold moment; the rise and widespread popularisation of large language models such as ChatGPT-3. As we stand on the precipice of arguably a new era of teaching and learning\, it is time to take stock of where we have been\, in order to begin sculpting a future vision of teaching and learning. In order to help answer the key questions of thisyear’s conference theme\, this keynote will draw upon a body of evidence syntheses\, in order to cast a meta overview of the EdTech field\, and shine light on key considerations for research\, policy and practice going forward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter Lunch Session – Plenary 3\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMaren Deepwell\, CEO Association for Learning Technology\, United Kingdom\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaren Deepwell is the chief executive of the Association for Learning Technology\, the leading professional body for learning technology in the UK with around 3\,500 members. She has led the organisation since 2012 including a strategic transition to becoming a virtual team in 2018. Her particular focus is on professional recognition for learning technologists\, the development of a new ethical framework for professional practice and the future of technology in education. As a trained sculptor and anthropologist\, she brings both her creative and executive expertise to her professional practice as a leader\, strategic adviser and coach. \n\n\n\nTitle: Hope on the horizon: Setting out in a new direction for digital education \n\n\n\nAbstract: Over the past five years we have seen digital education scaled up\, with fully virtual\, blended and hybrid learning expanding to more and more learners. As we move beyond education in crisis response mode\, we have a unique opportunity to shape what’s ahead and also a responsibility to apply the lessons learnt in 2020/21.  \n\n\n\nWe saw what’s possible in an emergency\, and also what isn’t. I want to acknowledge that we are seeking hope at a time when many are battling burnout\, still picking up the pieces in a world in which many are still feeling the lingering impact of the global pandemic.  \n\n\n\nHow do we find optimism\, and a vision for a better future? Grounded in new research from ALT\, on how professional practice in digital education is changing\, and aligned with the Framework for Ethical Learning Technology (FELT)\, I will explore: \n\n\n\n\nWho has a say in shaping the future and whom we may be missing? \n\n\n\nWhat the future will hold for our students moving from hybrid learning to hybrid working?\n\n\n\nWhat do we need to consider in order to avoid going back as well as moving ahead into a future that doesn’t deliver?\n\n\n\n\nLet’s find inspiration to create our visions of the future\, without losing a critical perspective on digital innovation but with a renewed sense of hope and empowerment.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmission Types and Guidelines\n\n\n\nAuthors are invited to submit high-quality manuscripts reporting original unpublished research and recent developments. Submissions should align to the conference theme and in the topics related to the scope of the conference (see below). All paper types will be double blind peer reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee. Find all the submission types and guidelines below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Presentation Guidelines\n\n\n\nThere is no standard presentation template at EDEN 2023 Annual Conference. This means you are free to use your own template\, but we recommend that you do so using a 16:9 ratio in PowerPoint (or PDF)\, as all rooms are equipped with a computer and projector capable of widescreen display. \n\n\n\nAs a general principle ‘less is more’ with your slides containing just enough information or a handful of well-chosen images to enhance your talk rather than acting as your ‘notes’ of what you are going to say next. In other words\, displaying an image and/or three keywords on a slide in a large font is far more effective than listing several sentences under bullet points. Also please practise your presentation so you know that you can do justice to what you want to cover in the available time. If you intend to share the talk with another presenter\, then make sure you practice together and understand how long each of you has for your section of the presentation. \n\n\n\nTo promote follow-up discussion after your talk\, we suggest that you conclude your presentation with a single question or challenging thought for delegates to ponder. Ideally\, this question or your concluding thought should refer back to the sub-theme and relate to the overarching conference theme “Yes we can!” – Digital Education for Better Futures. \n\n\n\nNote: The last presenter in each session is expected to serve as session chair. \n\n\n\nNumber of slides and time restrictions: \n\n\n\n\nFull paper: up to 20 slides\, presentation time -15 min\, discussion time – 5 min\n\n\n\nConcise paper:  up to 15 slides\, presentation time -10 min\, discussion time – 5 min.\n\n\n\nGasta paper:  up to 12 slides. presentation time –  up to 5 min.\n\n\n\n\nNote: You do not need to send your presentations beforehand\, but please bring them to the conference and transfer the presentation file to the session computer before the start of the session.  \n\n\n\nThere are four different paper submission categories: \n\n\n\nFull paper – A Full Paper allows you to present a slightly longer account of your work. This presentation format is better suited to sharing the findings of case studies\, research projects or more mature innovations related to the conference theme/topics which allow you to provide a richer analysis\, description and interpretation of the work. Importantly\, a Full Paper should identify the main implications or discussion points which will be of wider interest to conference participants. The paper length is 2500 to 3500 words\, including tables\, figures and references. If your Full Paper is accepted\, the presentation time is a maximum of 15 minutes and 5 minutes for questions (i.e.\, 20 minutes in total).  \n\n\n\n\nDownload Full Paper Template\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nConcise paper – A Concise Paper allows you to present a shorter summary of your work. This presentation format is ideally suited to small projects\, new and emerging areas and works in progress. The format allows you to showcase and/or offer a brief snapshot of your work\, with a specific focus on the main findings or discussion points that should be of wider interest to conference participants. The length of a Concise Paper abstract should be 200-500 words. If your Concise Paper is accepted\, the presentation time is 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions (i.e.\, 15 minutes in total). \n\n\n\n\nDownload Concise Paper Template\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoster – A Poster allows you to present your work on a poster board which will be on display throughout the conference. This format is ideal for showcasing and/or offering a brief snapshot of your work in order to generate more interest and follow up conversations with conference participants. The author(s) need to bring the printed poster to the conference and attach it on the poster board when they arrive at the conference venue. There will be a dedicated poster session in the conference programme\, but we encourage presenters to be available to discuss their work during the refreshment breaks. Poster submissions are between 250 and 500 words\, including references. Authors of posters accepted for presentation will be required to prepare a maximum A0 (1189mm x 841mm) size poster for display. More details concerning poster requirements will be provided upon acceptance. \n\n\n\n\nDownload Poster Presentation Template\n\n\n\n\nGuidelines for posters: \n\n\n\nThe author(s) need to bring the printed poster to the conference and attach it to the poster board when they arrive at the conference venue. An express taxi/bus lane is located directly outside the hotel giving guests quick accessibility to the Dublin city centre. The city centre is approximately a 30-minute walk from the hotel. More information here. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.dublinskylonhotel.com\n\n\n\n\nBonnington Hotel\n\n\n\nThis large older hotel with 200 rooms is only a 10-minute walk from the conference venue. It has an attached leisure centre\, and the hotel is conveniently located on the main route to Dublin’s International Airport (6km). Only 3km from the centre of Dublin (a 35-minute walk)\, taxis and regular buses pass by every few minutes. SUMMARY:Open Education Week 2023 - "Applying and Translating Learning Design and Analytics Approaches in Your Institution"
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\n\n\nThis interactive workshop delivered by the University of Zagreb\, Faculty of Organisation and Informatics (UZ)\, School of Medicine\, and the Open University UK (OU) will build on several large-scale implementations of learning design and learning analytics\, and how you could potentially implement similar approaches in your institution. \n\n\n\nFor example\, the OU has been implementing learning design for over 15 years as a structured design\, specification\, and review process for blended and online courses. The learning design is focused on “what students do” as part of their learning\, rather than on “what teachers do” or on what will be taught. Building on this work\, UZ has recently developed the Balanced Design Planning (BDP) tool specifically for educators working in hybrid and blended contexts. The tool (www.learning-design.eu/) is more focussed on intended learning outcomes and automated learning analytics and is currently developed and tested with 700+ practitioners from 25+ institutions as part of several European projects (eDesk\, Teach4EDU\, RAPIDE\, iLED)\, and is publicly available for other institutions to use for free. \n\n\n\nIn this EDEN workshop we aim to showcase what we have learned from implementing the BDP concept and tool\, and how we have further updated and fine-tuned the approach based upon both feedback from end users as well as participating institutions.  \n\n\n\nOutcomes \n\n\n\n\nDevelop your own learning design and learning analytics approaches and/or to work with other educators to design a joint course and share it with other peers/students based on hands-on experiences with the Balanced Design Planning tool.\n\n\n\nUse lessons learned from both approaches from a range of European institutions in your own teaching and learning practices.\n\n\n\nApply and translate these learning design and learning analytics approaches into your own institution based on provided good practices and use of the LD and LA concepts and tools.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Leaders\n\n\n\n\nBart Rienties\, The Open University\, United Kingdom\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBart Rienties is Professor of Learning Analytics and programme lead of the learning analytics and learning design research programme at the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University UK. SUMMARY:Open Education Week 2023 - "What Is the Future of Open Education?"
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nIn this panel session with policymakers and experts on open\, online and distance education we will reflect on the present situation regarding open education. Open education is a philosophy\, a way of carrying out education with the aim to widen access and participation to everyone by removing barriers and making learning accessible\, abundant\, and customisable for all. Open education is becoming ever more important in European higher education and on the global level as well due to the fact that digital technologies are one of the main driving forces behind education modernisation. So\, why do we still need to discuss the benefits of open education? How pandemic\, AI developments (especially chat GPT) and all other issues in the context of open education affected open education in a good or poor way? How can we make open education more visible and actual and did it become mainstream? We do have numerous examples of best practices\, great projects on open education\, initiatives\, documents and policies. Nevertheless\, numerous teachers are still unaware of open educational resources and open educational practices and educational institutions do not implement the principles of openness in education or research. \n\n\n\nTo give you food for thought some of the panellists shared their views on open education in statements: \n\n\n\n\nJosep M. Duart: “Open education is a way of understanding education; to me\, it is the only one possible. Education is about sharing learning\, feelings\, experiences\, paths\, etc. Technology increases the power of Open Education by creating a global space of exchange and openness. Challenges and opportunities exist\, and the educators’ task is to interpret them in their context”.\n\n\n\nMark Brown: “Open Education is a popular catechism which suffers from many different interpretations. A deeper more transformative conception of openness that contributes to real changes in educational practices continues to depend on how successful we are in fundamentally challenging traditional closed beliefs\, policies and cultures”.\n\n\n\nJames Glapa-Grossklag: “Open education is not an end goal in itself\, rather open education provides a set of tools to accomplish larger goals\, such as increasing graduation rates and promoting student belonging”.\n\n\n\nAndreia Inamorato Dos Santos: “Open education practices need to be connected to social challenges to remain relevant and in the spotlight for policymakers. There is a need to update the discourse on open education\, as well as unpack the various ramifications and principles of open education in fields such as artificial intelligence\, digital competence\, inclusion\, equity\, and social justice”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nSandra Kučina Softić\, University of Zagreb University Computing Centre\, Croatia\, EDEN Digital Learning Europe MB Member\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra Kučina Softić is the Assistant Director at the University of Zagreb University Computing Centre SRCE (Croatia). Obviously with every single click potentially interesting data might become available about how and perhaps why learners are engaging with learning materials and activities.  A blossoming field of learning analytics has emerged since 2011 trying to make sense of these increased data flows. The Open University UK (OU) has been trailblazing innovative learning across the globe for 50 years. Since 2014 the OU has gradually moved from small-scale experimentation to large-scale adoption of learning analytics throughout all 400+ modules and qualifications available within the OU for its 170.000+ online learners. \n\n\n\nThis keynote will explore how you as researcher\, practitioner\, and/or policy maker could start to use learning analytics to better understand your educational practice. Using examples from small-scale experiments and large-scale adoptions of predictive learning analytics I will explore together with EDEN RW participants which approaches and methods in learning analytics might be useful to consider. No prior knowledge or experience of learning analytics is expected\, and join me on a journey of how you could potentially use data from your learners and teachers to further improve and finetune your blended and online provision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact us\n\n\n\nIf you have any queries\, or for further information\, please email eden-dubrovnik@foi.unizg.hr \n\n\n\n\n\nSubmission categories\n\n\n\nPaper presentations – Presentation of research results\, reviews of existing results (including empirical or theoretical studies\, policy reviews\, comprehensive case studies)\, and project results that are in a conclusive phase. \n\n\n\nPosters – Work-in-progress\, initial research results\, projects in early stages of development\, and case studies. One can feel and experience with all senses its title of one of the world’s most beautiful cities and “a living museum within the modern present”\, being the perfect background for numerous cultural\, professional and scientific events.  It was the only city-state on the entire Croatian coast from the 14th to the 19th century. Seafaring\, harbouring and trade\, together with the wise international policy and skilful diplomacy brought economic and cultural prosperity for centuries to the free city–state and brought in world’s finest builders and artists\, which contributed to its richness and diversity. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Dubrovnik with map\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conference venue is the University of Dubrovnik. SUMMARY:How we can and should respond to the educational needs of those who have become refugees
DESCRIPTION:The disruptions caused by war\, oppressive regimes and environmental degradation are causing unprecedented levels of social dislocation and violence. To all this can now be added the shocking impact of war and invasion in Europe itself. Millions of people have had to flee just to stay alive. Individuals and families alike have been traumatised by this. We would like to explore the impact on educational needs and whether we can fashion interventions that somehow ease the pain while also providing a model of a way forward for those so impacted. \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:How can we transform e-Learning practices through capacity building?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGThis session will showcase examples of a good practice using capacity building funds to transform the teaching and learning practice of educational institutions that were in their early beginnings as it comes to e-learning. Our panellists will reflect on their experiences during such a journey – where were they at the beginning\, how did they prepare for the transition\, what activities have been undertaken\, where are they now\, and finally\, what are their plans? Reflections will be done from the perspective of the institutional leaders\, teachers\, and supportive staff. \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Opening up Museums: how inclusive open education is transforming the museum experience
DESCRIPTION:Experts panel\nEither as a response to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis or a strategic move towards a more participatory culture\, most museums worldwide are now providing open access online to a large amount of their curated digital heritage content. In order to promote collaboration and learning through co-creation\, many opened up their online collections to social tagging\, or started working with communities of volunteers to transcribe manuscript archives for digital publishing projects. Some others started crowdsourcing and crowdfunding initiatives. In this new context\, Museum MOOCs and OERs have become popular tools and are now used in formal and non formal learning contexts as well as for professional development. As the learning experience becomes increasingly open\, hybrid\, ubiquitous and personalized\, museum education comes to be more engaging\, participatory and transformative\, as well as more accessible and inclusive. \nIn this webinar a panel of expert researchers will discuss how open education is contributing to the digital transformation of the museum learning experience. They will show how open education is being embraced by museum educators and explain why that is helping to address inclusion for all\, but also widening participation\, developing critical thinking\, fostering digital citizenship\, and promoting wellbeing. Speakers will share best practices and present significant experiences from such projects as INCLUSIVE MEMORY\, MUSACCES and SPEKTRUM. \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Democratizing research and science: Ways forward
DESCRIPTION:Presentations and panel discussion\nIn this session\, we will reflect on how research  and science are currently produced and discuss ways we could make them more inclusive\, open\, and democratic. In the first talk\, Dr  Jess Carr will talk about participatory and inclusive research with excluded communities. In the second talk\, Dr Christothea Herodotou will talk about how technology can support democratic research by allowing non-professionals to set up their own studies. In the third talk\, Prof Bart Rienties will discuss about open science and scholarship in relation to learning analytics\, inviting attendees’ to share their thoughts and perspectives. \nTalk 1 Dr Jess Carr \nTitle: What makes a researcher? Doing participatory inclusive research with excluded communities \nAbstract: To an outsider\, research and higher education institutions can seem ‘elitist’. Yet as funders look to include more communities in research\, our practice must change. So how do we engage with communities that are frequently excluded\, and break down the barriers put up by researchers who came before us? This talk will explore inclusive research\, and its participatory approaches in engaging adults with learning disabilities as co-researchers. \n\nTalk 2 Dr. Christothea Herodotou \nTitle: Opening research to non-professionals through community-led citizen science \nAbstract: A means of democratising research is to enable communities and individuals with no or limited science expertise to design their own scientific investigations\, grounded on their needs and requirements. The award-winning nQuire platform (nquire.org.uk) has been designed with support from the OU/BBC partnership\, to scaffold the process of setting up and managing scientific investigations and enable community-led citizen science. It has engaged 230K+ people with research. Two mechanisms support participants in taking control of the research process: an authoring tool and collaboration with scientists. A survey of 150 participants of nQuire identified challenges related to people initiating their own studies such as a lack of time and the need for support\, that researchers should tackle if it is to open science to all.  Implications for the design of community-led citizen science will be discussed. \n\nTalk 3 Prof Bart Rienties \nTitle: Building Open Science and Scholarship in learning analytics: some preliminary thoughts \nAbstract: On 21 March the Society of Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) will bring together some leading thinkers in learning analytics and data science to discuss how open science and scholarship can be incorporated into learning analytics culture and practice. Practitioners and researchers from across the world are invited to share their thoughts and perspectives. At EDEN on the 8th of March we are keen to explore your perspectives on open science and scholarship\, in particular with relation to learning analytics. Amongst the questions to be discussed are: What could and should EDEN and SoLAR do to encourage open science and scholarship?; What prevents researchers from contributing to open science?; Which learning analytics approaches could (not) be made open\, and why?; And what could organisations like SoLAR and EDEN do to make open science and scholarship more attractive and relevant? \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Designing Future Skills-ready Future higher education: Why it Matters and What We can Do A Future Skills - Apéro conversation with Gilly Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Interactive Apéro discussion; possibility for participants to engage with questions in the conversation\nThe world is changing faster than ever before – not only since the pandemic. Which are the skills needed to engage in and shape inclusive societies and master emergent\, uncertain futures? And are today’s higher education institutions and the current teaching and learning practices appropriate for meeting the new challenges? Future Skills are gaining relevance and importance in the discussion on present and future higher education. Not only are Future Skills one of the currently most debated topics – they also open up to fascinating new approaches of how we live and learn together. \nThis Future Skills Apéro with world-renowned Professor Gilly Salmon is hosted by Ulf-Daniel Ehlers and Laura Eigbrecht. The conversation will focus on sharing insights from her work on transformation of higher education and feature spicy good anecdotes\, examples and stories ‘between the lines’. We will ask Gilly Salmon why Future Skills matter\, how we can promote them\, what we can learn from education in times of the pandemic and how we can design future and Future Skills-ready higher education. Participants are invited to contribute to the discussion by bringing in their questions and impulses to the conversation. \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

SUMMARY:Yes it's Open but is it any Good? Reflections on an Open Reading Initiative of Scholarly Research
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion\nThis webinar focuses on the growth of open science and the plethora of open access scholarly publications in the area of digital education—for better and worse. It begins by reflecting on the 6th edition of the NIDL “top 10” good reads in the field of digital education. This exercise identifies a collection of scholarly open access articles published over the previous year that make a valuable contribution to the literature. A panel discussion then considers the challenge of finding time to “slow” read the literature and shares critical strategies for keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving literature. We ask what should you be reading? What was your top read from 2021? How do you filter the literature to ascertain whether a publication or journal article is worth reading? How much time do you spend ‘slow’ reading the literature each month and is this long enough? Just how “good” is the open-access literature? \n[eden-webinar-moderators] \n[eden-webinar-speakers]

DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR JOIN WITH ZOOMLanguage: Italian\nNell’ambito del seminario\, dopo aver concettualizzato il tema dell’inclusione scolastica secondo la prospettiva del modello bio–psico–sociale dell’ICF (International Classification of Functioning) (OMS\, 2002))\, si farà riferimento ad alcune criticità emerse nel contesto nazionale relativamente al fenomeno del “push and pull out” (Ianes e Demo\, 2015)\, evidenziando come sono sempre più frequenti forme diversificate di micro–esclusione degli studenti con disabilità nel contesto scolastico. SUMMARY:Listening to student voices on cultural diversity: a strategy to promote interculturalism in schools
DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR JOIN WITH ZOOMLanguage: English\nResearch on student voice suggests that children’s perspectives are important in the efforts to promote equal education opportunities to culturally-diverse student population. Despite the increased attention student voice has received\, children’s critiques and reflections of their socio-educational experiences are usually ignored by their schools. This aims to reflect on how student voice could support intercultural efforts in schools by investigating the ways in which immigrant and native children in primary schools perceive cultural diversity and its implications on their daily lives. This research can be very informative for the formation of future policies\, practices\, and teaching methodologies in culturally-diverse schools. \nSpeaker\nChristina Hadjisoteriou\nUniversity of Nicosia\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Online Civic Engagement and Service Learning in Hybrid Realities: Implications for the Real-World and the Metaverse
DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR REGISTER \nDescription\nEffective civic engagement relies on citizens to understand the society around them\, question it\, and come together to change it where necessary. As the pandemic has recently demonstrated\, a large part of societal functions can take place online\, and as such\, so can civic engagement! \nConsequently\, educators are faced with the task of supporting students learn how to exercise their civic responsibilities online\, and which tools and resources are available for this purpose. Arguably\, as people move further away from the real world\, they are less sensitive to the problems that arise there. Since even our future social interactions are starting to be defined in terms of such “metaverses”\, it is vital that an equilibrium be achieved between online and real-world contexts and responsibilities. What role should educators have in this process? \nA possible way to maintain this equilibrium for future generations\, and meld the online and real-world\, may come from insights gained from service learning. It offers a way to facilitate student experience and understanding of key social issues in their community by using gradual placements in real environments. Therefore\, the more students move online\, the more they will be grounded in the real-world. \nIn this webinar\, different aspects of these issues will be discussed and some reflections provided on how students can be prepared to act as responsible citizens in future hybrid realities. As part of this narrative\, results of different initiatives and research projects will be presented. \n\nType of session: presentations with discussion \nModerators\nTimothy Read\nEDEN Vice-president for Open Professional Collaboration\,\nSenior Lecturer\, Department of Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED. SUMMARY:Assessment of STEM transversal skills from conceptual framework to real- world problems
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n  \n\nAssessment of Transversal Skills in STEM is an innovative policy experimentation project  being conducted across 8 EU countries and involving a partner network of 12 educational institutions. It aims to enhance digital assessment of students’ transversal skills in STEM. Drawing on key ideas and theories of STEM educational policy\, formative assessment\, use of digital learning tools\, and integrated STEM education the project developed an overarching conceptual framework that underpinned a training and development programme for teachers. Teachers in 107 schools in seven European countries worked with teacher mentors to help teachers reflect on and develop their teaching practices to teach students key STEM skills via learning projects aiming to have real work impact and address the UN’s sustainable development goals.\nThis presentation will feature tales spun from theoretical frameworks to classroom practices. Dr. Eamon Costello will first give an overview of the project and discuss the topic of real world skills\, a concept of contestation in the STEM educational discourse. Following the overview\, Dr Eva Hartell  will present on the project implementation in Sweden where the research team worked in partnership with schools and parents on projects that allowed students to explore and affect their real world. Lastly\, teacher Alberto Sacido will share an inspirational story of the ATS STEM pilot implementation undertaken in Rosalía de Castro High School\, Spain\, with his enterprising students in a project about Covid-19.\nType of session: presentations with discussion \nModerators\nOrna Farrell\nDCU\n \nDr Orna Farrell is Assistant Professor specialising in online and blended education in Dublin City University (DCU).
