SUMMARY:Online Civic Engagement and Service Learning in Hybrid Realities: Implications for the Real-World and the Metaverse
DESCRIPTION:ADD TO CALENDAR REGISTER \nDescription\nEffective civic engagement relies on citizens to understand the society around them\, question it\, and come together to change it where necessary. As the pandemic has recently demonstrated\, a large part of societal functions can take place online\, and as such\, so can civic engagement! \nConsequently\, educators are faced with the task of supporting students learn how to exercise their civic responsibilities online\, and which tools and resources are available for this purpose. Arguably\, as people move further away from the real world\, they are less sensitive to the problems that arise there. Since even our future social interactions are starting to be defined in terms of such “metaverses”\, it is vital that an equilibrium be achieved between online and real-world contexts and responsibilities. What role should educators have in this process? \nA possible way to maintain this equilibrium for future generations\, and meld the online and real-world\, may come from insights gained from service learning. It offers a way to facilitate student experience and understanding of key social issues in their community by using gradual placements in real environments. Therefore\, the more students move online\, the more they will be grounded in the real-world. \nIn this webinar\, different aspects of these issues will be discussed and some reflections provided on how students can be prepared to act as responsible citizens in future hybrid realities. As part of this narrative\, results of different initiatives and research projects will be presented. \n\nType of session: presentations with discussion \nModerators\nTimothy Read\nEDEN Vice-president for Open Professional Collaboration\,\nSenior Lecturer\, Department of Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED. SUMMARY:Stepping up to the plate! How technology has supported ODL during and after the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Format: Short presentations followed by panel discussion\nDescription:\nThe pandemic caused by COVID19 brought about an acceleration in the already existing transition from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online and distance education. The initial switch to “emergency remote teaching”\, in fire-fighting mode\, gave way gradually to finer-grained and more sophisticated e-learning scenarios\, mixing synchronous and asynchronous practices with multimodal resources. While educationalists have quite rightly been very visible during this period\, supporting the different pedagogical aspects\, it is without a doubt the underlying technology\, robust and scalable\, that has made this transition possible. The management of this process has been a challenge to the technologists working in this area. SUMMARY:A Report Card on the Crisis: What is the Legacy of the Great Onlining of Higher Education?
DESCRIPTION:Format: Panel discussion\nDescription\nIn this session we will reflect on the present situation in higher education in post pandemic times by asking several key questions. How well did we cope and what lessons did we learn? How are those lessons reflected in future planning? What now? We plan to discuss how we can take this opportunity and the legacy of a crisis to rethink traditional models of teaching and learning.  What should stay and what needs to change? Will higher education ever be the same again? Will we be able to retain the advantages and benefits of gaining more experience in online education\, or will we feel compelled to get back to “normal” times? Why did we need a pandemic as the catalyst for the digital transformation of higher education? What is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? Has the future of online education been endangered by emergency remote teaching? What are some of the debates and challenges we need to address in establishing the place of online education in the higher education ecosystem? SUMMARY:European Online and Distance Learning Week (EODLW)
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGS EDEN is proudly hosting the European Online and Distance Learning Week (EODLW) for the sixth time! The event is organised in partnership with the Open Distance Learning Association in Australia (ODLAA) jointly with Flexible Learning Association of New Zealand (FLANZ) who are launching the Asia-Pacific Online Distance Education (APODE) Week and with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA)\, who will be holding its National Distance Learning Week (NDLW). A special webinar contribution by ICDE is also planned. \n\nEDEN thanks all the participants\, moderators\, panelists\, organisers and partner associations who supported us in hosting once again an insightful European Online and Distance Learning Week. We welcomed a total of 700 online attendees at 8 webinars\, with 36 moderators and speakers. This year we renewed our partnership with USDLA\, ODLAA and FLANZ. We had a special contribution from ICDE and Blackboard. \n\n\nStudents’ voice was represented in the session lead by Airina Volungevičienė. \n\n\nWe closed the EODLW series of webinars with a motivating discussion lead by Sandra Kucina\, featuring Georgi Dimitrov\, Josep A. Planell Estany\, Mark Brown\, Airina Volungevičienė and Alfredo Soeiro. \n\n\nThis week represented an excellent opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic\, with the aim to identify and pursue the good practices in online teaching and learning. Among the topics\, MOOC\, XR technologies\, OER and microcredentials were discussed by experts in these fields. \n\n\nEODLW in numbers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy did we need a pandemic as the catalyst for the digital transformation of higher education?  \n\n\nThe transformation has been apparent\, a real transformation requires time and determination from all stakeholders involved (from Mark Brown’s speech). \n\n\nWe have to build new models to facilitate the online learners\, digital tools shall serve us to improve communication (from Alfredo Soeiro’s speech). \n\n\nOpen universities have the duty to lead the digital transformation from the experience they have since before the pandemic (from Josep A. Planell Estany’s speech). \n\n\nWhat is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? \n\n\nThe DEAP will support building a European digital education area\, which is a priority of the European Commission. SUMMARY:Digital skills and training practices in disruptive industries: a European perspective
DESCRIPTION:Description\nNew\, flexible and on-demand skills training is needed to tackle digital disruption and generate employment and productivity\, especially in disruptive industries. According to OECD\, many EU countries have a strong focus on formal education which does not lead to the desired results. Especially adults with low skills are left behind and participation does not always yield good labor market outcomes for them. This EDEN NAP webinar presents an analysis on how companies and company members approach learning\, training and digital technologies in various disruptive sectors in four European countries. This analysis has been carried out within the framework of the Erasmus+ Project StiLLLearning\, a project aimed at 1. identifying the most relevant key competences needed in European disruptive industries; 2. Co-creating an idea back for innovative learning and training solutions for work-based learning 3. Designing and implementing an open hypervideo-based cMOOC (collaborative massive open online course) for competence developers in industries and vocational and adult educators https://www.stilllearning.net/A total of 63 participants were interviewed from Tourism (Italy and Switzerland)\, Textile (Italy and Switzerland)\, Automotive (Germany)\, Building (Switzerland) and Bioeconomy (Finland) sectors. The speakers will present the general results of this international study\, discussing differences and similarities among sectors\, countries and roles (employer\, employee and adult educators). Results suggest that the most mentioned tools for learning at work were for communication\, followed by productivity and video tools\, whereas learning content management systems and innovative applications were less recognised. After the presentation of the general results\, each speaker will discuss some qualitative country-based considerations. Discussion with participants will be focused on practical implications for HR managers\, learning specialists and VET schools in disruptive industries.Type of session: presentations with discussion \n  \nModerators\nFrancesca AmenduniSenior Researcher\, SFUVET\, SwitzerlandFrancesca Amenduni is a member of the Steering Committee of the EDEN Network of Academic and Professionals. SUMMARY:No. 4 - Do we develop digital competences or digital skills? – DigCompEdu to balance your way through the storm
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nWhen all education organizations moved online in Spring\, 2020\, many of them had no time at all to think about consistent development of digital competences and existing frameworks\, but took rapid actions to find most suitable technological solutions to ensure teaching and learning and filled in the skill – gaps of their educators to apply technologies to transfer information in the smooth and inclusive way.However\, by the pandemic year\, several important instruments describing digital competences of educators already exited\, namely\, competence metaframeworks\, covering knowledge\, skill and attitude/ responsibility level\, as well as digital competence framework for educators – DigCompEdu – and many others. When the storm surpassed\, we have to look around us to reflect on our practices and the way how digital competence development is addressed in education organizations and how this is in line with the competence definition in the broad sense.Moreover\, several important initiatives in the European projects among academics and professionals prepared suggestions on how to address DigCompEdu competence groups and how to match DigCompEdu framework with the competence maturity model. Others raised important questions if digital competence framework is important for educators only\, and how student digital competences are to be considered in this perspective. The webinar dedicated to address these issues will address the challenges and needs that education institutions experience in digital competence development\, will look at the proposal of new meta competences as suggestions for DigCompEdu\, the maturity model proposal\, and will discuss how the pandemic highlighted the need for development of digital competences. \n  \nModerator\nAirina VolungevičienėEDEN Digital Learning Europe\,Vytautas Magnus University \nProf. dr. SUMMARY:No. 3 - Teaching After the Storm: Reimagining the Traditional Lecture
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER ADD TO CALENDAR \nDescription\n\nIn this webinar\, we explore the question is the lecture dead? Will the traditional lecture format be a casualty of efforts to build back better? One of the biggest challenges facing educators when quickly moving to emergency remote online teaching was how to teach large classes effectively. At the beginning of the COVID crisis\, many people merely replaced their traditional face-to-face lecture with a live synchronously delivered session through Zoom\, Teams\, Collaborate\, or other online platforms. It soon became apparent that lecturing down a digital pipe to a large group of students passively watching from their screen-tops was not the most engaging form of online learning. While this approach was understandable during the height of a crisis\, students’ feedback and a commitment to providing quality higher education challenge us to do better. The pandemic experience raises longer-term questions about the value of the traditional lecture method—irrespective of the delivery mode. A diverse and experienced group of international educators reflect in this panel discussion on the challenge of teaching large classes both during and beyond the pandemic. Post-pandemic\, what is the future of the lecture? Is there still a place for the lecture? Is the traditional lecture antithetical to promoting active and meaningful learning that develops more creative\, innovative and imaginative learners? Beyond the storm\, how do we avoid the danger of grafting old 19th Century teaching methods onto new 21st Century digital technologies? If the lecture still has a place in the new digital learning classroom\, what should it look like? How might we develop a hybrid model of the lecture that harnesses the best of older pedagogies with new digital technologies to enhance the student experience when teaching large classes? As part of this lively roundtable discussion\, the panel will consider these questions\, and more\, as well as those posed by participants as we defend\, challenge and reimagine the lecture. \nModerator\nMark BrownEDEN Treasurer@mbrownz \n\nMark Brown is Ireland’s first Chair of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University. SUMMARY:No. 2 - Sharing and collaborating our way out of the storm
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDescription\n\nDuring the last year\, with education restrictions due to the global pandemic\, when educational organizations across the globe were forced to move online under demanding timelines and with budget constraints\, many educators have relied on open educational resources OERs to fill a critical need. Open education and OERs have been used for two decades at different education levels\, not always gaining full traction in schools or higher education. In this webinar\, we will identify whether OERs were a solution or being used in the last year in education; and how OERs may be used in the future. In our quest for shaping the future of higher education\, do we consider open education a solution and OERs and practices as part of the education ecosystem?  What problems might OERs help educators resolve and how we can harness the value of OERs for higher education?  Can we consider the future of education is open and\, if yes\, what strategies can we use to make this happen? Three dynamic and insightful speakers with extended experiences and whose voices are valued and command attention in the education community\, will try to inspire us for how to share and collaborate our way through the storm that has encapsulated higher education. \nModerator\nDiana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\,Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \n\nDr. Diana Andone is the Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, responsible for planning and implementing digital education\, and the university award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT.
