SUMMARY:European Online and Distance Learning Week (EODLW)
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDINGS EDEN is proudly hosting the European Online and Distance Learning Week (EODLW) for the sixth time! The event is organised in partnership with the Open Distance Learning Association in Australia (ODLAA) jointly with Flexible Learning Association of New Zealand (FLANZ) who are launching the Asia-Pacific Online Distance Education (APODE) Week and with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA)\, who will be holding its National Distance Learning Week (NDLW). A special webinar contribution by ICDE is also planned. \n\nEDEN thanks all the participants\, moderators\, panelists\, organisers and partner associations who supported us in hosting once again an insightful European Online and Distance Learning Week. We welcomed a total of 700 online attendees at 8 webinars\, with 36 moderators and speakers. This year we renewed our partnership with USDLA\, ODLAA and FLANZ. We had a special contribution from ICDE and Blackboard. \n\n\nStudents’ voice was represented in the session lead by Airina Volungevičienė. \n\n\nWe closed the EODLW series of webinars with a motivating discussion lead by Sandra Kucina\, featuring Georgi Dimitrov\, Josep A. Planell Estany’s speech). \n\n\nWhat is the role of the Digital Education Action Plan in contributing to shaping a new European Education Area? \n\n\nThe DEAP will support building a European digital education area\, which is a priority of the European Commission. The Digital Education Hub will create an interface of cooperation between policy\, research and private sector and aims to increase and deepen the dialogue with member states on the present needs in digital education (from Georgi Dimitrov’s speech). \n\n\n\n\nWe thank Blackboard Europe for participating in the webinar ‘Stepping up to the plate! SUMMARY:Digital skills and training practices in disruptive industries: a European perspective
DESCRIPTION:Description\nNew\, flexible and on-demand skills training is needed to tackle digital disruption and generate employment and productivity\, especially in disruptive industries. According to OECD\, many EU countries have a strong focus on formal education which does not lead to the desired results. Especially adults with low skills are left behind and participation does not always yield good labor market outcomes for them. This EDEN NAP webinar presents an analysis on how companies and company members approach learning\, training and digital technologies in various disruptive sectors in four European countries. This analysis has been carried out within the framework of the Erasmus+ Project StiLLLearning\, a project aimed at 1. identifying the most relevant key competences needed in European disruptive industries; 2. Co-creating an idea back for innovative learning and training solutions for work-based learning 3. Designing and implementing an open hypervideo-based cMOOC (collaborative massive open online course) for competence developers in industries and vocational and adult educators https://www.stilllearning.net/A total of 63 participants were interviewed from Tourism (Italy and Switzerland)\, Textile (Italy and Switzerland)\, Automotive (Germany)\, Building (Switzerland) and Bioeconomy (Finland) sectors. The speakers will present the general results of this international study\, discussing differences and similarities among sectors\, countries and roles (employer\, employee and adult educators). Results suggest that the most mentioned tools for learning at work were for communication\, followed by productivity and video tools\, whereas learning content management systems and innovative applications were less recognised. After the presentation of the general results\, each speaker will discuss some qualitative country-based considerations. Discussion with participants will be focused on practical implications for HR managers\, learning specialists and VET schools in disruptive industries.Type of session: presentations with discussion \n  \nModerators\nFrancesca AmenduniSenior Researcher\, SFUVET\, SwitzerlandFrancesca Amenduni is a member of the Steering Committee of the EDEN Network of Academic and Professionals. SUMMARY:No. 4 - Do we develop digital competences or digital skills? – DigCompEdu to balance your way through the storm
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording \nDescription\nWhen all education organizations moved online in Spring\, 2020\, many of them had no time at all to think about consistent development of digital competences and existing frameworks\, but took rapid actions to find most suitable technological solutions to ensure teaching and learning and filled in the skill – gaps of their educators to apply technologies to transfer information in the smooth and inclusive way.However\, by the pandemic year\, several important instruments describing digital competences of educators already exited\, namely\, competence metaframeworks\, covering knowledge\, skill and attitude/ responsibility level\, as well as digital competence framework for educators – DigCompEdu – and many others. When the storm surpassed\, we have to look around us to reflect on our practices and the way how digital competence development is addressed in education organizations and how this is in line with the competence definition in the broad sense.Moreover\, several important initiatives in the European projects among academics and professionals prepared suggestions on how to address DigCompEdu competence groups and how to match DigCompEdu framework with the competence maturity model. Others raised important questions if digital competence framework is important for educators only\, and how student digital competences are to be considered in this perspective. The webinar dedicated to address these issues will address the challenges and needs that education institutions experience in digital competence development\, will look at the proposal of new meta competences as suggestions for DigCompEdu\, the maturity model proposal\, and will discuss how the pandemic highlighted the need for development of digital competences. \n  \nModerator\nAirina VolungevičienėEDEN Digital Learning Europe\,Vytautas Magnus University \nProf. dr. SUMMARY:No. 3 - Teaching After the Storm: Reimagining the Traditional Lecture
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER ADD TO CALENDAR \nDescription\n\nIn this webinar\, we explore the question is the lecture dead? Will the traditional lecture format be a casualty of efforts to build back better? One of the biggest challenges facing educators when quickly moving to emergency remote online teaching was how to teach large classes effectively. At the beginning of the COVID crisis\, many people merely replaced their traditional face-to-face lecture with a live synchronously delivered session through Zoom\, Teams\, Collaborate\, or other online platforms. It soon became apparent that lecturing down a digital pipe to a large group of students passively watching from their screen-tops was not the most engaging form of online learning. While this approach was understandable during the height of a crisis\, students’ feedback and a commitment to providing quality higher education challenge us to do better. The pandemic experience raises longer-term questions about the value of the traditional lecture method—irrespective of the delivery mode. A diverse and experienced group of international educators reflect in this panel discussion on the challenge of teaching large classes both during and beyond the pandemic. Post-pandemic\, what is the future of the lecture? Is there still a place for the lecture? Is the traditional lecture antithetical to promoting active and meaningful learning that develops more creative\, innovative and imaginative learners? Beyond the storm\, how do we avoid the danger of grafting old 19th Century teaching methods onto new 21st Century digital technologies? If the lecture still has a place in the new digital learning classroom\, what should it look like? How might we develop a hybrid model of the lecture that harnesses the best of older pedagogies with new digital technologies to enhance the student experience when teaching large classes? As part of this lively roundtable discussion\, the panel will consider these questions\, and more\, as well as those posed by participants as we defend\, challenge and reimagine the lecture. \nModerator\nMark BrownEDEN Treasurer@mbrownz \n\nMark Brown is Ireland’s first Chair of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University. SUMMARY:No. 2 - Sharing and collaborating our way out of the storm
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDescription\n\nDuring the last year\, with education restrictions due to the global pandemic\, when educational organizations across the globe were forced to move online under demanding timelines and with budget constraints\, many educators have relied on open educational resources OERs to fill a critical need. Open education and OERs have been used for two decades at different education levels\, not always gaining full traction in schools or higher education. In this webinar\, we will identify whether OERs were a solution or being used in the last year in education; and how OERs may be used in the future. In our quest for shaping the future of higher education\, do we consider open education a solution and OERs and practices as part of the education ecosystem?  What problems might OERs help educators resolve and how we can harness the value of OERs for higher education?  Can we consider the future of education is open and\, if yes\, what strategies can we use to make this happen? Three dynamic and insightful speakers with extended experiences and whose voices are valued and command attention in the education community\, will try to inspire us for how to share and collaborate our way through the storm that has encapsulated higher education. \nModerator\nDiana AndoneEDEN Vice-president\,Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania \n\nDr. Diana Andone is the Director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University of Timisoara\, Romania\, responsible for planning and implementing digital education\, and the university award winning Virtual Campus CVUPT. SUMMARY:No. 1 - Learning Design in the Eye of the Storm
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING VIEW THE PRESENTATIONS \nDescription\n\nIndeed\, today most teachers and educators work in an online learning environment\, yet for many of them their immersion in online teaching was a necessary response to the global pandemic. Overnight we changed physical\, traditional\, learning environment to an online environment. This brought many challenges for teachers. A high number of them needed different and new skills and experiences in teaching as well as the support and collaboration with people of different backgrounds and expertise. Support units\, learning technologists and instructional and learners designers now become more than ever in focus by extensively helping teachers to navigate this new environment and select appropriate tools for planned activities\, to implement new pedagogies\, and to design efficient\, effective and enjoyable learning experience for their students.  Learning designers across the globe led teachers out of the storm.  The pandemic forced steps forward and an online pivot that were planned and foreseen for many years and prompted teachers everywhere into action by opening new opportunities for teaching and learning and highlighting the critical importance of learning design. In addition\, it has moved the focus from content creation to the users learning experience supported by appropriate learning environments. How teachers navigated these pedagogical changes\, what kind of challenges they experienced and what kind of support they required with designing their courses is the topic of this session. \nDuring the session\, we will also discuss the questions: \n\nWhat is learning design in 2021 and post-pandemic?\nHow does learning design differ from instructional design?\nWhat is next for the learning designer?\nWhat is the future of the learning designer’s role?\nWhere does the learner designer fit in the new digital learning ecology?\nWhat barriers do learning designers face?\nHow can reflective learning design improve student experience?\n\nModerator\nDr. Sandra Kučina SoftićEDEN President\, University Computing Centre \n\nSandra Kučina Softić is EDEN president and Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the University of Zagreb University Computer Centre (SRCE). SUMMARY:2021 Madrid
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from a pandemic for the future of education\n\n\n\nThe gradual transition from traditional classroom-based education to online teaching and learning has been accelerated by the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since it started\, our way of life\, work\, and education have been irrevocably changed. When we look back upon this extraordinary period in our history\, we see that this crisis has forced educators to reappraise their roles\, professional practices\, and beliefs. As a consequence\, teachers and students have been forced online\, highlighting a range of skills and knowledge that were sorely in demand. There has been an inevitable need for educational institutions to make key strategic decisions on how to provide both access to relevant tools\, support in their use\, and training for both educators and learners\, so that teaching staff can engage online with their students in a meaningful way. \n\n\n\nEDEN has a long history of supporting educators in online and distance education\, providing a forum for discussion\, learning\, and refinement of best practices in this area. This pandemic has been no exception. Since the first national lockdowns started in European countries back in early 2020\, a series of initiatives have been launched to support EDEN members during this crisis. The interest shown by members for these initiatives has been very high\, with large numbers of participants and a clear desire to share and reach consensus. \n\n\n\nThis year’s conference is\, therefore\, intended as a continuation of the efforts of EDEN to support educators by providing a space to explore the issues and insights that have emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is intended to enable educators to share their experiences and best practices related to a range of topics relevant to this situation. These topics are explicitly listed below but include issues such as: learner-centeredness in education; the continued evolution of online and distance learning; transitioning from emergency remote teaching to online learning; digital preparedness\, digital literacy\, and digital citizenship; the continued adoption of Artificial Intelligence; methodological advances; potentiating health and wellness in online education; and non-traditional assessment solutions. \n\n\n\nNot only does this conference provide attendees with the perfect opportunity to explore this range of topics\, but it also provides us with a space to reflect upon the role that online and distance education will have after the pandemic. As noted in our webinar series #covid19 #onlinetogether Education in a time of a pandemic\, fully online education on a global scale is unprecedented in the history of education. Today we are talking about the “new normal” and “future normal”. What will this future look like? How can EDEN members help to shape it and bring their insights to bear? \n\n\n\nPhD Symposium Madrid 2021 \n\n\n\nThe EDEN 2021 PhD Symposium Madrid will be organized on 21 June 2021\, in the frame of the Annual Conference. \n\n\n\nThe Symposium\, held in previous years in Barcelona (2018)\, Bruges (2019)\, Dublin (2019)\, Timisoara (2020) and Lisbon (2020) has been designed to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge among doctoral students doing research in the area of technology enhanced online\, digital\, open and distance learning\, providing a valuable forum for the advancement of doctoral research. The Symposium is led by a panel of international experts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Proceedings and Short Paper Book\n\n\n\nEuropean Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) Conference Proceedings 2021 Annual Conference\, Madrid Lessons from a Pandemic for the Future of the Education issue is available at the Journal site (ISSN 2707-2819). \n\n\n\n2021 Annual Conference Short Paper Book entitled Lessons from a Pandemic for the Future of the Education (ISBN 978-615-5511-31-8) is available here.

SUMMARY:What do I do as an educator with learning analytics?
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nDescription\nIn this interactive webinar for EDEN\, we will share lived experiences of how four organisations in six countries are using learning analytics on a daily basis. Some of these organisations have implemented learning analytics at an institutional scale\, while others have created more specific and bespoke applications and practices. At least two of these organisations provide rich learning analytics data directly to students\, while all four also provide rich and aggregate data to educators. For example\, at Nottingham Trent University students can easily access their own data about how engaged they are with their studies. At Maastricht University in one course students are given their own data about their learning dispositions and engagement data\, which they use for learning statistics and afterwards use to reflect on their practice. In other institutions like the Open University over 3000 teachers are given weekly data about their students via interactive dashboards\, and whether (or not) the predictive learning analytics system predicts whether a student will pass the next assignment. At Mountain Heights Academy\, an online high school in the US\, teachers are using an Action Dashboard (or data-driven to-do list) to spend more time reaching out to their students rather than clicking through disparate systems to find the data they need to intervene with struggling students. In this webinar we specifically will focus on the role of the educator\, and how you could use learning analytics in your own classroom. Each of the five speakers will provide practical examples of their practice\, and you will be able to work with real-examples of how to consider applying learning analytics. \n  \nType of session: presentations with discussion\nModerator\nIgor BalabanEDEN NAP SC memberAssociate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning\, University of Zagreb\, Croatia \nIgor Balaban is Associate Professor at FOI\, Vice-dean for science\, international cooperation and projects\, and Head of Laboratory for advanced technologies in e-learning. DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nPanel discussion\nDescription:We are facing the biggest disruption of education in history caused by the global health pandemic and it is more important than ever to ensure access to education. As schools closed\, over a billion of students have been hampered from learning in the way they used to\, and inequalities in access to education have become even more evident. If we take the position that education is common good and should be reachable and available to all\, it is our obligation to join efforts and work in this direction. Open Educational Resources (OER) can help in achieving inclusive education aiming to ensure that learners with diverse needs and preferences (such as those with disabilities) have equal opportunities in accessing learning resources\, services\, and learning experience in general. The Open Education movement is evolving\, and besides creating and publishing OERs\, focus is shifting to Open Education Practices that can be implemented using OER. It is evident that the Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a paradigm shift in how learners of all ages\, worldwide\, can access learning. It is\, therefore essential\, more than ever that the global community come together now to foster universal access to information and knowledge through OER. In this session\, we plan to discuss what actions and approaches could be taken by international associations and communities to contribute to this goal.Questions that will be discussed: \n\nWhy is openness in education and research still an issue?\nHow can collaboration and exchange of experience contribute to expanded understanding of benefits of open education?\nHow to foster OERs to support learners and educational professionals in online learning? What experiences and initiatives have there been so far?\nHow can the visibility of best practices be ensured?\nHow can the adoption of OEP in higher education be obtained?\nDoes the application of OER and OEP vary depending on the educational level (pre-school to adult education)?\nHas the demand for MOOCs and short non-degree courses changed during pandemic?\n\nModerator:Ebba OssiannilssonProfessor\, Dr.\, EDEN EC\, EDEN Fellow\, EDEN SIG TEL QESwedenProfessor\, Dr. Ebba Ossiannilsson is a Consultant\, Expert\, Influencer and Quality Assessor in the field of open\, flexible\, online\, and distance learning\, is an advocate and promotes and improves open and online learning in the context of SDG4\, and Futures of education. SUMMARY:Insights from an internationally co-developed MOOC on digital citizenship
DESCRIPTION:WATCH THE RECORDING \nWebinar\nDescription:Within the Erasmus+ NEXUS project\, a MOOC on active digital citizenship has recently been developed\, with the rationale that\, due to recent influx of migrants into Europe\, a majority of European universities have a student population who are excluded from broader civic or political participation. In a way that is different from the typical MOOCs\, that are designed and developed by a single professor\, as a “translation” of face-to-face teaching practices in to a massive online experience\, the NEXUS MOOC was conceived\, designed\, developed and reviewed in a fully collaborative fashion among six organizations from different countries. The webinar will reflect on this experience\, that was both extremely enriching for the participating groups and contributed to the coexistence of different perspectives within the MOOC\, while being less effective from a production point of view. The underlying question of the webinar will be: can a break-even point between international co-production and effectiveness be found within MOOCs? \nModerator:Timothy ReadEDEN Vice-President for Open Professional CollaborationSenior Lecturer in Computer Languages and Systems\, UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia\, Madrid\, SpainTimothy Read is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UNED.
