EDEN 2024 Research Workshop & PhD Schools’ Masterclass in Timisoara

The 13th EDEN Timisoara Research Workshop and PhD Masterclass took place October 16-18, 2024 at Politehnica University of Timisoara in Romania, drawing participants from 14 countries: Romania, Austria, Italy, Spain, the UK, Belgium, Portugal, Ireland, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, the US, Taiwan, and Brazil.

The EDEN PhD Masterclass started with a warm welcome from former EDEN President Josep M. Duart, who thanked participants for their commitment to enhancing their research skills. EDEN DLE experts, including Prof. Antonella Poce (Tor Vergata University of Rome, Italy), Prof. Airina Volungevičienė (Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania), and Prof. Albert Sangra (Open University of Catalonia, Spain), presented the didactical challenges of technology application in digital learning and teaching research. Participants actively engaged in group work and discussions, moderated by EDEN experts Dr. Josep M. Duart, Prof. Denise Whitelock, and Dr. Vlad Mihaescu.

EDEN Timisoara Research workshop Keynote “Technology Education for the Generation AI: From AI Literacy to AI Agency” by Prof. Teemu Roos from the University of Helsinki (Finland) explored the foundational principles of AI and machine learning, delving into the ethical considerations surrounding AI usage and showcasing various educational technologies and their practical applications in the classroom. Prof. Teemu Roos is also the creator of the world’s most successful computer science MOOC “The Elements of AI” available in more than 20 languages. The afternoon Plenary meeting invited to a dynamic panel discussion featuring leading experts, including Prof. Wim Van Petegem (KU Leuven), Prof. Antonella Poce (University of Roma Tor Vergata), Prof. Albert Sangra Morer (Open University of Catalonia), Dr. Diana Andone (Politehnica University of Timisoara), and Assoc. Prof. Silviu Vert (Politehnica University of Timisoara). They discussed the latest trends, innovations, and strategies in research across multiple disciplines.

The event featured parallel sessions of presentations of research papers, where authors presented their findings on digital education and engaged in discussions with the audience. The Best Research Paper Award, in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair in Education and Technology for Social Change, was awarded to authors Daniel Dominguez and Ines Gil-Jaurena (UNED) for the paper “Student Adaptation to Digital Assessment in Online Learning”. The keynote presentation “The Impact of Open Digital Technologies and Blockchain in the Educational Environment in Romania” by  Prof. Carmen Holotescu from “Ioan Slavici” University of Timisoara addressed the impact and evolution of digital technologies in education in Romania, including insights into blockchain development for education and the EBSI projects.
