Digitally enhanced learning at European higher education institutions – state of play and prospects

Description:  The presentation will provide some data from the DIGI-HE survey report carried from March to June 2020 (within the framework of the Erasmus+ EUA-led project, DIGI-HE). The European University Association carried out a survey on digitally enhanced learning and teaching among higher education institutions across Europe. Coinciding with the lockdown and physical distancing, the survey results provide some information on the sector’s crisis response, but mainly focussed on the status ante, and on a plan for the future.The online survey was open to universities and other higher education institutions across Europe. About 80% of the participating 368 respondents in 48 European countries are conventional universities offering mainly on-campus tuition, although the majority offered, already before the crisis blended and also some online learning, usually through short courses. This survey is a timely update to EUA’s 2013 survey on e-learning,  also as it provides some insights on how institutions responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this session, some of the key findings of this survey will be presented, and discussed with a panel of three university representatives.

Sandra Kučina Softić is the Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the Zagreb University Computing Centre (Croatia). She is also the Head of the E-learning Centre and the Head of the Office for E-learning at the University of Zagreb. Her work is focused on monitoring and fostering e-learning in Croatian higher education and providing support and advice to institutions, teachers and students in implementation of new technologies in learning and teaching. She was appointed Croatian representative in ET2020 Working group on Digital Skills and Technologies (2016-2018) and in ET2020 Working group on Digital Education: learning, teaching and Assessment (2018-2020). In 2018 she was appointed member of European Education and Training Expert Panel.
Her field of interest is strategic decision making related to e-learning and distance education, quality assurance, educational technologies and open education and open educational resources. She has been involved in a number of projects (national and international) related to these fields and she also actively presents at international conferences. She is also author of training courses for teachers and speaker on these topics.
She has a master’s degree in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom) and PhD in Information and Communication Technologies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb.
She has been a member of EDEN Executive Committee since 2013 and in 2014 she received the EDEN Fellow Title. In 2019 she became President of EDEN.

Michael Gaebel
European University Association
Michael Gaebel joined the EUA (European University Association) in 2006, where he was first in charge of Global Dialogue and internationalisation, to become in 2009 Head and later on the Director of the Higher Education Policy Unit. This unit focuses on issues related to higher education learning and teaching, including the Bologna Process, lifelong learning, e-learning and MOOCs, internationalisation and global dialogue. He worked for more than a decade in higher education cooperation and development in the Middle East, the former Soviet Union and Asia. From 2002 to 2006, he was the European Co-Director of the ASEAN-EU University Network Programme (AUNP) in Bangkok.
Airina Volungevičienė

Airina Volungevičienė is Director of Innovative Studies Institute at Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania and former EDEN president. Assoc. prof. dr. Airina Volungevičienė has been working among leading researchers, methodology specialists and education policy makers in the area of technology enhanced learning (TEL) development in Europe and Lithuania since 1997. Having established the national network for distance and e-learning in the country, then Lithuanian Distance and e-Learning association (2010), she continued as a leader in research and project work to promote the development of TEL in Lithuania and Europe, introducing many innovations in different education organizations from school, VET, adult learning and higher education sectors. 
Philippe Emplit
Full professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles
Philippe Emplit holds a PhD in Science and is a tenured professor of applied physics at both the Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles and the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). His recent research focuses, on the one side, on nonlinear guided wave photonics and especially on lightwave-based communication devices, and, on the other hand, on questions related to education strategy in higher education institutions. Philippe used to be Vice-rector of ULB for Teaching & Learning affairs and Director of ULB Teaching & Learning Center. He presently starts a position of academic responsible of the Quality Unit at the ULB Ecole polytechnique de Bruxelles. In the frame of the Learning & Teaching Initiative of European University Association, Philippe acted as chair of a thematic working group on “Evidence-based approaches to learning and teaching”.  
Marta Zuvich
Vice-Rector for Students, Studies and Quality Assurance at University of Rijeka, Croatia
Marta Žuvić is a current Vice-Rector for Students, Studies and Quality Assurance at University of Rijeka, Croatia. She received her PhD in the field of Biophysics in 2002 from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, worked as a researcher and academic teacher at Medical Faculty, Faculty of Engineering and Department of Biotechnology at University of Rijeka, and established the University IT Academy and E-learning Centre. She published 41 original scientific papers, participated in 12 scientific research projects and authored 2 university textbooks.
Her professional training included one-year Managerial-Entrepreneurial Skills Development for Researchers Programme, one-year professional study for E-learning managers, Project management training after MSF and Quality Management in Higher Education. Since 2020 she is a member of EUA Learning and Teaching Steering Committee.
