Description

Digital technologies are an integral part of our society today, and the development of information and communication technologies is one of the biggest revolutions in the field of human communication and information management. Information and communication technologies affect all aspects of society, as well as learning, teaching and research, offering the potential for innovation and for better and greater development of the skills needed for the labour market. In today’s education system, we have students who were born in the 21st century and with unlimited access to information, who use digital technologies on a daily basis, and who no longer want to passively listen and memorize information served. They expect to leave the education system with the knowledge and skills that they need to be employable in the labour market, to have the capability to be lifelong learners and to actively participate in and contribute to society. Faced with an overnight change in how education is delivered, students and teachers have had to adapt to a new situation, learning new technologies, ways of teaching and learning, time management, communication, and collaboration. In this session, we will introduce you to the topic of future skills and engage you in a discussion on the skills needed to be active learners and participants in today’s society.
In addition to providing examples of how teachers from a number of international educational contexts have developed online teaching methods to overcome the challenges of the current lockdown conditions, our panelists will also provide insights into the following questions:

  • What is meant by 21st century learning skills and how do these connect to the global issues facing the 21st Century?
  • To what extent are these 21st skills new or different from skills that have been required to live and work in early centuries (for example, in the 20th century)?
  • How can we overcome the challenges of helping students develop 21st Century skills within the context of remote and ‘socially-distant teaching’?
