This webinar explores the rich offerings available to European educators in open access journals. It begins by sharing some “good reads” published over the past year and then discusses key lessons, tensions and takeaways emerging from a rich colour pallet of openly available literature in the field of open, online and digital education. Join a lively discussion with experienced authors and journal editors as we uncover some of the “nuggets” available to educators in the open access literature. The conversation aims to help demystify a number of critical reading strategies to support practitioners, scholarly professionals, and new and emerging researchers to successfully locate, critique and translate contemporary theory and research into practice, and back again. By the end of this webinar participants will be better equipped and more knowledgeable about how to locate, interpret and respond to relevant literature in their own educational contexts.
Mark Brown is Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). He is both a Fellow and Executive Committee member of EDEN and also serves on the Supervisory Board of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU). Additionally, Mark is an Executive Committee member of the Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA) which publishes the Q1 journal Distance Education. He serves on several journal editorial boards and coordinates the NIDL’s annual list of top 10 open access publications selected each year over the past 5-years. In 2017, Mark was recognised by the Commonwealth of Learning as a world leader in the area of Open, Online and Digital Education.
Mairead Nic Giolla Mhichil
Dr. Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichíl is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, with the National Institute of Digital Learning in Dublin City University, researching digital innovation and implementation in higher education. Mairéad is the institutional lead on micro-credentials and has conducted the first national micro-credential survey of employers and employees in Ireland. She serves on a national steering committee to develop and implement a national approach to the development and delivery of micro-credentials with other sectoral stakeholders. She is a Fulbright Scholar with the University of Notre Dame in the USA and lectures in Information Technology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in DCU. Mairéad has spent time working for national and international organisations in financial, computing and consulting positions including extensive involvement in tech start-ups. Mairéad is involved in a number of European research projects as both PI and researcher. Mairéad is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education (ETHE) and on the board of ALT-J and is an active reviewer for a number of journals.
Wim Van Petegem
Dr. Wim Van Petegem is Director of AVNet, a central support unit at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He is an EDEN Senior Fellow, member of the board of the EDEN Fellows Council, and former EDEN Vice-President for Research. At the start of 2021 Wim began as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Open, Distance and eLearning. This is EDEN’s own journal and Wim is committed to ensuring this important European publication maintains open and follows the highest academic quality standards as a basic principle.
Dr. Inés Gil-Jaurena is an EDEN Fellow and member of the Steering Committee of the EDEN Network of Academic and Professionals (EDEN NAP). She is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the National Distance Education University (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia-UNED), Spain. She is Editor-in-chief of Open Praxis, a scientific journal published by the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE). She coordinates the CO-Lab teaching innovation group at UNED.
